It’s an absolutely critical game this Saturday, with two finals contenders in Collingwood and the Swans going head to head at the SCG. Both these teams have had injured seasons, which have really hampered the campaigns of both teams. Both teams are coming off a crucial losses. For Collingwood, it was a last quarter fade out to Richmond after playing a brilliant first three quarters. For Sydney, they have dropped a few crucial games in the past few weeks. Both sides will be eyeing a win this week to steady their ship in their 2018 campaign.
Collingwood
The Magpies can’t seem to catch a break this season, with injuries to more key players occurring each week. Last week, key backmen in Jeremy Howe and Matt Scharenberg has decimated the Collingwood backline. To go along with this, star forward Jamie Elliott has suffered what will most likely be a season ending injury. It’s quite unfortunate for Collingwood, as many will wonder what could have been if the injuries could have been minimized. Nevertheless, Collingwood are still in contention for a top eight spot, and a win against Sydney can really secure their spot in the finals.
Similar to the match earlier in the season, Collingwood were able to hang with Richmond for three quarters, but injuries caused them to really fall away in the last quarter. Brodie Grundy and Josh Thomas were outstanding for the Magpies, with Darcy Moore controlling the backline. However, injuries to Howe and Scharenberg proved costly to the Magpies.
The man to watch for Collingwood is Jack Madgen. Standing at 6’4, Madgen spent three years at Delta State University in the United States. Madgen gets his chance with Howe out with concussion. He will get have his work cut out for him with a very potent Swans forward line. Madgen will have to deal with likes of Ronke and Franklin in a very dangerous forward line.
Sydney
Like Collingwood, injuries to the Swans have really derailed their season. For Sydney, their season is on the ropes, and they will need a win against the Magpies to keep their season alive. The Swans are coming off two disappointing performances, a huge upset against the Suns and a mighty disappointing performance. Simply put, the Swans lack imagination when going forward. They are predictable in the forward line, and when they are on the defensive, their tackle count is much lower than what many have expected from the Swans in the past few years. Last week against the Bombers, Sydney just couldn’t get any fluid movement going. Lance Franklin copped the brunt of the criticism, with many stating that the star forward is starting to significantly slowing down. Longmire came out during the week stating that Franklin has been carrying an injury all season, but has made the bold move not to rest Franklin.
The man to watch for the Swans is Alex Johnson. 2136 days. That’s how many days it has been since Alex Johnson has played top level football. The star backman has suffered numerous long term injuries, but his resilience should be commended, as many would have quit long before him, if they suffered the same setbacks. While Johnson may not live up to the lofty standards he set in 2012, it is one of the feel-good stories of the season. Many will be hoping he can make an impact on the game.

Sydney: $1.72

The run home…
So, it’s the pointy end of the season, and it’s necessary to see what a loss or win means for Collingwood. The ladder predictor will assume that all the other favorites win.
If Collingwood wins
They will remain where they are.
If Collingwood loses
They could drop significantly. If a particular set of results occur, Collingwood could be outside the eight by the end of the round.
Tip
Both sides are troubled with injuries, but the Swans have a much more complete team. With Collingwood lacking some key backmen, Franklin should have a field day and lead the Swans to a critical victory.
Swans by 25.
