Gold Coast could use some more depth down back in the small-medium defender pool, so have chosen with Rookie Pick 18:

Casey Voss

Kid has come on in leaps and bounds this year, and adds some poise and intercept skill to their back half - averaging 23 disposals at 82%, with 7 intercepts a game. Could be a solid ready made pick up.

foodles05 back to you :)

With the next pick Adelaide select project ruckman Oscar Steene. Has come from no where this year to be SA's number 1 ruckman in the state games. His development has been amazing considering he wasn't in the elite system until this year. I know that a number of clubs were not aware of him until the second half of the year and he has forced his way onto a number of draft boards. Really competitive at ground level and move really well for a 201cm kid. Can take a big mark as well so plenty of potential but like any pick at this stage quite speculative.

Sounds remarkably similar to Reilly O'Brien from that write up - also a speculative rookie pick!

#13 Essendon

Jacob van Rooyen

POSITION: Key Forward/Defender. 194 cm, 88 kg

SNAPSHOT: A physically imposing key forward who can also swing to defence, van Rooyen offers ominous aerial presence and contested nous

The 18-year-old is a player who clearly knows what he does best and can make his assets real weapons. He is a terrific contested marker, using shrewd forward craft to own his space and position best as the ball comes in quickly. When defenders engage or give him clear space to leap at the ball, he is nearly impossible to stop and can take over games in an instant.
Much of what has made van Rooyen such a standout among his peers this season is his physical makeup and aggressive intent. He measures up at 194cm and 88kg, and at his best, is not afraid to throw every bit of that frame around. Playing to his strengths inside 50, van Rooyen often makes defenders panic with his size and draws free kicks when obscured in the action of pushing off, protecting the ball drop, and marking for a chance on goal.

This makes him the perfect ultimate replacement for Cale Hooker.

Your go Gee Class Loco
Just out of curiousity I've been looking at club board mock drafts to see what people are doing with our picks.

We absolutely will not take JVR here. We don't need him. We have Jones (20) and Wright (25) already in our side and established themselves as solid forwards at worst as well as Baldwin (19), McBride (21), Eyre (19, although could be a defender) and Bryan (20, will play forward so we can potentially partner with Draper) as young key forwards.

If we pass on Goater to take JVR I will be sorely disappointed.

No worries.
A mate of mine who is a Bombers fan liked him as a KB prospect.

In some respects its par for the course I doubt many mocks are accurate but its interesting to see how other supporters assess needs, sometimes they can be accurate other times not...and the Mocks themselves have a wide tolerance for accuracy. It would be fascinating to assess their accuracy post draft.. Looking at the ess mock...I doubt we end up with Butler, Brown, Conway and Allir...not that I think its dire outcome.

For what its worth... I like Goater too but I dont think its a bad pick for Ess. Hurley is probably done. Bryan will be playing somewhere else within a couple of years, McBride ..well any irish player is a risk for going back home

Butler, Brown, Alleer and Conway would be the exact opposite of a 'dire outcome' IMO, haha

I agree its not a bad group of names. Butler at 26, Brown at 33, Conway at 35, Aller at 37 ...and then just for icing Rankin at 46 ....

Brown is someone I really like but is probably someone we least need. He looks a solid marking afl HB...we get him in the 30's id be happy.

In truth ... no matter the names..one will not know for years. I wonder what our assessment of the Clark draft was in post draft assesment.

Carlton selects Kade dittmar. Best available i rate him as main draft material.

Richmond selects tyler keitel (west perth). Richmond needs a ready to roll kpf and i think keitel is the best bet and deserves his go. I also considered hammelman and jack hayes but i went this way.

Dittmar was in strong consideration for my first rookie pick, but couldn't go past Molan who was still there. Think both go in the main draft anyway
