AFL Rd 4 - Collingwood vs Port - Changes and Prematch Discussion

Seaby, Hampson/Warnock, Griffin are the 4 we should be looking at if and only IF we draft another ruckmen. Personally, I don't think we should unless our list shows its still good enough to make the top 4. If not we should invest in some pacey mids and flankers to replace Johnson, Didak, Maxwell and Krak. We seriously lack pace on the spread from our midfield. Carlton and Essendon last year exposed us with their pace. Also, another specialist forward pocket wouldn't go astray... With Krak and Didak injured, Fasolo is our only creative forward. He is more of a leading HFF though than a forward pocket. In a couple of years we should also shoot for a replacement for Cloke (Given it will take a while to find one and develop).. I'd suggest trying to poach one of Day, Dixon or Lynch from GC.. I think Lynch showed the most last year..

I'm not sure what you mean by "only if we draft another ruckman". We don't need to draft any more ruckman, Witts and Ceglar are sufficient and have shown alot to say they will be the future. I'd definitely look at the 4 you mentioned though as 3-4 year replacements for Jolly and Wood.

We drafted Elliot last year and he should be a very solid stay at home small forward. We could do with another indigenous forward though, I just can't see Ugle making it and we miss the spark that Krakouer and Davis offered. They were game changers - like Cyril. I do agree with the speedy midfielders, it also wouldn't go astray getting another in and under midfielder.

Stewart and Paine will provide us with KPF depth when they are old enough to either surpass Dawes or when Cloke starts dropping away with injuries.

I'd probably put priority in:

1: Classy, speedy mid
2: Inside mid
3: Small forward
4: HBFer with speed and skills (however Yagmorr should have this covered).
5: KPF
6: Ruck

If you don't mind my input

I would say warnock from Carlton is a definite option. Hes Definitely a quality ruckman. Gws looks like his most likely destination. You guys wont be able to offer him the cash, but you can offer him first class facilities and a chance at a premiership

Il stop now because this is getting ridiculously off topic

What i mean is that if Buckley feels we still have another shot at a premiership and Jolly and Wood aren't cutting it then i have no problem in trading a top pick for one of these 4. I know we are right in the future with Ceglar and Witts but Wood and Shae Mac are not good enough to take us to a premiership. Jolly IMO is experiencing a changing of the guard with ruckmen. He needs to be able to jump to compete with guys like Ryder, NicNat, Kreuzer, Mumford. Jolly's strength is anchoring his feet and outmuscling his opponent.. Thats why he conceeds so many free kicks against..It will get worse next year too as I think the AFL will most likely introduce the no contact stoppage rule trialled in the nab cup.

I'm not saying the 4 listed will be able to compete better than Jolly, but they will definately compete better than Wood and Shae and that may be the difference in 2013.

I don't think Paine will ever be an effective CHF.. Just doesn't have the height. He could very well be a lead up FF, and has the attributes to be good. But I don't think its too far to suggest he will never reach the heights of Cloke, Pavlich, Goodes, Tippet, Riewoldt etc... Thats what we should be striving for.. Being "serviceable" is second rate.

Don't know much about Stewart tbh so i can't comment on that..

Apparently with this years so called super draft the top 30 mids this year are all very good.. Given that we should probably get 2 decent picks (given that others will draft KP's and ruckmen) within this range.. I think your on the money with how we should start our draft.

Anyway back on topic, I am expecting a very close game this weekend. Maybe even an upset... Port are playing a good brand of football at the moment. I hope we can finally rock up to play.. Show some commitment to the contest.. I would be happy if we showed a decent defensive effort. Chasing, tackling and all the one percenter's to go with them. If we can do that, then I believe everything else will fall into place.

The Power poster made a good point about getting off topic so this is the last I'll put in on this. Jolly may well be gone at years end if his knee troubles get any worse and Shae Mac is in his last year. We won't go into 2013 with just Witts, Ceglar and Wood as ruck options so one will be brought in over the next two seasons and with the raw nature of both Witts and Ceglar an experienced one through either a rookie pick or late in the draft is the way to go.

IN: Paine, Johnson, Rounds, Buckley
OUT: Reid (inj), Ball (inj), Sinclair (omit), Jolly (rest)

Jolly rests this week given the upcoming 4 day break. Wood gets a chance to run around with a 4th gamer in Redden. He always seems to play better when given an opportunity to ruck on his own. He does not have many chances left, however.

Sinclair not good enough. Rounds can play his role. Potentially Ugle.

Paine to come back to play some forward time and Dawes may have to help out in the ruck again.

Johnno to come back and give us a bit more run across half back and wing.
God forbid I’d ever advocate the return of Simon Buckley but our defender stocks are currently very thin (N Brown to come back vs Ess), so he might be required down there so that Maxwell, Goldy & Tooves play pure lock down roles.

Dids gets another week.

Did anyone make it to training yesterday?

Apparently Shaw and Daisy either weren't there or didn't complete the session (depending on what rumour you listen to), so there's a chance they may not play on Saturday, and that they may be the two that are effectively rested this weekend for ANZAC day.

No confirmation, but it will be interesting to see who is selected at 6.30pm tonight (I do not watch Channel Seven news:thumbsdown:).

Fully endorse the inclusion of Paine.

In: Paine, Johnson, Ugle, Young
Out: Reid, Jolly, Tarrant, Sinclair

Young and Buckley haven't been great but I'd back Young to make more of his career from here than Buckley.

If Shaw and Dale are out on top of Ball and Reid we'll be lucky to beat Port tbh. They weren't too bad against Essendon when they played at Etihad a couple of weeks back. I'm quite worried we are gonna lose :-(

At the risk of being bombarded with hate posts, last year I would only have had to wait another 70 minutes to learn the teams.

They're gone for the next 2 matches.
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

In: Buckley, Yagmoor, Ugle, Young, Johnson, Paine
Out: Shaw, Thomas, Reid, Tarrant, Sinclair, Jolly

Turns out that it's true.

I wonder if Port are still paying $8 for the win.

This like a bad dream. We cannot take a trick. This has shades of 2005 about it. Oh well... at least we got Daisy & Pendles that year....

It is turning to be a bit like 2005 but I still see us finishing about 6-8 Spot

Time for an inquiry into training methods. No other team has anywhere near as many injuries as us.

I'd be excited by the silver lining in injuries for the opportunity of the talented young kids that will get a crack...but sadly, I am not excited by much of what I see...

Young - yep okay deserves a game.
Seedsman - shows glimpses and has potential but needs hardness
Paine-train - That one shining light is that he hopefully gets a call up...but reckon they'll be doing everything they can to give him another week getting decent numbers in the VFL.
Sinclair - AKA "list clogger 2012" will remain and continue to stink it up.
