Scoring is lower than ever, despite about ten rule changes designed to open up the game, so the writing is on the wall for the AFL. The only way to fix the game is to stop tinkering with rules and really change the game for the better with a big rule change. Bringing in zones would mean we finally get positional and open play again.

And it needn't be all the complicated.

Divide the ground into 3 parts, defence, mid and forward, and allocate six players to each zone. They must remain in that zone at all times. If a player leaves his zone, which is sometimes unavoidable, then a free kick is paid, or maybe it's a ball-up.

It will be easy to keep track of which players belong in each zone because no player may leave a zone at any stage. So crossing a line is an automatic alert for a free kick against, or a ball-up, whichever the case may be.

It's an elegant and simple solution.
