Just saw an intersting article on the news.

An Australian company have developed a new device called 'Sports Ear'.

Ever watched a Rugby League or Union Game on tv and been able to here the Referee speaking (at least the ones that were miked up)? Well the same company that developed that has a new one. Refs and umpires are miked up, but transmitted only on a frequency that can be picked up by the little 'sports ear' receiver that looks like a miniture walkman, and worn by the spectators in the stands.

Apparently the company is having talks with the AFL about the use of it games next year.

What do you think? Could it be a hit?

Just imagine the shit the White Maggots will cop then. We all will now be able to hear (as well as already being able to see) a BAD decision being made. They all will need bodyguards just to leave the stadium! HEHE

There was an interesting situation in one of the NRL games last season between I think Wests Tigers and Auckland.

Apparently the voices of the refs are always relayed to the media covering the game.
A touch judge came into the ref and made a decision that resulted in an Auckland player being sent off. Video replays showed that the touch judge had made a very dodgy decision. Now apparently the voices of the refs are always relayed to the media covering the game. At half-time the refs got their heads together to make up their stories to cover up their stuff up. However, they had forgotten to turn of their microphones and was broadcast to whoever was listening.

Serve themselves right!

We'll be able to hear the umpires baiting the players before they report them!!!

We might have heard umpire Carey call "mine" before he took that mark.

We might have heard Diesel say "Piss off out of my way" before pushing the umpire!!! lol

How the frig is that gonna affect the game bomber0018?????

The umpires more accountable?

Sounds friggin great to me!! I hate waiting till I see the replay to hear exactly what the call was.

Perfect way to geta crowd involved!!

Not as if the players can hear it!! Won't affect how they play!!

If they spent less money by having less umpires the cream would rise to the top and the overall standard would lift.

I have an open mind in the "Ear". Any controversy is more likely to be us hearing the players abuse the umpires and not get penalised. Will probably just show up a lot more inconsistencies.

Bomber, how exactly would this new technology affect the game?

And the impression I got is that is isn't exactly going to cost the AFL for this technology. It is up to the fans. They want to be able to hear it, they buy the little 'sports ear' boxes and earpiece.

danni, its an interesting idea- but one that I find alot more interesting is "ref cam", which ive seen a bit of while watching NFL games this year.

One of the refs has a little camera attached to his hat, so you can see exactly what he sees, and what direction he's looking. Not only does it give you a great view of a certain play, it gives a good indication of why he made a certain call.

Imagine that in AFL. I bet we'd find that alot of umps are probably guessing from the wrong side of packs etc.

I bet the AFL, and Mr Geishen wouldnt be super keen on the idea.

OLD TOPIC.

Just heard and advertisement for this on the radio. Haven't heard of them before now, have they just been released (13 years after they were initially trialled)?
It's just a radio that goes down to the umpire mic frequency

Would be cool if it were somehow combined with a bit of game commentary. I like to listen to the radio at a match, especially if I'm sitting in a pocket or something and it's hard to see the opposite end

SportsEars gives fans at the game three listening options:
  1. to hear the 3 Field Umpires’ microphones constantly, the goal umpires and the SRO (Score Review Official) during a video decision
  2. to hear the informative Television commentary from Seven Sport or Fox Footy
  3. to hear both of these options split in each ear simultaneously.
This AFL SportsEars Premium model can be used at all Toyota AFL Premiership Season matches, the AFL Final Series and the NAB Cup matches across Australia where the MatchCom Umpires’ Communications System is being used.

All for the low low price of $80.00:rolleyes:

This has been around for a while.

Remember one rfc fan had it on during a Coll vs Rich game. Apparently at every stoppage bar one the umps were asking "where is King?", "who's got king?" and the like. Pretty much killed the notion Geisch pedals that umps don't target players

In their defense it was probably this game

I think it was the one after that one.

Tbh I don't mind umps targeting players, it makes sense. It just pisses me off that da Geisch thinks we are all complete morons, and keeps insisting the umps don't target or focus their attention on certain players, or go into games with any prejudices against certain players.
