AFL Live 2

Can anyone confirm whether or not the career mode in Rugby League Live 2 by Big Ant is any better than this? I'd love to know the answer to that question.

Haven't played it as I'm not a rugby league fan but from all reports it's very good.

So I debated getting this game, after being a huge fan of AFL Live (which i still play regularly, so I have no 'rose coloured glasses' just a comparison). After reading mainly negative and some positive, i caved in and bought it...

Wow...just wow...I cant believe there's some people claiming the game play in this game is better? You're kidding right?

I've played a good handful of games, on medium hard and legendary, and this game is a very simple arcade version of AFL. Mark the ball, Kick the ball, repeat. It plays nothing like a game of footy would, theres no flow, and the flow that there is just gets worse the higher the difficulty. Legendary will make for some close games...but not because the AI play better.

Legendary is an enormous tackle fest, ridiculous in fact. In AFL Live you could get out of congestion with a quick clearance kick, or a well aimed hand ball. In Live 2, a clearance kick will go 5 m, and a chain of 4-5 hand balls is the only option...which on lower difficulties can make for a 'nice' passage of play, but theres no skill to it. On legendary it's just a mess.

Unlike in Live, where you could create quick passages of play on a rebound with a quick kick, mark, quick play on, Live 2 you are forced to mark, go back then kick. Trying to play on will result in your player still taking a step back, pausing, then trying to play on. By then it's to late as the opposition closes in and results in another stoppage fest. Your AI team mates don't move as smart as they did in Live either.

This is not as profound on the lower difficulties, but medium and hard get quite easy a couple of games in.

Put it this way, I've had two very close games on legendary with a 34-28 loss to North Melbourne, and a 45-44 win against Essendon but... the whole game was very boring. Just stoppages, a few nice handball chains here and there but jeez, you just cant generate exciting movement in this game.

The goal kicking in Live was a bit easy, but the goal kicking in this is pretty horrible, theres no indicator of how much power is to much and the flick of the right stick forward is very hard.

Now i know you could say i need to play more to get the hang of it...but this game just doesn't produce the excitement AFL Live 1 did. Ill give multiplayer a go but my hopes aren't high, I can see it being a constant tackle fest as well. For a little arcade AFL game its ok, but it doesnt have the longevity AFL Live did, I can already tell.

Don't get me wrong, I never think anyone should settle for glitches or bugs in a game. I also despise the fact that many games, not just AFLL2 are being brought out unfinished and improved with DLC you have to pay for later.

In regards to it being extremely complicated, I'm just saying that I could imagine it would be an extremely difficult sport to get 100% right. We can see that by the quality of AFL video games brought out in the past (SNES-Current). None of them are anywhere near a great representation of the sport. Saying indie developers do a great job on a little budget is irrelevant. You need A-grade developers across the board and a lot of them to make an AFL game fantastic and I don't think that'll happen. Big Ant was probably the best we would have gotten, but that's done, at least for now.

I wasn't expecting fantastic. As I said I was more than happy to accept that things like the graphics, AI and certain aspects of the gameplay would be incredibly hard to nail. I'm agreeing with a lot of what you say.

I think they created a solid foundation to work with, it just needed another 6 months so they could rethink some gameplay decisions and fix up any obvious flaws and glitches.

As i said in one of my other post Tru Blu should just send the game to EA and make them buy an AFL licence so they can improve and fix the game.

I think a good idea for interchanging a player would be to hold down a combo of buttons like RB and LB for 1 second or something, and whoever you're in control of becomes flagged to get off the ground at the next opportunity.

AFL Live had the D-Pad interchange thing, but there was never any time to look at that.

For sure, dude. I agree! I played the shit out of AFL Live 1, and I am enjoying AFL Live 2, especially one on one with a mate, that's all I know. There are some glaring issues with AFLL2, absolutely. Had it been built off AFLL1 it could have been really good. But for what it is, for a fun arcade style game, I'll take it (I didn't buy it, my brother did). I wouldn't pay $70 for it, though. $25 maybe.

Mmm.... I think I'll just buy GTA V or SR IV.

Thought Saints Row wasn't being released in Australia as it got rejected by the classification board? Or has that changed?

Anyways, so much negativity in here about the game. I've lost my AFL Live 1 disc so I guess I'll just by this for the sake of it. Always wanted to do career again so at least that's in it. Will grab the game tomorrow and give it a run through and post what I think of it.

Volition games made a 'special version' with less drugs for us Aussies.

Does the AI switch the play or chip it around? Or is it all just boom it long down the middle to contests?

The fact that you can run and carry in Live 2 alone makes it a far more enjoyable game than Live 1 IMO. It shite but let's not pretend the first one wasn't either. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

Bought and have been playing the game today. I really enjoy it. Feels much more free flowing then AFL Live 1. Don't get me wrong the first one was great but it was such a tackle fest. Now I can create plays with handballs or kicks. Set shots will take time to get right but its something different which I don't mind.

What difficulty are people playing on? On legendary this game is much more of a tackle fest than afl live 1. Every time you tackle the opposition the ball will either
a)spill free because they out number you
b) ball up when you out number them

Repeat.

There is no ai, even if theres a free player it will just kick long to a contest, in afl live 1 , if u saw a free player u would run to cover them cause u knew the ai would kick it to them

I picked it up 2day it's just an arcade version of AFL! There is some good points I like the marking contest and spoling and the fact it's a lot more free flowing then AFL 1 but that's where it stops. The amanations r terrible how hard is it to get an AFL player in 2 motion capture the kicking and handball etc set shots r awful the game is just kick mark kick handball goal no switch of plays players behind the ball etc and I don't get if ya get tackled ump should let play go not blow whistle straight away for a ball up holding the ball etc and the few games I've played full forward kicks like 8-10 goals every game game just to arcade but if BA do make another game there is a couple of points that they can take from this

Starting to get the hang of controls now, used to afl live....created my player and playing for geelong falcons in TAC cup, I'm liking it for what it is. Only things that annoy me is the whistle before the free kick then they whistle again and kicking so close to the guy on the mark.

Am I the only one who has actually got the hang of the set shot goalkicking? Because most seem to be saying it is completely useless and doesn't work? Already I am pretty consistently able to get set shots from 40+ metres. And I have to agree with everyone that legend is pretty much completely unplayable. However, I have been finding hard to be quite fun in that I don't easily beat the crap out of them like on legend in AFL Live 1, or when playing medium on AFL Live 2, but I still have to really fight to win. Most of the time anyway.

But so far, having now started my first AFL season in Career manager after playing in the TAC cup, I am finding AFL Live 2 quite fun, but like AFL Live 1 in the beginning, quite frustrating at times. The main issue I am experiencing though, is the ridiculous frequency of free kicks for the AI team, regardless of difficulty levels. Most time I will find that just to half time they could be leading the free kick count by as much 12-2, and that's with 2.5 minute quarters.

Didn't really bother with the draft, just kinda screwed with Collingwoods list. Since I didn't get an offer to play with Carlton, I went with Collingwood and am considering just driving them into the ground for the fun of it.

But my general view of the game is that once you start to get the hang of it, it can be quite fun. I definitely have no plans whatsoever to get a refund for it. Unfortunately, I seem to be in the vast minority with my views on it. And I rather like how they have changed breaking tackles. You're guaranteed to succeed, but it drains about a 5th of your stamina.

It has been said multiple times in this thread that there are teams songs, you just have to wait until the commentators have shut up at the end of the match.
Not true. Waited for the commentators to finish and then instead of the Richmond song one of the menu songs comes on

I think that the people that don't like this game should make a game themselves. I know WW and TB are developing companies but seeing all the criticism on this game sickens me. I like the game but I want a patch to come out fast to fix everything that's wrong.

People have a right to complain and question about a product they have bought. From the sounds of it it deserves the criticism. Shouldn't really sicken you at all.

My initial impressions were that this is of a decent quality, however the more I've played this, the more I'm beginning to dislike it. I'll give it a few more days, but at this stage I will be taking it back under EB's 7 day return policy.

I might pick it up again early next year when the DLC is (supposedly) released.
