INFORMATION FOR 2011:
The start of the 2011 season brings a new dawn into Essendon with club legend James Hird starting his coaching career with a young Essendon team looking to forget the horrid 2010 season.

New recruits such as Dyson Heppell, Michael Hibberd and Alex Browne look set for early starts for their career's.

Essendon is looking for redemption in the AFL, after poor seasons over the last 5 years leaving Essendon with a badly damaged reputation and club morale at a low.

The stars of Essendon including captain Jobe Watson, Heath Hocking, Paddy Ryder and Michael Hurley continue to improve and with a fresh coaching panel and ideas, they are looking to improve beyond expectation.

QUESTIONS FOR 2011:

How will James Hird & coaching staff attack 2011?
How will the players perform with a fresh start?

Essendon vs Western Bulldogs Preview

“A New Dawn” is the line from Essendon as they begin the 2011 season with new coach James Hird at Etihad Stadium vs the Bulldogs.

A lot of hype surrounding Essendon and how it will look in 2011, and no doubt everyone will know after this game.

The Bulldogs go in hot favourite, who themselves are looking to start 2011 on a high note as they push to finally make it to the Grand Final, which has escaped them over the past few season’s.

Essendon has named its 22 with a lot of pace shown on the half forward and half back lines with the hope they can use explosive pace and overrun the dogs. And also Ryder named at full forward who will rotate ruck duties with Hille.

Melksham has been named as the sub.

Essendon has named its squad with only 1 debut of 1st round pick Dyson Heppell.

Watson leads the way with a solid 28 possession performance

Essendon has begun its 2011 campaign with a comfortable 47 point win over the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium.

The Bombers led at every change and never looked under any pressure from a slow Bulldogs outfit.

Paddy Ryder and Michael Hurley look set for big years, both booting 5 goals each in the upset win.

Jobe Watson was at his very best, dominating centre clearances with 28 possessions, with Welsh (23) and Stanton (20) also influential.

Boyd was the only stand out for the Bulldogs with 25 possessions and 2 goals. Hill also made his case with 3 goals of his own.

The Bulldogs best chance came in the 4th quarter, after booting the first 3 goals of the final term to cut the margin back to 29 points. But that’s as close as they ever got, with Reimers running into an empty goal to seal the deal for the Bombers.

James Hird implemented his new game plan of pressure football. The obvious sign was numbers around the contest, each time seeing an overwhelming number of Bombers compared to their opponents.

In more bad news for the Bulldogs, Picken and Griffen suffered hamstring injuries late in the final term. Leaving both of them out for at least the next month.

Essendon look at going 2-0

Essendon need to contain Goodes

Essendon are looking to continue its fairytale start for 2011 with a win in Sydney.

Essendon has one of the worst interstate records and is looking for an early win this year.

Sydney didn't have an ideal start for 2011, going down to a young Melbourne outfit by 17 points at the MCG.

Adam Goodes was the highlight for Sydney, picking up 19 possessions in the loss. Essendon must find a way to limit his potential or it could prove costly.

James Hird signalled through the week that he may put Heath Hocking onto him, but made it clear Essendon doesn't want to adjust its game plan to much from the 47 point win last week.

Essendon has named the same team for Sydney with the exception of Jetta being named sub instead of Melksham.

If Essendon are to win they must win the midfield battle and look for a similar good performance from tall forwards Hurley and Ryder in the forward line, backing up from last week's 5 goals each.

Heath Hocking led the way in the 4th quarter struggle

Essendon fought out a 6 point win against a tough Sydney outfit however it may have come at a cost with injuries to Stanton, Dempsey, Zaharakis, Ryder and Reimers.

Both teams fought a 4 quarter battle with neither team leading by more then 2 goals.

Dennis-Lane ripped the Essendon defence apart in the 1st quarter, kicking all of the Swan's 4 goals in the first term, however didn't have an impact for the rest of the game.

The second quarter became a tussle with the 1st goal not coming until half way through the term, a long 50 metre bomb from Hurley sparking a goal for goal fight for the remainder of the term.

Sydney hurt themselves in the forward line in the 3rd, with 2 behinds that should of been goals, Leroy Jetta was subbed on in the 3rd quarter to replace the injured Zaharakis, but that was only the start to the Bombers worries.

The Bombers struggled to maintain the lead, a late miss from Bradshaw stopping the home team from taking the lead at 3 quarter time.

The final quarter began with Monfries kicking an early goal, however sydney replied straight away with Dennis-Lane kicking a goal and a point shortly after which levelled the scores.

The teams then went point for point, including Heath Hocking hitting the post with under 5 minutes to go, levelling scores at 73.

A throw in at the centre of the ground saw Heath Hocking break 2 tackles and send a long bomb into the forward 50 with only 2 minutes left. Hurley picked up the ball on the run and dished it off to Jobe Watson who kicked home the eventual winner from 35m out.

Hocking's 4th quarter earned him a best on ground with 22 possessions, Jobe Watson (20) and David Hille (20) also standing out for the Bombers.

Bolton (22) and Goodes (20) led for the Swan's in the loss.

The win silences the critics and gives the Essendon faithful even more to get excited about, critical games against St Kilda, Carlton and Collingwood are due in the next few weeks, and are shaping up to be explosive contests.

5 changes for Saints clash

Sunday 10th April 2011

Michael Hibberd will debut against the Saints

Essendon has been forced to make 5 changes to its side for the upcoming clash with St Kilda.

Stanton, Dempsey, Ryder, Zaharakis and Reimers all suffered injuries against Sydney and have paved the way for 5 Bombers to play their first game of 2011.

They include, Tom Bellchambers, Alwyn Davey, Tayte Pears, Kyle Hardingham and Michael Hibberd who will play his first AFL game of his career.

Essendon are coming up against a St Kilda team in fine form with 2 wins, in their fight to finally win that flag after 2 years of heartbreak, however Essendon is St Kilda's bogey team, with the Bombers winning the past 3 home and away matches.

It will also be Nick Riewoldt's 200th game.

The question is after a tough interstate game, does Essendon have the depth to cover the injured? and does it have the fitness after a struggle match against Sydney?

The Essendon faithful sure think so, But St Kilda will put them to the test.

Bombers use speed to beat Saints, sit top of the table

Bellchambers was dominating in the ruck

Essendon has put on a clinic, easily defeating a slow St Kilda team at Etihad Stadium.

The Bombers entered the clash with 5 changes and were expected to struggle but dominated in all parts of the game for a comfortable 43 point win.

Tom Bellchambers dominated the ruck contest against Gardiner, and also picked up a goal in his first game for 2011, other inclusions Davey and Hardingham used their speed and were inspirational in using the wings to bring the ball into attack.

Other inclusions Tayte Pears and first gamer Michael Hibberd failed to make an impact on the game.

The Saints failed to apply any real pressure to Essendon during the game, the only time was when Essendon lapsed during a St Kilda 3 goal burst in the 3rd term, but it wasn't enough for St Kilda.

For the Saints, Goddard was lifting with 22 possessions and a goal, also Fisher and Gilbert for outstanding clearance work inside their defensive 50.

For the Bombers it was the usual names, Watson (24 possessions & 2 goals), Welsh (22 possessions & 2 goals) and Hurley (4 Goals) led the way for the Bombers as they improved to a shocking 3-0 and handed the Saints their first loss for 2011.

The games don't get any easier for Essendon next week is the blockbuster at the MCG against an undefeated Carlton. The Saints however have a bye to regroup before a Thursday night clash against the also undefeated Lions at the Gabba.

Great write-up, in particular the pictures, but why do Essendon always beat us? It's really unfortunate! Keep up the great work, and I hope to see Essendon lose one soon, and if they do I know the write-up for it will be just as good.
