People here hyperventilating a bit too much.

If 'supplement' use goes across the whole league, then the perception will be that this is a grey area which has been exploited by everyone. At most, it'll lead to reform of the rules re anything beyond food and water going into footy players.

If we're talking banned performance enhancing drugs, then it will affect specific players/clubs but I can't imagine it affects the whole league. Armstrong couldn't keep it quiet in a team of a few guys, it would be impossible to keep hundreds and hundreds of footy players quiet.
Did you listen to the press conference? This is the biggest story in Australian sporting history. There will be no scapegoats. Every athlete and club involved will be punished, in some cases criminal charges will be laid.

At least the ashen faces and poor body language of Hird and co were genuine.

Biggest sports news story ever!
Yeah, Hird might have sat through a secret hearing in recent times.

The ACC has powers to force people to be interviewed in private - and you aren't even allowed to disclose that you've been interviewed, let alone what the discussion was about (democracy, yay).

That's not evidence that they were deceived. Maybe denk went to players and said "this is dodgy, but if you sign these forms, we can pretend you didn't know".

Again, doping agencies don't care. They hear all the excuses. Remember warne was given a tablet by his mum. So what?
Exactly, if they took something that had illegal substances in, they're still stuffed.

The onus is on the players and no form will get you out of it.

Exactly.

People hoping for an entire season or two of no EFC players available due to bans are clutching at straws.

wow, so essendon were smart coming out before the investigation announcement as it might mean their players might get smaller bans (ie less than 2 years, say 6 months or something like that).

this is conjecture of course, just interesting

I'd say it would be easer. "So 18 year old draftee, you want to play AFL? Then take these supplements or GTFO", "Someone will hear about this", "You'll be an pissed off 18 year old who's dreams got crushed by a club, we are a club with millions of dollars and a legal department"

Demetriou treaded VERY carefully there on the Essendon question when asked whether it came to light because the AFL was investigating them. A couple of decided pauses there. Warranted, but in those silences holds chapters of information he's keeping tight lipped on.

Can't wait for the next chapter. It's moving faster than The Hobbit!

I'll say it again. Maybe if I say this enough times it will sink in.
Subcutaneous and intramuscular injections are not banned under WADA unless the substance is on the prohibited list.
In this case the nurse appears to have delivered "subcutaneous injections". No problem unless the substance itself is banned.

What WADA have banned are "intravascular infusions" of any substance. These are commonly known as drips.
Remember when the Brisbane Lions rehydrated with drips at half time in 2001?
This was an example of an IV infusion and is banned by WADA, even though the substance was just water (and salt).
There is no problem with injections at all - it is just a media frenzy unless the substance itself was banned.

See WADA guidelines ...
http://www.wada-ama.org/Documents/S...ical_info_IV_infusions_v.2.2_March2010_EN.pdf

Intravenous injections with a simple syringe are permitted if the injected substance is not prohibited, the volume does not exceed 50 mL, and the intravenous injections are given at intervals equal or greater than six hours.

There will be no scapegoat. They will hunt down anyone responsible and punish them all.
If Essendon was wrecked over this, the ENTIRE LEAGUE would bleed.

Christ, some of the weaker clubs would have legitimate reason to fear for their own survival if the things they were wishing upon Essendon came to pass.

I agree that it seems incredible and the first reaction is disbelief. Speaking selfishly, I hope everything is tossed out and no big sanctions are required. Otherwise it could cost the rest of us millions.

But gee whiz, reports from senior journos on drug dealers, a sacked fitness guy, player unrest, consent/ waiver forms (highly irregular and slammed by AFLPA), players being "forced to continue taking drugs against their will", police investigations, comments from Healy, formal investigation, calls for entire senior management/ President to step down, strict liability under the drug code, off site injections, in a climate of drug awareness and concern that has never been greater.

Essendon doesnt know what went on (which is an utter disgrace in itself), so I don't know how these assertions can be unequivocally dismissed.

And I don't want to shoot Bambi here, but Doc Reid would surely like his time over again.

Bad practices, at a supposedly elite level, all round
After nearly all of the "facts" this tool has posted, and with the gleeful disgust as described by another, you think he'd pull his head in. Just in case his last one breaks from over use:

No, 12 months minimum (and I dare say de-registration)

from the report:

The principal substances identified through Project Aperio as being used were:
• growth hormone releasing peptides (CJC-1295, GhRP-2, GhRP-6 and hexarelin)
• growth hormone variants (AOD-9604)
• selective androgen receptor modulators (SARMs)
• insulin like growth factor (IGF-1) and mechano growth factor (MGF)

all illegal

Essendon are still innocent until proven guilty. This illustrates finally why the press conference took place. Let's just wait and see how the investigation plays out.

It doesn't look good, but what do you do.

Essendon are totally Forked. I know you realise this. They employed a complete known/highly suspected shonk to perform a quick fix and they are now forked.

Bad timing.
