🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Not sure if he will come back regularly but from earlier posts
2008 - joined MCC waitlist
2011 - joined AFL Gold waitlist

Was just been offered provisional MCC membership and is 173 in the queue for AFL gold. So the gap is only a few years now
Gee I signed up in 2014 as a AFL Member and im 8814 ( approx ) and iv only moved up a few places..
I was going to give exact numbers but the AFL Membership website is not working properly.

Whats people views?
I live in rural Victoria.
I go to 4-6 Geelong games a year.
I am on the waiting list on the MCC as I signed up in 2013.
In reality, should I just sign up as a Geelong Finals membership as im not going to get the real benefits of as a AFL Membership?

do you only go to Geelong games?
do your wife/kids (if applicable) all go for Geelong

If the answer is yes then Geelong Club membership with guaranteed GF ticket will be better. I imagine the seating at GMHBA would be more premium and you would have better access for club functions.

The kicker is April 2009 MCC waiting list are now getting provisional so you arent far off that too. For now you would only miss out on a few category 1 games which i imagine are anzac day, some pies games, finals and Day 1 of the boxing day test.

If you only go to 4-6 games a year then I would go a Geelong membership, you won't get a GF ticket with an AFL membership anyway so up to you if you spend the extra to get GF guarantee with GFC. Most clubs have 3 or 6 game memberships, you could probably get a cheapo version of those as they have sales during membership drives.

The main difference is the cost of finals tickets which as a Geelong supporter you'll probably have to deal with each year. But the money saved from not buying a silver membership should more than cover the cost of finals tickets.

Thanks Gents, I think your spot on. For me basically only going to Geelong games, looking at it. Its not worth renewing my membership 👍

Hey Gang. I have just cancelled my AFL Membership so you won't be hearing from me anymore. I'll be moving into the "MCC Provisional Membership Waitlist Number" group if it exists.

I can't afford both a Provisional MCC membership and an AFL Silver Membership especially considering the path to Gold Membership is looking to take longer each year.

In good news anyone who's waitlist number was higher than my 173, you have just moved up one more spot. You're welcome :)

I'll still visit here from time to time to see how goes the battle. Good Luck.
Maybe I am missing something, but to cancel the afl membership at 173 in the queue, that is one of the craziest things I have heard. Basically guaranteed gold next year based on discussion with the afl and would rather be provisional mcc who can’t get into category 1 games and wait 5+ years for restricted and 15+ for full?

That's pretty much it. Much rather move across the ground and watch games from there and couldn't afford both memberships. And I don't think anyone is guaranteed gold next year the way things are going.

Does anyone else not really care about getting a gold membership? I have zero interest in attending a neutral Grand Final and I’m happy enough spending a potential Freo one with people I care about.

I thought the spirit of it was to attend lots of footy and save some money, spending 500 bucks for two decades for some arbitrary flex seems off. I genuinely just love going to games and filling in an afternoon, and it’s a chance to see a mate and not be dropping $80 at the pub. To be honest the best thing now is dropping into Marvel after work on a Thursday and not feeling guilty about leaving at half time if it’s a rubbish game.

Well for Collingwood it’s better value and better chance of getting grand final tickets.

For some clubs where you can still purchase club memberships with grand final access it’s probably less attractive now.

GF is/was one of the main selling points of the membership. If it's not for you, that's fine, I presume you won't take the upgrade to Gold when it's offered? But for the rest of us the GF access is a critical aspect of the membership so it cannot be removed and devalue the membership.

I signed up in 1997, when I signed up finals/GF access was a key component of the membership. Back then we were guaranteed 2x Prelims as well as the GF in Melbourne as well.

They should be up front with potential members and say there is an estimated 60-70 year wait for Gold these days

They should but they would prefer to mislead by only referencing the most recent intake, which implies that ppl who sign up now could be gold in 14 years. This is entirely irrelevant given how slowly the queue has moved in recent years and now that silver is full.

I suppose that is on par with the MCC who say the latest intake is:
Full: Feb 1993- Jan 1 1994
Restricted: Feb 2001 - Nov 2003
Provisional: Jan 2008 - Apr 2009

Wonder if we’ll lose the AFL members allocation as well?

Pretty painless process to secure tickets for the all Melbourne prelim final in the AFLW

Didn't appear to be any discount for AFL members. $20 for me. Kids were free.
