Agreed, Brisbane Lions was established in 1996 (or 97 if you want to go by first season. Perhaps the logo should have 1996, and then, if you want you could have 1987 under the BB Logo and 1886 under the FFC logo.

Believe it or nor I have Lions merch with "1883" on it bought from the Lions shop in Brisbane (albeit from the First 18 range).

Let me guess, all new Rangers FC merch can't have 1872 on it, but must use 2012 instead? After all the Rangers that competed last season and this season are legally different clubs.

The Brisbane Lions fly Fitzroy's flag at AFL level so it is only logical that First 18, a brand that makes heritage footy gear, uses Fitzroy's starting date.

Not different clubs, different ownership company. Original 1872 Rangers still exist, and never disappeared.

Good post and I agree that Rangers 1872 is the same club today, even though it is a different legal entity, which was what I was implying.

Some people need to understand that same legal entity doesn't always mean it is the same club and different legal entity doesn't always mean it is a different club.

Anyway this is off topic so I'll leave it there.

On the Establishment year, the Lions need to work out whether they are the "Brisbane Lions" or the Fitzroy Lions based in Brisbane. The 1883 establishment date is misleading.

They're not Fitzroy - Fitzroy still exist in the VAFA or something. They are the Brisbane Lions. They should be able to, however, celebrate Fitzroy's history without claiming it to be their own.
