It’s round four, and it’s been an unpredictable season to say the least. When the Magpies beat the Tigers in round two, many thought that Collingwood would be the team to beat in 2019. However, that was put the a screeching halt, when the Eagles put on a strong performance against the Magpies. For the Bulldogs, they looked solid, with victories over the Swans and the Hawks. However, they were also beaten in round three, this time to an improved Gold Coast outfit.
The last time these two sides met was way back in round 10 of 2018. While the Bulldogs were looking good in the first half, they were unable to score a goal in the second half, with Collingwood running out six goal winners.
Collingwood
After having all the confidence in the world after beating Richmond, Collingwood were well and truly humbled by a disciplined, and more well rounded Eagles side. The Collingwood midfield that had been well hyped over the summer disappointed mightily, with only Adams and Pendlebury standing up for the Magpies. The midfield struggled on the defensive side, not working hard enough to get back, and thus putting immense pressure on the defense. The Eagles also imitated the Geelong swarming style to great effect, stifling any Collingwood run from half-back. If Collingwood are to win, they will need to work much harder defensively, and be able to counter that swarming style that teams will want to play against them.
The man to watch this week is Travis Varcoe. To start the season, Varcoe has struggled to have a strong impact on the game, and as a result was penalized with a trip to the VFL team in round three. Now Levi Greenwood makes way for Varcoe. If Varcoe is to re-cement his place in the Collingwood side, he will need to get his hands on the footy more, and make sure he hits the scoreboard.
Western Bulldogs
After round two, the hype around the Bulldogs was building. Many were wondering if the Bulldogs had managed to get that 2016 mojo back, and be able to compete for the premiership once again. However, all hype was killed with a deflating loss to the Gold Coast Suns. The Bulldogs were behind from the start, with the Suns jumping out to a quick four goal lead. The Bulldogs never recovered, and just could never bridge that gap in the end.
The man to watch this week is Josh Schache. The young forward has come under plenty of criticism this week, with many questioning his place in the Bulldogs side. Schache has struggled to solidify a role in the Bulldogs. He’s still very young, and plenty of time to develop, but his lack of role makes him an intriguing player to watch.

While the Bulldogs have shown some good form, it probably won’t be enough to stop this Collingwood team.
