Kind of a weird discussion to be honest. Surely it's the hypothetical money laundering side of things that would hypothetically be of interest to the AFL, rather than which deadshit personalities one happens to follow on Twitter.

Especially when they are following (checks notes) literal white supremacists.

tbh i never thought following someone meant you support them.

i follow some pretty random shit just to keep my timeline interesting.

my facebook still has every no-hoper from the town i grew up in just to add a little spice. posting statuses about their divorce or local drama. good fun.

Deep fried, and thrown into the oven.Very, very well done. Cooked, to a crisp.

A shame really, Frog legs are so much better lightly fried. They taste just like chicken when done right.
Yeah, I'm surprised a select group of footy nuffies are blind to the obvious cultural issues cropping up in highly-targeted, manipulative media and the way it's shaping a generation of young white men.

Not really, when one of the identifiers was engagement with concerning right-wing extremists. Just helping to narrow down potential target of the rumour.

The AFL might also be concerned for the reasons I've stated (if only for the 'optics') - even if a subset of 'the fans' aren't.

While campaigners like Andrew Tate are inspiring a reactionary wave of violent men who cannot differentiate between shifting power dynamics and oppression it is a genuine issue in society. Go ask a teacher what their year 7 boys are like.

My partner is a teacher, she said the only lasting (final) solution to the Male Problem is castration.

You really think the old money millionaires who went to elite eastern suburbs private schools and a college at Melbourne Uni are really really into gender politics, Indigenous advocacy, and LGBTQI+ awareness like their workplace/plaything the AFL is?

The AFL probably agree with the bloke and even if they didn't, you can't sack someone for their political views. Or for following Grant Thomas.
The vast majority of their customers don't agree though. That's the issue (if there is one).

Actually the vast majority of their customers couldn't care less. But to 1 in 100 [or maybe 1 in 1000] these matters are so upsetting they'll carry on as if the sky is falling in. As a society we tend to view anyone being that upset with sincerely held compassion, and will moderate our own behaviour to fit to their demands. And then one day, people will just decide not to do that anymore and whatever the "issue" is will cease being an issue.

In 2020 Hardwick might have been pushed harder for having the "wrong opinions" but he's much less likely to be challenged in any meaningful manner on them today. In fact he seems to be coming around to the idea that maybe he'll get a little more proactive floating some of his opinions. Much has changed.

If I want to learn about football, I'd look to a football coach. If I want to learn about politics, or faith, or other matters, I'd look to people who specialise in those fields. Damien Hardwick is not the person anyone is looking to in order to seek political guidance. But why shouldn't Damien Hardwick be allowed to follow political people too? It's got nothing to do with his job. It's part of living a democracy. Also, there is an insinuation of guilt by association. You can't even follow people on the internet without being assumed to have the worst intentions.

This. Entirely AFL optics.

Nah not really. His psychology stuff back in like 2016-2018 was actually pretty helpful & insightful.

He has completely and utterly lost the plot since then though.
You could say the world lost the plot just after 2018, and some people just don’t realise they did.

It's actually nuanced because it's hard to define progressive v conservative ideas these days and there is an unprecedentedly wide gender split on political ideas. Younger men are definitely becoming more "conservative" though. The women are lagging and entering a peak thinking it's still 2020 but they will also turn in time, and has already in some places. I am around Zoomers constantly despite being Gen X. What we share in common is a view that the politics of Millennials and Boomers is tedious to the extreme. And those are the two groups carrying the torch for the most progressive ideas- with one about to age out and the other to enter an existential crisis over how cringe the rest of society finds their once celebrated views and performative opinions.

It's just the cycle of life. Australia trails basically every western society on all political trends so you may not have the impression that it is happening here, but if you lived in the US or Europe it would be ridiculous to even question the ascendancy of the right. Being driven by the disenfranchised youth. Left wing governments have had power for decades now and violated near every aspect of the social contract to the extent that the next generation will vote for whoever is the opposite of that. It's not even really a question of ideology it's purely self interest. Had Peter Dutton not been absolutely unelectable this might have been an interesting election, Liberals failed to tap into that energy though [glady because I hate them as much as I hate Labor].

Speaking about the election last night with someone 20 years younger than me and at that peak of female progressive ideology we ended up voting near identically. The only difference was she put liberal 7 and Labor 6, I put Liberal 6 and Labor 7. By her own admission if Dutton didn't make her skin crawl and Liberal had the nous to put a younger, more attractive male in his spot they could probably flip a lot of women. The uni party is too smart to do that though.

You know that people of different age profiles can think differently and your circle of reach is not indicative of an entire nation of people?

And there it is. Rule 1: be attractive. Rule 2: don't be unattractive. And we're apparently the shallower sex....

This is a furphy.

The Right love to push this narrative, but it's rubbish.

The world has been moving socially Left for decades and decades, and fiscally Right for decades and decades.

What people called the Left socially 20 years ago, is now considered Right wing these days.

That's why old people find themselves suddenly on the Right as times goes by. They were once hard core Lefties, and they haven't changed - but the needle has moved significantly.

Young people are so, so far Left compared to 20-30 years ago it's not even funny. Even Andrew Tate wouldn't have been considered 'Right' back then! His views on men and women were pretty much Centre back then!

I sat down with my kids to watch Revenge of the Nerds a little while ago, as a trip down memory lane from my childhood.....and I had to turn it off after about 15 minutes! It was shocking!! Haha.

And it was basically a Leftie themed movie back then!

The world is not moving Right. That's just absolute nonsense peddled by vested interests trying to create a narrator brainwash people. It's the opposite.

Fiscally, sure. Hardcore capitalism has engulfed every one and every thing - but Socially it is constantly and fairly rapidly continuing to move Left.
