AFL launches investigation into Chris Scott’s new job with finance firm

Heads were turned and eyebrows raised when it became apparent that Geelong coach Chris Scott had taken up a role with Morris Finance - a key sponsor of the club.

Immediately there was speculation that this was a way to pay two-time premiership coach Scott outside the $7.65 million footy department cap.

Scott was quick to defend his new role after he was quizzed by Channel 7’s Mitch Cleary on Wednesday.

“People like you are more than entitled to ask that question, but it’s one that should be directed at the AFL,” Scott told Cleary on 7News.

“They’ll give you a clear answer. You obviously wouldn’t go into something unless you were crystal clear on how it’s all supposed to work.” Via SEN

All this noise when it’s going to be the same results …stupid is as stupid does

It's just other clubs unhappy they didn't do it and the AFL just responding to pressure.

Wouldn't be at all surprised of they changed the rules on the fly just due to club pressure

Like I said the usual haters will be in a frenzy over this

Absolute PR exercise, Scott has already confirmed the deal has been ticked off.

Can't wait for the 'investigation' into Bailey's Cotton On deal before they give it the green light too.

If this was some dodgy under the table type deal, wouldn't you not advertise it?

The publicity around it, including the media interviews and promotion by Morris Finance would be the complete opposite of keeping something under the table or trying to hide it

It’s going to be comical to watch the AFL try to justify why they are investigating/punishing a deal that was signed off by them before both party accepting the original terms

So incompetent

You've got to ask what the club was thinking announcing it in the first place? Who cares if Scott has a role at a company and what that role is, the public certainly doesnt need to know. If we had our head screwed on straight we'd keep all this rubbish in house, if for no other reason than it just fuels the dumb ass conspiracy theorists that populate the rest of this board and talk back radio.

It's for marketing the financial services company. Hard to market something and keep it secret at the same time

Then market it the same way they always have: with their logo all over the place. You dont need to announce that Scott has been appointed to some made up role to do that.

Ummm... There's never been an official announcement by the club about the position Scott has taken at Morris Finance

It was announced on Morris Finance's website and from there the media - including Mitch Cleary, are the ones ran with the news, publishing tweets etc. They then would have approached the club & Scott for interviews, and if anyone from our side said no, then imagine the public outrage and trying to hide something

Personally don’t like it. May be completely above board but it brings unnecessary scrutiny and innuendo to both Scott and the club. The optics are terrible.

Fail to see also how he has time to take on a job of any significance? An AFL coaching job should be a full time position.

Anyway, know most won’t agree.

Bit off topic my reply , but more to the power of " brand" advertising - because if your a Geel supporter you will then defend the deal to the hilt and if you are an oppo supporter you will attack the deal , so who cares about that

When i 1st read Scott with this role with Morris - a commercial role with Morris - so you see the word Morris in a commercial sense several times

No that ive ever been a smoker , but when i see the word Morris in a commercial sense my brain instantly thinks of cigarettes , that was the power of advertising back in the day

I can't remember that far back, but was there many concerns raised when Luke Beveridge was appointed as adjunct professor following the 2016 premiership win?

Victoria University has today announced the appointment of Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge as an adjunct professor.

Beveridge will work on a number of activities related to the University’s various sport science, coach, and management courses and activities.

The third year coach said he was excited to contribute to the strengthening of ties between the Club and it’s long-time partner.

“The Club and Victoria University have a strong and healthy partnership and I’m honoured to be able to continue to develop that with this appointment, Beveridge told westernbulldogs.com.au following his appointment.

“I look forward to working alongside VU staff and students in the coming months and strengthening the Club’s relationship with Victoria University.”

🤔

So it's been no issue that Scott has worked with Morris Finance, until maybe now - the AFL would have known what's been happening at every step, but now it's an issue because a couple of clubs aren't happy that Scott has got a footy-work-life balance

Already happening.

What we need now is to lure another big name in the coming year or two and that will set the nuffies off into a frenzy.
Well… Only another 300 odd sleeps for that big name to walk into Kardinia Park.

Meh.

**** the rest.

If its above board then CS deserves to do whatever he likes, its his life.
**** the optics. Irrelevant pish in my book.

Scott and Morris finance want to agree to a deal.

GFC approach AFL.

AFL ticks off deal.

Morris announce the deal.

Opposition fan nuffies melt. Clubs complain to the AFL.

AFL saves face by launching investigation.

Media make a story out of it until everyone forgets.

AFL find convenient time months down the road to quietly tell the world nothing was amiss and again tick off the deal.
