AFL overtaking NRL in QLD

Harness racing and cricket did, to be fair….

hampton is complaining about the differences between oval and rectangular stadiums
which amounts to the distance between the sidelines and the boundary.
Sharing a field with animal sports adds just that but with a greater distance
and with no benefit to rectangular sports.

if you had a huge patch of land, which is rare these days there would be only a slight benefit in having back-to-back stadiums sharing some facilities and parking.

You could build the next super stadium at Randwick !

Curious to see what people think - will a Broncos NRL premiership this weekend take away from the Lions success this season? I tend to think the answer is yes because the media in Brisbane tends to have a natural bias towards the Broncos. It's probably better for the growth of the game here if the Storm win on Sunday.

No. The lions win is a great achievement and celebrated as such by their fans. Why would a Broncos nrl win take away from it? There are way way more Broncos fans than Lions fans in Brisbane, so if Broncos celebrations are bigger than why would that be seen as taking away from the Lions win? Let them each do their own thing, both teams are loved in Qld.

I think it's more to do with the media attention. The Lions received a significant boost last year when they were able to claim the premiership in a down year for the Broncos. If they're both premiers at the same time this year, I just feel the Brisbane media will default to the Broncos on most feel good stories and that will somewhat take away from the Lions' achievements this season IMO.

It'd be nice if we could let them be their own thing, but I don't think that's realistic. The media have their favourites and play their role in terms of general sentiment towards either sport.

Is this the first premiership by the Broncos - NO.

Is this the first time the Broncos have been in the media - NO.

Despite the continues success of the Broncos and media elevation by the media
the facts are that the Lions have grown and grown significantly.
The Lions will grow on the success of the Lions with little influence of other sports.

A win by the Broncos will be a win for the Lions because the media will exhort the fact that
Brisbane is now the football capital of Australia holding both the AFL and NRL titles.
This is sure to break down some of anti-AFL sentiment of NRL fans.

But that has always been the case and despite that the Lions have grown and will continue to grow.
The Lions and Broncos have never won the premiership in the same year. We don't know what it looks like if they do.

I'm sure the Lions will grow regardless. I'm talking about maximising growth for the Lions.

This is such a minor detail, but one thing I have noticed is that The Betoota Advocate got behind the Lions this year wayyy more than they did in 2023/2024 and have since sold out "Lioncos" combined t-shirts - I think that was pretty cool

The reality is that RL has a stronghold in Queensland culture.

Will that last forever? I don’t think so.

Women’s AFL has already stronger than RL females competition. That will translate into taking over when these women have children.

A lot of people are migrating from Victoria to Queensland and over time that will eat into RL dominance.

In junior RL Islander kids dominate and smaller kids will rather play AFL, basketball and soccer than be smashed by massive kids. Parents are more likely to encourage their kids playing something potentially less dangerous.

It will take time as the Queensland media is pro RL but it will be two generations and that won’t happen.

Yes I get it. It was a jape.

Yes if anything, the Lions winning in the same year that the Broncos have reached the NRL grand final, or won it, means they piggy back off the success of the Broncos. If you notice, Lions often share Broncos related content on their socials. The media discusses this being a win for Brisbane/Qld etc. Broncos is very strong brand in Qld so the Lions can actually use that to their benefit.

The Broncos are always going to get massive attention in the media, because they're the most supported sports team in Brisbane and probably the biggest NRL club. The Lions leveraging that is a good thing for them.

Brisbane has gained almost 100k instagram followers since last year. By far the fastest growing club in terms of membership, sponsors and now even on socials. At this rate, we will overtake Hawthorn by this time next year, and Collingwood (who only gained 36k this year) in about a couple of years.

Yep. Socials and digital platforms are elastic to on field performance.

Only caution with Brisbane is when comparing their reach to a club like Collingwood... Like the Melbourne Storm, you tend to get a good amount of ‘Brisbane’ fans jumping on socials even if they aren’t really AFL rusted on fans. They have an interest in how their AFL representative is going and thus join their socials. A bit like the Roy Morgan polls. It’s not really representative of true rusted on support but certainly a gauge of casual interest and who they identify with in the AFL. And that’s a positive because 20 years ago the Lions didn’t have anyone interested in them, let alone properly following them.

A big factor that's probably going to speed up the process of AFL growth in Queensland is the fact that both QLD clubs are now capable of landing big name players from all around the league. Petracca choosing the Suns cannot be underestimated in terms of the message it sends to the rest of the league. Other players, who previously wouldn't have given Gold Coast the time of day, will now look at the Suns as a genuine destination because Trac did and that will help to keep the ball rolling, like we've seen with Brisbane continuing to land good players year after year since the original big acquisition of Lachie Neale then leading into players like Daniher, Dunkley, Allen, Draper etc.

South East Queensland is arguably one of the best places to live in the world if you're a young man looking to pursue a professional sports career and I think footballers around Australia are now collectively realising that. The only question mark that remained was whether players would get to play finals if they made the move to the Gold Coast, but that question was answered this year. It's boom time for Aussie rules in Queensland and I suspect it's going to get a lot bigger over the next 5-10 years.

It was the same for a number of fledgling AFL clubs. Swans, Brisbane, Dockers, Giants and Suns.
It will the same for Tasmania and every team afterwards.

Yeah, it's a game changer when a club changes the perceptions of the footy world and actually lands a superstar. I know we had Ablett at the start, but that decision was mostly influenced by money that he was never going to get from Geelong. Petracca already had a big contract and has chosen the Gold Coast for lifestyle reasons and a chance to win another flag.

To be honest, I think we're capable of becoming the AFL's version of the Miami Heat over next few years - A small market team that is a well run organisation based in a desirable tropical location that really good players want to play for. Acquiring Petracca and our first ever finals win in 2025 has certainly put us on the pathway to acheiving that.

It'll be interesting to see how the Gold Coast public reacts to this next year. I suspect we're going to see a lot more media attention and bigger crowds.

Well, now we find out if that's true. I'm seeing a whole lot of Broncos media attention (as you would expect) and virtually nothing about the Lions. Let's see what happens over the coming weeks/months, but the thing I fear is this may have ignited the Broncos fans in a way that could hurt Aussie rules in Brisbane. Those juniors who were on the fence about choosing Aussie rules or rugby league may well go towards rugby league now after seeing what a Broncos premiership has done for the city.

Media cycles are very short. They will easily divert their attention to the next headline grabber that comes along.

There was actually more net migration from Queenslanders into Victoria this year as Queensland property prices have become so expensive that Queenslanders are heading South in search of affordability.

You're probably right. One aspect of last night's Broncos' win that I found interesting was the Queensland Premier commenting on upgrading Suncorp Stadium's capacity after being called out on the mic by the Broncos captain. The Premier was asked about it and suggested they are currently looking at plans to upgrade Suncorp to over 60k capacity. That would mean both the Broncos and Lions will be playing in 60k+ stadiums in the near future.

Sure. I'm talking about the majority, though.

Dont think the Suncorp plan is actually funded at this point though.
