Indeed - I think it's more of a top-10 farce.
The AFL are nuking our game, to justify their hefty pay packets.
Dillon has now introduced the concept of "maximising" the number of "Games of Consequence", so get ready for the excitement of 12th and 13th desperately fighting for 10th.Part of what made the end of this season so exciting was 10 teams trying to squeeze into the 8....

Part of what made the end of this season so exciting was 10 teams trying to squeeze into the 8. If we had top 10 this year it would have actually had the opposite effect and made more games meaningless. The top 10 would have been locked in much sooner and just the order would be shuffling around.
Also trying to use buzzwords like ‘wildcard round’ instead of finals to seem exciting and trendy is cringy and lame.
Hate this.
May as well go full balls-to-the-wall and change the finals format to top 16 in a bracket format. 1 v 16, 2 v 15 etc. Still get 4 weeks of finals too!
17 v 18 can play each other, winner gets the #1 draft pick.
Now fans of every club have something to cheer for in September!
Call me Dillon, I got more whacky ideas!

Yep exactly. You work hard all season to get in that position to give yourselves a chance at premiership glory for it possibly be taken away from you.Why should 7th have the punishment of playing another game when they may be 3-4 wins better than 10th?
It makes no sense.
It's 100% a final. They should ask him what tanking is too since Gil never quite figured it out.
It's either a Wildcard to get into finals or it's a final. How can it be both?
YawnGeelong fans salivating over still making finals from the 9th or 10th spot they'll finish next year.
With only 3 Vic clubs making the 8 this year I guess its one way of making sure they still get representation.
Now watch those 9th/10th placed Vic sides get Geelong GF 1st half umpiring in their wildcard matches.

The one where we won 1 final and FA else like your mob, yeah, cuts deep.Still hurting over 2024, I see.
In your example, 8th and 10th will play on a Wed night to see who gets the #7 seed.Have they announced the seeding? E.g. if 8th and 10th wins is 8th the 7th seed and 10th 8th seed or does 10 jump up to 7 because they beat them?
It’s a money grab and nothing more. Why is it a farce?
Umpires will now have to determine if a player legitimately fumbled to avoid having a disposalFFS, it isn’t last touch, it is last disposal. There is a massive difference.
Why should 5th have to play 8th in a knock out final in the 1st week when they may be 3-4 wins better than 8th?Why should 7th have the punishment of playing another game when they may be 3-4 wins better than 10th?
It makes no sense.
As a WAFL fan were you against the WAFL having a top 5 for its 9 teams for a lot of its recent history? This is the Eddie Mcguire thinking, why stop at top 10, why not top 16 teams still be alive late in the year.
As for meaningless games well they start about round 14 in every football league and always have, should we just stop the season then so these meaningless games are not required to be played at all?
The I want everything changed crowd confuse it with evolution. Evolution is playing the exact same sport but doing it bigger, better, faster.
The AFL has not evolved at all, all they do is just simply change the sport.
I mean is there a point that it cannot change? What about a round ball? Would that still be ok and not being stuck in the past? No High marks? Just play blockbusters only and you don't even have to play everyone once? We are already at the point of trying is good enough even though you dropped the ball.
You are not against change just because you don't like something, and you don't need to congratulate the AFL for not listening to the populist views. They have been doing whatever they like to the sport for 20 years without one ounce of consulting anyone.
Each to their own of course but I don't see this as anything positive at all for the sport.
First round of finals pits 4th vs 1st. The difference in wins can be just as large as that between 7th-10th. Actually, technically it can be larger if first has a monster year. It’s a money grab and nothing more.
It merely adjusts media attention & content creation to - “can they make it to 10th” instead of 8th.
It allows for more than half the league to make finals each year - even with more losses than wins.
It pits 7th vs 10th, who can have as many as 5-6 wins difference & significantly different %, on an even keel.
It awards mediocrity.
It’s a brilliant example of a farce;

I support it.
