What are you giving up for Dunkley though? Future 1st?

Alex Pearce isn’t leaving Freo to be a stop gap defender. He’d be leaving for a minimum 4 year deal. I’d say he’ll stay at freo on 3-4 years.

Tank, finish bottom, walk him through PSD.

Next year we could have a real lack experience with Heppell possibly going and not having many players older than Merrett with any leadership qualities. So we could try and get Cotchin who has a connection with Truck or someone similar like what Brisbane did with Hodge and Birchall. They would be able to be in a semi assistant coach role and they know what success looks like unlike our current group.

id be comfortable on both fronts tbh.

Pearce gives Reid/Brand/Eyre time to develop and be AFL ready. Pressure on spots never hurts too. I'd also like to see someone who can take best FF, so Reid can play CHB and Laverde can become our backline general/organiser as a 3rd tall.
F1 for Dunks i'm ok with too. Dunkley improves us in a critical area.

Add Dunkley & Pearce
Draft strategy of Sheezel, Davey's and do what we can to trade up (2nd + F2 to Swans for 1st & F2) and look to add best we can get

Ridley Pearce Laverde
Redman Reid McGrath
Merrett Dunkley Martin
Perkins Jones Langford
Sheezel Wright Stringer
Draper Parish Shiel
D'Ambrosio Hobbs Snelling Caldwell
with likes of Kelly, Hind, Guelfi, Cox, Heppell, Stewart, Durham and co also options for best 22 selections.
If we’ve learnt anything from this year it’s that we need forward 50 pressure players. That forward 6 isn’t going to help us get front half turn overs.

would love. we lost our best guy for it and I don't know where the replacement comes from.
probably the midfield as we push them closer to goal and bring the backline up the field. When we get that gameplan working I guess.

Lack of Tippa is really hurting at the moment.
We’d need north to some how win 3 games 😂
or just fold. Instant pick 1 :)

need a better mix of players who are purely there for pressure. Yes all 6 are individually good ball winning players, but structurally wise it wouldn’t work. If menzie can improve his pressure he can fill a role potentially, otherwise it’ll be going out and finding one trade week. We tried last year, would’ve loved rosas, don’t think hill was the type player we needed though. Someone like a Sam wicks would be perfect.

Lachie Fogarty or David Cunningham?
Or we hate carlton too much?

James Rowe not signed yet i dont believe
Castagna out of the tigs side
Ronke, been mentioned before surely he can chase with speed and duck his head a few times

The good thing is small forwards is the last thing in the phase of the rebuild as they can have immediate impact and also can find some good state league guys

Melbourne rolled with Kozzie and Spargo last year

Dogs Weightman, Scott, Mcneil types

Richmond have M.Rioli and J.Clarke this year

Pies Ginnivan, McCreery, Henry (bit bigger)

The club might feel Menzie, Tex, Davey, Davey can offer enough in 2023 and 24

Also i think Liam Shiels is our man

Id be focusing alot with our recruitment on training standards

Intensity and mongrel

Shiels has just turned 31 and has still played solid football this year when given the go. Still shutdown Neale for a win and never seems to be injured so we should get 2 years out of him. Would turn 33 half way through his last year

I think leadership and driving standards a real issue. I feel Hobbs can change that but still too early

Fogarty isn’t good enough, Cunningham isn’t a pressure forward

Davey isn’t exactly the pressure forward type, Tex I’m still not sold on and you can’t relying on him to play a meaningful role for 20 or so games next year. Keen to get a look at menzie, wouldn’t be surprised if he got a go this week.

Nick Hind probably needs to be given another go in this area

Hes great at rebounding off half back but loves to shift blame, avoid situations where hes in the firing line and doesnt run back hard enough

Id hope one of our first 2 players picked next year can start as a half back. A pretty good spot to start the career

Just think it would be worth a look for a 4-8 week continuos period

I think we should be going after Bray Shaw and the other one for me is Jake Lloyd. Lloyd is someone from a good system that would set standards, plays his role and actually controls the temp of game with ball usage.

I think it is in our best interests to actually stay out of the FA / Trade market until after next season unless we are looking at someone under 23 or a cheaper blue collar type that can add some depth. Lets face it despite the clubs 2 to 3 year call next year will be about developing the likes of Perkins , Martin , Hobbs , Reid , Cox etc
I know I have said I would trade Parish or Shiel if a possible trade came up but I can not see it other than Shiel asking to leave as Parish will stay so the bulk of the midfield group will be the same.

Taranto would be a nice get but his disposal efficiency is average and it’s an area we already struggle in. You’d have to worry about Hopper’s recent injury history too. Brayshaw is the man for me. Versatile, good ball user, team player and the best part is he’s a FA so shouldn’t cost us picks. Bit of a pipe dream though as I highly doubt he leaves Melbourne.

Free agency concerns me. If you could get a combination of Dunkley or Brayshaw or Taranto then you could potentially elevate the team into something that is genuinely competitive. But you cannot guarantee that and I don't see why we'd be a particularly attractive destination for any of those three players.

Only attracting one of them feels like a misguided 'win-now' move that we tend to specialise in. It's not enough to make us genuine contenders and you burn draft assets in the process. And these are draft assets that potentially fit better with the development of our other young talent (Hobbs, Perkins, Cox etc).

If you cannot get two of those guys I'd prefer we didn't go after any of those guys. And even if you could get two of those guys I don't reckon our forwards / backs are anywhere near ready to compete anyway.

Any of the following;
Travis Boak
Josh Kennedy
Josh Kennedy

I reckon Cotchin will play on.

So might Boaky 😕

getting a good, experienced player or two that fit needs isn't really burning the future though, any of those guys could feasibly be in the team for quite a while and our promising kids need guys like that around them, obviously we still want to draft and develop players like the ones you mentioned but for now we can front-load deals while we've extra cash to splash

I think Jayden Hunt would be a good free agent hit.

Fast, hard at it and aggressive. Problems around kicking but I think he could be an effective forward pressure type who helps drive professionalism.

Yeah I'd rather take our picks to the draft then cough any of them up for a guy like Dunkley.

Our drafting has been pretty solid the past few years. No reason to not go to that well again this year.
