What is this I hear about the AFL planning to cut half an hour from each game starting 2001?

Are they out of their tiny minds????

Perhaps if Channel 7 cut the length of commercials in between goals the AFL could claw back a lot of wasted time!

I saw it on the AFL site - maybe check out the archives. They think the average fan's attention span is dropping, and also think it will lengthen the careers of players if they don't have to punish their bodies so much.

I think it is really stupid because Aussie Rules is meant to be tough. Sure, the AFL commission is concerned about players receiving knee injuries, but that is a part of the game.

This is just another blatant example of the AFL tampering with too many rule changes. If the AFL are worried about the amount of injuries suffered in a game they are going down the wrong avenue in shortening the quarters. For starters, the majority of injuries are sustained when the players muscles are cold. Statistics show that a player is more prone to injury within the first quarter of play. If the player has sat on the bench for the first half he will be prone to injury when he comes on. Obviously knee injuries and any sort of broken bone injuries are exeptions to the rule. Also has the AFL commision thought about reducing entry fees if they are shortening matches by 30 minutes. The 2nd example of them tampering too much is this stupid rule of a player not being able to take possession of the ball if they are on the ground. If this rule comes into play we will never again see the magic of a Greg Williams like handball out of the pack, or an Ablett or Jarman goal off the ground. SURELY THE AFL NEED THEIR HEADS READ IF THEY ARE GOING TO BRING IN EITHER OF THESE TWO RIDICULOUS RULES.
