They are playing matches there.

Yes, local and school girls and women's matches will be. The club has not committed to playing AFLW games there as we have the option on playing at Henson Park which was redeveloped for our AFLW team. We may decide to play low drawing games there at some point considering the capacity will be 4000.

In any case the ground will be built at a size that is suitable for women's football and will be too small for VFL or AFL matches to be played on.

That oval (the old Showgrounds) is a similar size and shape to the new Showgrounds (Giants). Not as wide as SCG but a little longer. Bigger than Norwood I’d reckon. Perfect size (going to be 4,500) and location for a GC v Freo game to finish 20 mins before an SCG game.

In Sydney you'd do the event during the Nrl magic round weekend in Brisbane. Otherwise it's pointless, with Vlandy's and the Sydney media doing everything in their power to block it from being a success. Therefore the AFL would need to hold off on the fixture until later in the year, to ensure they get clear air in NSW and no last minute fixture changes from Mr Vlandy's.

There are actually 6 options to play at in Sydney:

Inner Sydney: SCG, Henson Park (which is perfect for this event) and the new ground next to the SCG.
Western Sydney: Giants stadium, Accor Stadium, Blacktown.

The Sydney city options would be great and very successful, however the whole point of doing it in Sydney is to have some presence in WS as well.

Therefore I'd have:
Friday (Inner Sydney stadiums x2)
Super Saturday (Western Sydney stadiums x4)
Sunday (Inner Sydney stadiums x3)

I dunno how you'd break it up to be honest. Would you hold back the swans game for Saturday? So that you could have the Swans and Giants both at Sydney Olympic park on the same day, to ensure that day is a success?

The club seems to think otherwise which was in response to your question on the Swans Board about the ground size and the possibility of playing VFL and practice matches there:

Having a chat to one of the ladies at HQ in round 2, still a while off 2 years likely. The field will not be able to host VFL as the dimensions are too small but may hold AFLW games if capacity is likely to be low. We will also have the option of using the redeveloped Henson Park.

So after redevelopment Showring Oval is anticipated to have a capacity of over 4,000.

What’s the anticipated capacity for Henson Park after redevelopment?

It is ‘more pointless’ to do it outside of Vic school holidays.
You can use ACCOR over Easter holidays, just not Showgrounds.
Play Swans v Pies @ Accor, and a game in Blacktown. That covers the outer west. Most people will be staying in inner suburbs, so that is where the majority of games need to be.
If it is the week after Easter and you want to use ACCOR, and assuming you can’t use Showring, ACCOR won’t work on a weeknight so I find it really hard to create a fixture where you will get decent crowds.
Thurs Pies v Tigers SCG
Fri 5pm Lions v Crows Henson Pk
Fri 8pm Dees v Bombers SCG
Sat 12pm WB v WC Blacktown
Sat 3.30 GC v Port Hensen
Sat 7.10p Swans v Blues ACCOR
Sun 1pm GWS v Cats SCG
3.20pm Saints v Tas Henson Pk
4.30pm Hawks v North SCG

Sydney does have five times more htoel rooms that Adelaide so you would need 100k+ travelling to avoid sparse crowds.

Again we have people throwing suggestions out without much thought.
Henson Park, even with development isn't going to be an AFL stadium w.r.t. seating and facilities.
It's in the Eastern Suburbs and i don't know how tourists would get there.
Blacktown ,again, isn't going to be an AFL stadium w.r.t. seating and facilities.
People don't like driving that far or walking from the train station.
If you are talking about Blacktown or Henson park you may as well talk about any other patch of grass
that can be built up into a Mt Barker.

What do people want the money or the box ?
Adelaide has shown that they can draw tourists and use local grounds.
Sydney must say to itself that it can attract the same band of fans.
Having people find their way to Blacktown isn't really going to substantially promote the game to locals.

If promotion of the event does attract locals then they are going to be more impresses with Homebush and the SCG.
people would surely take note if North Sydney Oval was used for a (redeveloped) venue.
Physically it has the stands and and the capacity.
All it needs is a re-alignment and the nod from who ever gives the nod there.
North Sydney Oval would be a lasting legacy with even AFL games being played there
whilst other venues would return to grass once the temporary seating was removed.

The question has to be does the AFL want venues to be close together for the tourists
or spread out for promotion. I think Adelaide has given a lot of pointers in that direction.

If you are prepared for a greenfields project then there are more convenient locations
like Trumper Park Heffron park or the home of the Marounbra Saints.

North Sydney Oval is the most ******* delusional suggestion of the lot.

It would take a great deal more than a mere realignment for it to be suitable for a men's AFL game for premiership points (even for 16-a-side AFLW it was a joke), and it'll never happen.

OK, for the dummies, re-alignment with additional land taken from the park.
If you look at a map of North Sydney "Oval" is is on a truncated square.
If you align and extend the ground in the direction of the memorial it fits nicely
and the stands fit even better.

for it to be suitable for a men's AFL game for premiership points

Who's talking AFL game's for points ?

(even for 16-a-side AFLW it was a joke),

Beg to differ - for the AFLW it was a great result.

and it'll never happen.

Well that is the hardest part - physically easy and cheap, but to get the nod of approval, well that's politics.
we cannot have another great AFL ground in the heart of Sydney.

I've shown you the maps, which clearly demonstrate why the suggestion of North Sydney Oval is dumb.

And context for where each of these fields are. You can see the four to Sydney’s east (near the cbd), Blacktown to Sydney’s west, and Homebush and Showgrounds which are to Sydney’s geographical centre.

What's the deal with that big tree in the corner? I gather it's got some perceived value cos it surely would get in the way for both cricket and footy.
NSO hosts cricket and RL as well as the odd AFLW game. That tree ain’t going nowhere. Nor the historic stands. It is never going to be redeveloped with AFL in mind.

Here are some comparisons of the big 5 cities, with their ovals with a similar map scale. The choice of fields are not necessarily a similar standard. With some in Brisbane and Sydney need major works to bring them up to scratch, but it could be considered as legacy building if they were to host Gather around games.

I’ve used public transport maps, to help show how easily visitors can get to the relevant fields.

The first comparison includes neighbouring cities such as:

Brisbane + Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast
Melbourne + Ballarat and Geelong
Perth + Bunbury and Mandurah
Sydney + Newcastle and Wollongong

It gives people a better context of distances and locations for cities they may not be as familiar with.

3d9000bc23349e21c445edb5131f060c.jpg

The second comparison focuses in on the main city only. You can see how much more compact Adelaide is. Springfield may be a bit too far out for Brisbane. Likewise Joondalup may be too far from Perth. Also Perth Stadium is so close to the WACA Ground, they are one dot.
