GOALden Hawk brought up this point but I don't think enough has been made of it: WHY THE HELL WOULD NEED TO INVOLVE THEMSELVES WITH WAYNE CAREY'S SUPPOSED MIFF WITH THE KANGAROOS?

Greg Miller confirmed this afternoon on 3AW that Andrew Demetreou was quickly only the scene to try to secure Wayne's transfer to Sydney to help bolster the Swans in a similar way that Plugger did when he moved from Sk Kilda.

The quesion I pose to you all is, is this proper? Appropriate? Legal? Moral?

Isn't the AFL's role to look after the interests of all clubs?

The fact that I am a passionate Roos fan is beside the point, how would Essendon fans feel if the AFL stepped in to help broker a deal between the Swans and Hird after Hird expressed dissapointment at the possible departure of his mates during the week? How would Dog's fans feel if the AFL steps in now to help lure Grant to the Swans? Think about it!

Someone brought up the possiblity of a Supporters Alliance, I think we desperately need fans to band together to be heard by the AFL.

Amazing but true, Choppy agrees with Collingwood supporter.

Absolute disgrace. Just shows where the AFL's priority is. They put Sydney success ahead of survival of 125 year old Victorian club.

Bree,

When did Greg Miller speak and exactly what did he say?

What questions were asked?

Greg Miller spoke on 3AW today and confirmed that Demetriou involved himself in what turned out to be a non-event,but his intentions were to broker a deal that would see Carey move to Sydney IF the rumours of his discontent were true. Miller said that not at any stage did Carey say he wanted to leave the club, just that he wanted to be reassured about the future directions of the club. Maybe if Carey had actually wanted to go we could have asked Michael Easy to do one last audit and asked for the Swans "real" books which, presumably, are locked in the safe at AFL headquarters.

Michelle, I think Groucho summed it up well. Miller was pretty straightforward and admitted that Carey had some concerns that had been addressed but that Carey had not in all seriousness contemplated leaving the Roos.

Miller expressed dissapointment with Andrew Dimetreau's involvement especially given the implications for the Roos if Carey left the Club (ie fan disenchantment, sponsorship etc). He said the Roos would be out of business in a few years and said this wouldn't be a problem with the AFL cos their priority was to boster Sydney at any expense.

Asked how Sydney became aware of Carey's supposed disenchantment, he replied he wasn't sure if Sydney had involved the AFL or vice versa...

There was a lot more but unfortunately I've forgotten...

Thanks Bree and Groucho - I think!

Oh I hate the AFL - with a passion.

When we won the GOLD Premiership Cup in 1996 against Sydney, Oakley later stated that he had wanted Sydney, a place that doesn't even understand "real footy" and referred to it as aerial ping-pong, to win the Gold Cup. (I am naturally NOT including former South fans.)

What I don't understand, is why are former North players ensconsed in the AFL, being so nice, so objective.

Look at Collo (Carlton) and the former CEO of Essendon (whose name escapes me at the minute). Where do their loyalties lay?

The AFL have 3 former North players and it is the AFL that is trying to get rid of North - BUT they will never succeed.

If the AFL has made ANY attempt to lure a player from one club to another, then a full investigation should be set up and those involved should be sacked. I don't care if it is North, Swans or any club. The AFL should not be trying to poach players for other clubs and those resposible should be punished.

I was born in Sydney and have been involve in AFL all my life.

I have supported Sydney all my life, and I did not come from a Victorian family.

I NEVER refer to AFL as aerial ping-pong, and I was not alive when South Melbourne were around.

I know just as much about footy as anyone on here, and sometimes more than some.

So please dont generalise.

( I am not having a shot at you, just purely making a statement!)

And besides ... I dont want Carey anyway! :p

If this is true, it is a disgrace. It is clear deriliction of duty by people supposed to represent all clubs, not their favoured ones.

If the AFL was more open with their agendas they would cop less flack. The problem with that, though, is that they would be thrown out of office.

In Michael Malthouses column in the Australian today, he comments on a game he went to this season between Hawthorn and Sydney where Wayne Jackson couldnt contain his excitement at Sydney winning........ i thought the commission was there for all clubs? Obviously some are more important than others in the commissions eyes ..... perhaps if Wacko Jacko cant remain neutral ... at least outwardly he should give the job to someone who can

Thankyou Bree for bringing up this topic...I can't believe the media hasn't made more of the AFL meddling in club affairs to push its own agenda.

One has to wonder if the media has been 'worded up' by the goons at AFL house to hush up certain issues. Anyone who saw Mike Sheahan's efforts on the Sunday Footy Show Grand Final edition will know what I am talking about.

Dwayne Russell raised the issue of 7 and the AFL brokering a deal to get Leigh Matthews to Brisbane, as the Lions couldn't afford him. Despite this FACT been reported 4 times in Mike Sheahan's very own paper, Sheahan was quick to say the suggestion was 'a shaky rumour' before changing the subject.

Mick Malthouse's article today talks about Wayne Jackson been unable to contain his glee at the Swans beating Hawthorn this year? Why? Jackson is not from NSW. Jackson did not play or work for the Swans.

Sydney and Brisbane supporters wonder why Victorians get all worked up about favouritism to the Northern clubs, and then you hear about situations like that. It makes me sick. These morons are supposed to be running the AFL in the best interests of all 16 clubs.

As for Demetriou's intervention in the Carey drama - total disgrace, and he should be made to fully explain his actions and justify them. If he can't (and how could he) he should be sacked. Simple.

The AFL accuse Victorian fans of looking at a conspiracy theory behind every decision...well it's not hard when you have things like that occurring.

well gee wizz

Imagine what would happen if the Swans actually got to be the 'superclub' all you Victorians somehow, someway think we are.

The paranoia and downright irrational fear and loathing you Victorians have for my club is amazing and would be totally laughable if it wassn't so goddam PATHETIC.

You are talking about a club that finished 7th and got spanked in its one and only final.

superclub ? - oh yeah right - sure we are

So you think it is acceptable that the AFL is directly meddling in club affairs because they want Sydney to win a flag? Do you think it is acceptable that the supposed impartial commissioners of the competition are openly barracking for a team they have never had an affiliation with in the past?

Come on BSA - how would you feel if the AFL heard Goodes and O'Loughlin were unhappy, rang up and suggested they be traded to Fremantle as Freo winning a flag would be 'good for the game'.

I don't have a loathing for your club at all - I have a loathing for the AFL and the way they will do anything to get a flag to Sydney.

hey guess what ?

In case it hadn't escaped your attention, PEOPLE TALK TO OTHER PEOPLE ON THE TELEPHONE ALL THE TIME !

strange, but true

Thats all it was folks, a phone call - you don't know what was discussed (you are naive fools if you belivee greg millers version is the whole story) You don't know the context in which it was discussed, in short - you know absolutely nothing about what was contained in that conversation.

oh and look ! - NOTHING HAPPENED

Carey is not going to Sydney (if he ever was - for chrissake), The AFL is not assisting Sydney in any way shape or form, whatever was discussed in that call WENT ABSOLUTELY NOWHERE

Like I said - your paranioa would be amusing if it wasn't so pathetic.

The AFL Director of Operations can call anybody he bluddy well likes on the telephone and discuss what he likes on the telephone.

Or do you people want to start monitoring the guys phone calls now ?

sheesh

BSA,

OUR paranoia, our paranoia! :(
Yep, the AFL - DEO can call whomever he likes! Why Ricky Nixon's office when the highest profile player in the land, just happens to be there. Coincidence! Of course!

Maybe Collingwood or say Melbourne could do with a Paul Kelly?
Arrangements can easily be made! ;)

As for your assertions on our paranoia, Ross the dill Oakley and his cohorts, made such a >>>>> mess of the 1996 merger, that it is highly unlikely that any North Board or any North supporter would trust the AFL as far as they could throw them.

Oakley, after stepping down, later admitted that he had wanted Sydney to win the Centenary Gold Cup.

Never try and justify the the AFL to any North supporter!

Well said Michele....just take out North and insert Hawthorn and that sums up how every Hawthorn supporter feels after the pathetic events of 1996 and afterwards.

The utter contempt I have for every single one of the AFL Commissioners involved in those events...you would not believe.

I'm not justifying anybody or anything.

I'm just having a good old laugh at the way you southerners are so quick to accuse the AFL and Sydney of some giant conspiracy to 'bring the cup to Sydney"

LOL - just look at youselves, especially you Kangaroo fans.

Who won the flag in '96 ?,99 ?

it certainly wasn't the AFL 'love child' (LOL) as you like to call us.

Again I repeat - we are a dead set average footy club with an ageing list who managed to scarmble into 7th place last season.

Any suggestion that we are somehow being 'favoured' by the AFl is, quite fankly, incredible.

cheers
