the success rate of "punching" in a marking contest has to be better than "marking"....
in previous editions... i always found it easier to mark the ball than to punch the ball away from my opponent

I don't care if the graphics are D-grade, I want to BE ABLE TO HANDBALL MY WAY OUT of my backline..

HAHAHAH nice :D. i would actually play this mode

agree with what someone else said about spoiling having to be more successful than marking. the problem i found in the contests is that the player you were "controlling" went into auto pilot 95% of the time, where you couldn't control where he stood, letalone what he did. this would be another part they'd have to improve on.

Intereting thread.

I haven't played any AFL games for about 10 years, but if the they are better than what they were back then, I'd have another go.

Been a fan of FM the last few years, and I've often wondered whether you could have an AFL version: coaching a club, going through the draft, setting up training, and then the game day experience could be pretty good.

The only thing is: could you imagine worrying about what 44 players on the field are doing, and doing about 100 interchanges during the game? could be a pretty long game, although, I guess you could give that task to your assistant and only intervene when you absolutely had to shut down Judd or Ablett, and your assistant kept on putting mugs on them.

there is an AFL managing game from a few years back...

forgot what the name is but it was definitely mentioned on this forum somewhere

Cheers.

anyone know anything about it?

I dont have it cause i havent had my home computer fixed in about 4 months due to laziness. I use one at work so i rarely need it at home anyway.

But it sounds bloody awesome.

Here's the link. Click on features and game manual, that will tell you all about it.

The full version cost around $40 i think. Demo for free.

definitely play it as a demo first, AND get the patch. there's a few bugs in the game, and while the management side of it seems good (setting training routines etc.), the actual gameplay isn't too realistic - inaccurate kick-to-handball ratio, certain positions prone to getting A LOT more of the ball (westhoff got 27 possies, 23 marks playing on a HFF), not enough tackles, things like that. plus your in-game tactics don't seem to really take effect. they're just my initial thoughts though

Now why does none of that surprise me!!

It's like AFL97 all over!

I don't know if anyone has posted this yet but these claimed to be some early screen shots (or models of the MCG?) of the game. Fake or not?, you be the judge.

While these are clearly fake, it does hopefully make the issue apparent to those on here.

Fans demand the game developers release screenshots to get them excited, but if they were to do so, people would react to have they have with these images.

The public, even those who would consider themselves informed, have no idea what a WIP is. When you are disconnected from a project, you will see images like this and form a mental image of the game in your mind, and judge it accordingly

Leonardo Davinci didn't paint the Mona Lisa starting from the top down like a printer OFFS. Tolkien didn't write his saga by starting with he first work and ending with he last. Things take planning, iterations and time to polish.

Companies will usually only release screenshots of major titles only when the game has progressed deeply and is beginning to resemble what it will eventually look like. It would be very safe money that any early so-called 'screenshots' are merely concept proposals taken from early grabs of a game and then tarted up in Photoshop for publisher approval on something obscure like UI.

Smaller companies generally lack the production and marketing resources to do this.

So hopefully the last few pages has answered a few questions on why there has been a blackout of images released. It could be the most visually stunning game ever and still get panned for having unpolished WIP graphics. And trust me, bad publicity can have a promising project canned before its even released. People are desperate to judge. Its why they want WIP screenshots in the first place.

(p.s. of course the opposite is also true. I have worked on projects where the publisher has chosen to release, apparently on impulse, very early screengrabs for marketing purposes, complete with imperfections, when the game is all but finished and looks polished. Inexplicable.)

Ok, so I am guessing you can't reveal who you work for Fire, but you definitely work for some game company. Are you just not allowed to say?

Facts are, that if there is to be ANY anticipation for this game and any actual sales they have to release stuff. From what we got in the very first and only interview the graphics were said to be "photo-realistic". If they didn't want unrealistic expectations then why the hell would that be the word you use to describe graphics?

BTW, nobody is actually asking JUST for screenshots. WE WANT INFORMATION. ANY INFORMATION!

I think that as you can see by the general reception in this thread alone, the last thing we're really caring about is what the game looks like. We just want to know how it's going to play. Whether that means we get footage, screenshots, I don't think people care a whole lot. We just want some details on if it's all going well and where the project is at.

It's not just that there's been a complete blackout of images. It's that there's been a complete blackout of anything for more than a whole year. It's disgraceful and if bad publicity can come when something is released how much are they getting from releasing absolutely NOTHING about their game for such a long time? We just want something. Any news is good news as far as we're concerned. Hell, look at the jizz fest from a "coming soon" section being updated on their website!

No, theres nothing stopping me I guess. But its a small industry and I see no advantage to compromising my anonymity on this forum.

I don't work for Big Ant.

I won't comment on their marketing, other than to suggest that it MIGHT be an issue to take up with he publisher, rather than the developer.

in response to:
"It's disgraceful and if bad publicity can come when something is released how much are they getting from releasing absolutely NOTHING about their game for such a long time?"

The answer is none. They are getting no negative publicity. I imagine, from what has transpired, that they are going to hype the game closer to its release, rather than try and maintain it during its progress. The announcement has been fairly low key, and its not in the least bit unusual for projects to be kept on the down-low during development. Hell, most projects I have been on havent even been announced until the game is practically finished.

And as for its progression: from what I hear, Its progressing. Big Ant has announced its making a game, so unless they stop, why would they keep releasing the same statement? How smooth or how bumpy the ride has been is irrelevant to the consumer, so why would they comment on them?

As I mentioned, I am not on the inside with this one, and my comments should be viewed as what might be, rather than what has been or is.

Big Ant please read

A few people are talking about what kicking options should be in the game (e.g. quick kick) and what the default control config should be (e.g. handpass is X, etc), but whatever you do with the controls the one thing that is an absolute must is to have completely customisable control settings.

Some people will come to the game wanting the controls to be like previous AFL games, while many others will want them to resemble those used in FIFA, Pro Evo Soccer, NHL, etc. You won't be able to please most people with a single setup and even with 4 preset setups (as seen in previous AFL games) there is the likelihood that a number of players will feel that the game is gimped by poor control options (e.g. sprint as L1 when virtually every other sports game has it as R1...). Clearly fully customisable control options would serve to please virtually everyone in this regard (and surely wouldn't be too hard to include).

Also, when I say fully customisable control options I mean they need to be separately customisable for both attack (in possesion of the ball) and defence. There was nothing more frustrating in AFL 2004 than being in a tight tussle for the ball, mashing away at the tackle button and then having my player take possesion and kick it out on the full (as the kick button was unchangably assigned to the same button as tackle).

______

Another thing that I think would be awesome to have in the game, though I don't know how hard it would be to do, would be full 360 degree directional movement (as in FIFA 2010). While it would be ok to pass to the leading target with the X or O symbol over their heads by pressing that button, it would be even more amazing to have a manual passing option where you could pick your pass in any direction (not just the usual 8 directions with direction assist involved) and try to pin point targets that way. Again I'm not sure if it can be done in a lower budget game like this but it would be incredible if done well and certainly something worth thinking about, if only for the next iteration.

A different direction to the 8 preset ones - you're not asking much! :)
