A mod derailing a thread? Really?
Thread would need a premise beyond whinging to actually be derailed.

Carlton could have got decent trade value from the Giants by offloading Kreuzer or Yarran whilst they still had currency, but they didn't, that's their own fault.

Well at least the AFL is doing it right. No point 'expanding' if you're just going to see the club fail in 10 years and merge with some shitty Victorian club (oh hey Carlton...).

I mean, they probably went overboard with the mini-draft picks, never saw a reason as to why we needed these 17 year olds on lists (like Hogan and O'Meara) before they could play, if GC and GWS wanted senior players trade their normal picks, but other than that...

they needed to build a list, what would you want - a team full of SANFL, VFL and WAFL hacks? A team full of Sam Reids, Josh Frasers, Jared Brennans? There were only so many Ablett and Ward type players to go around.

The draft picks and rights to 17 year old picks (guys like Weller and McKenzie - played a year in the teams before they played AFL) were more than fair imo. They had a list of 45+ to build up to, and took plenty of punts on home grown talent that were at best 50-50 propositions.

If the game's going to expand, then a team made from nothing needs draft top ups and concessions in an open market to build a reputation of success as soon as it can.
Firstly I highly doubt anyone is ever going to give a real shit about the Giants. The Suns most likely the same.

And the fact they need these things is a massive problem. The game didn't even really need expansion, just a useless dick measuring contest involving the A-League and NRL.

The joke that is the AFL's expansion. That's the premise.

I don't give a shit about what Carlton has or hasn't done. If I wanted to discuss that I would.

So why don't the AFL need expansion?

Surely growth of the game and a wider talent pool is only a good thing?

Especially when soccer is coming and RL is ever a force in the northern states...

Look in your own back yard before dumping on the expansion clubs. Carlton is quickly becoming irrelevant even in their own supporters eyes.
That happens when your team is a rabble. I started school and Carlton is in its darkest period ever. Finish school and the same shit is happening again and the chances of Carlton getting near GWS and others in the next ten years is extremely low.

Because the game at the time was already booming.

The markets they've gone into are rubbish. They won't succeedZ

I think that's a pretty naive assertion that Carlton should have offloaded Kreuzer while he still had currency. They didn't have a crystal ball to predict his further injuries. You'll find that most teams would've done the exact same. Especially at a period they thought they were building towards a premiership in.

So why make the thread now? Why not make it in the aftermath of them beating Hawthorn (a team who are a real scalp)?

Port got screwed worse than most clubs by the GWS and GC draft years, and look at them now. Perhaps Carlton should take a look at themselves before they even consider blaming the AFL and the draft for their plight.

They had to give something to get something. Agreed that they thought they were building towards a premiership, but they really should've known better than to think that in the first place. Even prior to this year they didn't know where their list was at

We were a rabble and rightly got those picks. Derp

I made the thread because this is the first time I've watched them properly all year

How did betts go today. Didnt he kick 5 or more. Shit he would be alright for carlton oh wait they shipped him off.
Don't forget Jacobs as well, he was their 4th best ruck apparently

How many 1st round picks does carlton want. Surely they have had more than gws in the last 10 years.
