Roast AFL 'round zero' What a load of crap ...

I mean that's works too.

that's means have 2 matches in each state for R1.

either way its way better than the dumb opening round crap.

Don't disagree with you, however why do I have the feeling the AFL won't agree, thus work out some dumb compromise, we all know it will happen.

I'd scrap it completely but if you're absolutely locked into having a round zero then I think Voss' suggestion is a good one.

We have a (nearly) national game and that should be celebrated - if you're going to have an opening round, why not have games in each state?

2 games in WA
2 games in SA
2 games in QLD
2 games in NSW
1 game in Victoria

Not ideal for us in Victoria (you'd probably want to make sure the game in Victoria is a big one) but there's something in it for everyone.

Yep you'd assume the Victorian one would be Carl/Rich. I'd probably like 2 in Melb though

hard agree

Could also have Melbourne play someone in Darwin, though the humidity this time of the year may be offputting.

Can we have less games in Darwin thanks they are the worst games to watch, teams struggle to score up there.

No games in Victoria! It's a national game, it isn't going to kill the clubs having to travel to start the year. Give all non-viv sides a home game to open the season, with the remaining game being an on-sold game (tassie, nt, alicesprings etc)

Last 6 games in Darwin

172
264
161
199
175
156

Average of 188 points per game.

How does that compare to the average at other venues around the country?

Take the 264 out as that's an outlier, only the 199 one would have been half reasonable to watch, 170 ish points, that's 85 each, that's very low. It gets dewy up there all the time. Less games the better or at least day games please before the dew comes in.

Now that I've had 2 years of it. Here's my solution

Maintain the NSW/QLD teams hosting opening Rd every year.

The 4 Victorian teams who play are always Collingwood/Essendon/Melbourne/Richmond. (Who plays who you can switch)

The NSW/QLD teams get their bye in Rd 1, and they get a derby in Rd 2 with 2 weeks of build towards it.

The 4 Victorian teams play each other in Rd 1 (Sorry Carlton/Richmond, but them the sacrifices we have to make) then their byes are built around ANZAC Day. With the midweek games around this time, they get a bye on paper, but don't really get one in affect more often than not.

It is surely heaps lower wasn't the G like 188 ish last year or something, take the outlier out but a 178 average seems ultra low. I'd have no issue if they were day games. They should play them before the dew comes in becomes a bar of soap, either that or improve the night ball technologies and we know they won't do that.

All non-Vic sides do have a home game to open the season. Which ones missed out?

We're obviously not playing games in the NT in March.

Something in it for everyone is what we get every week - which leads to the games in the Northern states getting pretty much ignored, which is the whole point of Opening Round.

It would be like doing Gather round but also having a game in every state in the same round.

How often do the WA, SA, NSW and QLD teams all have home games on the same weekend?

Imagine this as Round 1.

Richmond V Carlton
Crows v Port
West Coast v Fremantle
Swans v GWS
Brisbane v Gold Coast
Melbourne v Someone in Darwin

marquee games in every state or some combination of it to make sure everyone plays.......

would be ****in epic way to kick off the season IMO

This is the way

For a spectacular start sure but the AFL will not start the season with multiple local derbies.

Those games are always sell outs so they don't need a marketing gimmick to attract interest. They generate their own.

Round 1 sells itself. Always has. Always will.

Everyone wants to see if and how their club has improved. Not just clubs in northern states and the lucky few Vic clubs invited.

Nope. Cannot start in Darwin. We are in yet another heat wave. Overnight min of 26 / 27 degrees and 80% humidity.

You get up before sunrise, open the front door and the heat literally hits you in the face. Before sunrise. :$:$

Any team plays up here this time of year loses the following week. Guaranteed.

fair, as i said humidity would likely be off-putting.

Seems to be increased criticism of the current format in the media. Hopefully it will lead to a change, but I'm sure that bumbling idiot Dillon will double down and we'll do it all again next year.
Yeah well it’s is a predominantly vic media. Was being criticised before it started

What time of year were those games played because that will make a difference.
