#13 Essendon

Jacob van Rooyen

POSITION: Key Forward/Defender. 194 cm, 88 kg

SNAPSHOT: A physically imposing key forward who can also swing to defence, van Rooyen offers ominous aerial presence and contested nous

The 18-year-old is a player who clearly knows what he does best and can make his assets real weapons. He is a terrific contested marker, using shrewd forward craft to own his space and position best as the ball comes in quickly. When defenders engage or give him clear space to leap at the ball, he is nearly impossible to stop and can take over games in an instant.
Much of what has made van Rooyen such a standout among his peers this season is his physical makeup and aggressive intent. He measures up at 194cm and 88kg, and at his best, is not afraid to throw every bit of that frame around. Playing to his strengths inside 50, van Rooyen often makes defenders panic with his size and draws free kicks when obscured in the action of pushing off, protecting the ball drop, and marking for a chance on goal.

This makes him the perfect ultimate replacement for Cale Hooker.

Your go Gee Class Loco

Such an interesting choice (think he'll go a little later), and such a good explanation - noice!

With Pick 14.

The Prison Bar Magpie Army from the South of Oz select....

ARLO DRAPER

Torn between 3 players here... Draper, Roberts and Goater.
All fill needs of being able to play both forward and in the midfield.

But in the end you can't go past ARLO DRAPER. Ticks both boxes for the boys from Alberton.

Power, speed and can accumulate through the middle. He is tough and certainly a handful up forward. He is someone who already demonstrates high level forward craft IQ and can take quality 1 on 1 marks as a forward. Really solid mix of attributes and certainly a good choice for Port

At 15, GWS pick Jye Amiss. With Jeremy Finlayson gone, they need a key forward prospect.
Time for Brisbane to select.

Dammit 😡 was hoping youd pick a small forward since brander is coming in.

Bloody hell! I am very keen on JVR.

At Pick 16 Brisbane select Josh Sinn.

POSITION: Defender/Midfielder Height 186cm Weight 82kg

SNAPSHOT: “A line-breaking half-back who has shown promising development in midfield, Sinn’s greatest strengths are his speed and kick penetration.”

Sandringham Dragons leader Josh Sinn came into his top-age season as one of the nation’s most highly touted prospects, pegged for top 10 status having been a standout among the 2019 Under 16 All Australian squad. He captained an undefeated Vic Metro side in said carnival and looked every bit the damaging talent he has proven to be, offering a run and gun style off half-back with the added bonus of midfield work. Sinn used last year as a means to add strength to his 186cm frame and while he endured multiple injuries in 2021, was able to show glimpses of his best form. His final outing came for Vic Metro, which was cut short due to an ankle injury, but the diligent and versatile dasher showed enough as a top-ager to suggest he will safely remain a first round selection.

Pure_Ownage take it away :)

Was thinking this too - we definitely are having one of the more interesting drafts already, and the flow on effects are apparent. Amiss and Ward going past where I thought they would, makes it very interesting when it comes to later picks and the flow on of talent available.

In the real thing though, given Freo's dearth of forward talent, I couldn't see them passing up on Amiss - he's the best key forward in the draft - and exactly what they need (regardless of possible downside).

I guess in the end we will see. How much will it cost to get McDonald from Syd or even Neale from geelong in 12 months. Both OOC 2022... all this comes into the real selections and planning imo.

No doubt every single call in any phantom is not real..as we do not have all the information that the clubs do..we can only go by info we have... data released, others opinions and vision we have seen... which is limited. And to some degree it will be interesting comparing what we come up with..but id say its a moving template... Its a month away and the draft is only a snapshot at that point in time...a week later or earlier and who knows. Even with CalT knowledge he only puts out his phantom within a day or two of it..

Read afl today and both WA clubs interested in Goater , who I considered, his position is probably coming in. Just read edps latest and he has amiss sliding to the back end of the top20.

What this indicates to me is we will see ample examples of the typical response from clubs post 2021 draft. "Blah, blah, very happy we rated him so much better.. we got Ojay Maclacker at 19 and we had him top10 etc... every club walks away smiling.

Now all said with limited knowledge...To me Amiss is very much a convertor. He marks well on a lead, good over head but lacks spring. Denied the lead in a more congest forwardline, as a lot of lower level forward find..how does he go? Less chance to have a shot at goal? Im not sure..so I go another way. Its easy to do in this here...all fun and no consequences.. but it does demonstrate just how hard it is in a real situation to break from the known order..according to draft insiders zeitgeist atpit. (Having said that Freo may go local with both picks, it would make sense to some degree. Erasmus and Johnson for eg.)

nice point of dif to who they have

#17 richmond select josh ward northern knights balanced mid.

I was going to go tall at #17 but someone killed my plan by taking amiss..theres another tall i considered taking but i think he might get to #28.
Ward was my 2nd choice for #9 and him and hobbs were #5 and #6 on my board so gotta hit the value here. Both kida should slot straight in for rich.

Proper write up later out with little man atm.

One suspect Rich would be wheeling out KB and Richo, the yellow and black minstrels , tambourines and streamers , vuvuzela's and jungle drums all to welcome in the two new future Tiger midfield stars.. As if the they have won the tattslotto of the draft

Pick 18
Sydney select Darcy Wilmot
Wanted to take JVR here but just missed him, will look to address that area later in the draft, other clear need is a good ball user with Jacob Dawson leaving the club, Darcy Wilmot is exactly that with plenty of scope to improve.

Darcy Wilmot
Height, Weight: 183cm, 75kg
Profile: A rebounding defender, Wilmot breaks the lines with his line-breaking run and aggressive work by foot. Playing a competitive brand of football, Wilmot was born on the 31st of December and will be the youngest drafted this year - likely as someone clubs will back in as an upside selection with substantial scope to develop.
Two Planks you're up
