SANFL and other leagues should be happy that their players get a chance at the highest level. They should also be fairly compensated though.

What do you think about this latest idea?

The loan idea is stupid though...

Drugs makes a good point that I’ve always believed.. why do the sanfl actively recruit interstate players once they get delisted from the afl? If they have to work so hard to get them to come, in order to increase the standard of the competition and keep their claim to second best comp in the land I’m assuming, than really this needs to be looked at. SANFL should be prioritising developing afl players and winning at the same time. Maybe the quality slightly goes down but the benefits to state football would be enormous.
Short sighted sanfl!!!
Then when these SA players either retire or get delisted and come home they’re equivalent to the interstate players anyway (if the sanfl did their jobs and developed afl players - increase the SA AFL talent pool).
It’s fundamentally why this state has been so poor at developing elite AFL players, you only need to look at the current predicted SOO side to vomit in your mouth at the situation.

The idea of a mid season draft has merit to deal with injury. But I suspect that there would be very few picked up. Most likely we are talking 17 year olds that usually require 12 months before they can hit the AFL standard, especially when they come out if TAC Cup.

When we talk about bringing in mature age recruits from State League this is where a loan system makes sense, but the State leagues need to be compensated properly, I would be arguing 10's of thousands of dollars. Loan fee with added payments based on games played. Clubs would pay above market rate and a loan fee.

Loans between clubs in the AFL is unlikely in my opinion. Why would Adelaide loan a player to Melb, Carlton or Port?? Loans work in other competitions because they have separated structure such as conferences or relegation and promotion. The one caveat being specialist roles like a forward, ruck or defender. Would Crows loan out Reily O'Brien or Paul Hunter to Sydney for 3 or 6 months to assist their ruck shortage and get some development into one of them, possibly

I asked this question somewhere and had some valid responses. This seems a good spot to ask again

If Sloane or any other high profile player informs the club in April they are leaving does the club then trade in July for picks in November?

Now the valid response is not if you're still in contention

Thoughts?

I like the idea of mid season draft. Can’t see the AFLPA approving it but it has merit.
The game needs to evolve with current trends and this is one of them.
It’ll make losing high profile players a little more palatable imo

These 2 are virtually mutually exclusive. SANFL clubs are there to win a flag. Why would they prioritise developing players for another competition that does them no favours when they're struggling to keep afloat as it is?

Bull they’re mutually exclusive. If a club is developing AFL talent more than other clubs, players are going to want to go there to increase their chances of getting drafted.. increased chance of winning a flag. Clubs also get payed for each afl player they produce, maybe the sanfl should add to this payment as well. It’s also not just about the league side, there’s all the sides below.

Great post.

Good point, it's not like a November draft, we're not going to go to pick 80.

In fact, who is going to get drafted?

If a midfielder on your list goes down, get the next one in line. No club is ever going to run out of midfielders. Especially Collingwood.

I suspect the draft will be focused on rucks, talls, and breakout stars from the state leagues.

Plus, clubs don't have empty spots on their lists usually - will there be a supplementary list so that clubs can make picks mid-year?

I'd do it like this:

Clubs have lists of 45 or whatever.
Mid year draft rolls around.
All clubs get two magical spots on a new supplementary C-list. This list can only be increased by players suffering long-term injuries (i.e., won't play again that year)
Clubs go to the draft and make selections, and the players get 6 month minimum contracts, on AFL minimum (? not sure about the minimum, there might be something to be gained from making them more expensive). The club they're drafted from gets a nice $$$$$$
At the end of the year, clubs must delist players to get back to their 45 list size.

I think that's a start

I don’t mind a mid season trade period, it would allow teams to try and bring in something specific that they are missing either through injuries or form etc, but I don’t agree with a draft that would further compromise every other league.
