Review AFL Round 3 autopsy - Collingwood defeated by Geelong by 11 points

Nah, I stopped looking on twitter because one tweet led to a mountain of Collingwood bitching about the umpires
we actually got 1 more free than they did :)
Not sure what I thought- looks like they've put the whistle away on holding the ball frees, incorrect disposal (both dropping the ball or throwing it out of a pack), holding the man and most in the backs. Didn't get too many head high frees paid, either. Going both ways, I'm sure.Strange but I thought if they don't want the players to bump, they need to reward tackling like they used to.

I'm betting it contained about 10 paragraphs and was a steaming pile of crap too.
Well not as bad as these:
Collingwood lost due to skill errors, players out, & treatment of Cloke. Pies are a better team.
Yes I think Collingwood will still finish above Geelong on the ladder in 2014. Wish we had same easy start.
Geelong defeated Adelaide at home, Brisbane, & injury depleted Collingwood. Unconvincing. Pies are better.
Travis Cloke was absolutely mauled. That was the difference in the match.

Just got back from the game.

Weird, kinda like who could outdo each other in being bad. While the tackling was ferocious and the atmosphere great, the skill level from both sides was as bad a Geelong vs Collingwood match I have seen in 4 or 5 years.

In particular I thought our ball use inside 50 was terrible, and we butchered chances on goal which kept them in it all the way. Our crumbing also irked me, a number of times seeing Hawkins and Big Mac hit the marking contest, and then rove themselves because we had no crumbers in the right spot, was frustrating. Need improve on our work inside 50.

It was funny, because in the first half our rucks were terrible and I almost wanted to be able to sub them both at half time. But in the last 1.5 quarters they came into their own, and their work (particularly Hamish) had a big say in us winning the game. In the end they were very good and Blicavs was also useful when he came on. We clearly will use both rucks against WC next week as they are so strong there, and Blitz as a running tall will be useful when they have athletic talls like Kennedy and Darling and Natanui. So Brown may be the one to make way if they feel we are top heavy, but I felt he wasn't as bad tonight as being subbed might suggest.

Hawkins was massive and it is good to see him start to lead at the ball carrier instead of try and wrestle all the time.

Selwood is a gun and most of the senior players while patchy throughout the game, stood up at the crucial time at the end.
Guthrie was awesome on Pendlebury and he could be all australian as a midfielder.
Wish we had another one of him as a defender though because it was frustrating watch a small forward open us up yet again. Enright is a gun stopper but is in the last couple of years of his career, and for me Guthrie is the only young player we have coming through who can consistently shut down good small forwards, and the team needs that hole filled. I know they are trying to develop Hunt for that and he was missing tonight, so we shall see, but it worries me that the best thing for the team may be for him to have to be put back there at times.

It baffles me why so many people don't want Rivers in the team, he is a very good player.

I understand the issues around team balance but HS really will thrive if he is given at extended run, hope he is.

All in all it is good to be winning but we need to find improvement quickly or we will drop games, cant play sloppy footy and be patchy.

All in all it is great to "bank" these wins early in the season, no matter how we earn them. I thought our mid field held up well against one of the best - congrats to Guthrie and GHS along with the usual mid field crew.

The one concern that stod out for me is the lack of mobility in the forward line. Too often i thought that the Pies defence were able to run the ball out of our forward line with what appeared (on the TV at least) minimal pressure. Therefore Varcoe and Murdoch are currently critical cogs in the team's structure.

I agree with that.

I think it's partly personnel-Motlop makes a huge difference to that, but also partly structure, with a fit again Hawkins, and a resting ruck forward, we are kicking it longer and quicker than last year, but the forward line with the change of personnel, hasn't yet worked out the chemistry as to knowing where those kicks will go and then hitting the fall of the ball hard to take attacking crumbs.

And, of course, if we play 2 rucks plus a pseudo-ruck, that's two less crumbers hanging around down there.

Can I just say I think GHS will be a star of the competition. I've been a long term admirer. He's very much in the Kennedy/Watson mould of big inside mid who pretty much take as long as a key position player to find their feet because they rely so much on the physical side of the game. The guy can win contested ball, has elite vision and good skills. Never mind the lack of pace, that's enough to be deadset gun.

It's quiet realistic for us to have the single most mobile forwardline in the league when we get players fit. Something like:

HF: Motlop Blicavs Varcoe
FF: Smedts Hawkins Murdoch

With Bartel, Christenson rotating through, fingers crossed on Menzel maybe seeing some game time too. I think no team in the league could match that in terms of mobility. For now though, Brown doesn't seem a hard worker, Hawkins is still building fitness and we're carrying 2.5 ruckmen so for me it's understandable if we're lacking pressure at times.

It's not so much the two rucks, it's the lack of pacy Motlop's and Bundy's to counter that.

The two rucks give us things we didn't have when we had no rucks, and once we have those quicker guys back I think it will be a good mix.

In the meantime, I think the forward half has a whole has had a lot of turnover of players (Chapman, Podsiadly, Vardy injured etc, no Motlop) and it will take time to build chemistry with the group we have at the moment.

i think the likes of brown or kersten are better key forward options than blitz at present. maybe in the future with some vfl forward time he could make an impact there, but at present if he is in the side it will be as that running utility/spare ruck option i think. i would play walker ahead of blitz if we are expecting marks and goals out of him.

A great tough game and we came out on top. We passed the test. Although it showed up our poor disposal and decision making at times. It was infuriating when we did short kicks to contests when he didn't need too. Brown and Sheringham need to lift in high pressure games like that. Not being glass half empty or anything as we lost games like that since 2011. CATTERS!!!

EDIT-I loved Duncan's composure at times too. That little kick to Hawkins was fantastic.

Cloke is still wondering, "What happened?"
Duh....

Cloke will wake up this morning wondering why he feels funny. Truth is its because Domsy wore him so close he changed his DNA.
And for a bloke that has copped his fair whack on here he deserves to get plenty of applause after last night. Took him so far out of the game he was playing in the car park.
Awesome effort Domsy!

Go Catters

Im over the moon tbh, doesnt matter how its done but its 4 pts. we are 3rd so we doing alright.
not much more to add that hasnt been said really, except the 3 HTB decisions against us were farcical, but the umpiring ok apart from that.
wish i was at the game though as channel 7 coverage was S.H.I.T.E. Yes, Stevie J was aggrivated. do we have to see it from every angle and mentioned every 5 mins? not once did they mention the outstanding job Guthrie did on Pendles.

And does this forum have to keep the tradition of picking on a player after every match (even if its a win)? Yes, Sheringham might not be on the list forever, we get it, but tonight he performed his role. yes he made a few fumbles, but i think its a safe bet everyone butchered the ball at some stage.
.. Im not sure this forum is picking on Teddy. At least a couple of us have sai he played OK to well. I said he was close to votes in my consideration. He may have limitations , so what all players do , if he can make thru hard work good luck to him. I do think he will lose his spot to better mids eventually unless he can offer a point of difference , ie back pocket etc.
I say again , last night he was ahead of several better credentialed players

Left field time boys.
Lonergan looks to have started this year even better than previous years yet IMO Taylor looks a 5th of a yard slower.
JK is smashing it in the VFL as a full back.
We have no-one able to take a mark and kick a goal to take some pressure off Hawkins.
JK in, Taylor to CHF?
Even if only for a week later in the year I wouldn't mind seeing it.
Taylor is a great asset to sneak forward and kick one, or in desperate times spend half a game there and kick 5 or 6, but we have the best two KPDs in the country it is our advantage. I like the suggestion about bringing in JK soon, but I would see him given a chance as third tall to start with. However I would rather keep Rivers and give JK a few more games in VFL for the moment.

Yeah, but it was interesting to see Blitz play forward, he has a roost on him, could have kicked two. If he could develop his aerial skills the guy could play anywhere. On the other note, I would be tempted to give Walker a go next week, three games for Brown is a reasonable opportunity for him, he has had one good game, one poor game and I thought he had a shocker last night. I know I have supported Brown and still hope he can make it, conversely if Walker is kicking goals and playing well he should get a go.

Ah yes, these two. I try very hard to be accepting of Bad Johnno given how good Good Johnno is, but geez he made it hard at times tonight. Caddy nearly gave up 2 goals in two minutes doing exactly the same thing - trying to do too much deep in defence and coughing it up. Know your limitations son!

CE , I thought we should have helped him out a bit. The made him a target , which pricked his pride into trying to do too much (imo). Someone in the side has to be prepared to wear weeks if someone trys that stuff on Sel or SJ and goes to far. I wonder if that tactic will be tried again on SJ

If anyone can help me with an interpretation of dropping the ball I'd appreciate it. I reckon I saw 30+ occasions when player A was tackled by player B (said in best Geish voice) and dropped the ball cold, or did so when they hit the ground. If this is not holding/dropping the ball then what is? Other than that I think the umps did pretty well.
