How do we fit a bigger midfielder into the side? The issue with the proliferation of smaller midfielders we seem to have is that some of them will need to be left out to include the big midfielders we currently have (Setterfield and Tsatas). It’s the primary reason I was pro trading Parish, although given the quality of this draft maybe it’s better he stayed
Some options are

Shiel on his last year isnt he?

Play 1 ruck

Setterfield VFL

I wouldn't mind Zurhaar as a Stringer replacement.
We already have the Stringer replacement. Kyle Langford.
What we need is a genuine CHF so the forward line is
three small forwards , Langford , Wright and a CHF.

We will have to move away from a few of the current ones as we go along.

Isaac cumming would be the free agent that I would be target tbh

So we saw quite a big list cull this year and looking at next year's out of contract players I can see the same thing.

Reckon not next season but the one after is when Brad is targetting a real finals run.
Don’t think it’ll be a huge cull but we are certain to lose a bit of experience shiel, Kelly, heppell, stringer, guelfi, wanganeen in the firing line.

I cant see a world where Stringer is not on an AFL list in 2025

Probably same said for Shiel

Smart business putting 1.5mill in this years cap from Mckay

Leaves him at roughly ~650k a year for last 5 years where avg salary is around 520

Shiel will be elsewhere is my guess.

Stringer could potentially be elsewhere.

If mid year trading was a thing they would both be highly likely traded mid year to a contender if they were healthy.

Would you call it a cull?

Snelling was the only actual senior listed player to have played a game this year that was delisted.

We don't need a game changing midfielder or midfielders in the sense being discussed.

What would be game changing is hardball and defensive substance that will allow the kick chasers to kick chase.

Richmond is just another inconsistent also ran, no matter how well Dusty played, without the team of manic pressure players around Dusty.

More than 10 off the list is a cull. The purpose of a cull is to cut the bad parts.
First part is true but it’s tricky to cull contracted players en masse, so you end up culling whatever you can get your hands on, even if it isn’t the one you really wanna lose.

That said, we did delist a contracted Stewart and could’ve cut Shiel, so that’s two.

Maybe "culling" the list might be the wrong word.

Phillips
Lord
D'Ambrossio
Voss
Snelling
McBride
Tippa
Montgomerie
Stewart
Munkara
Zerk-Thatcher

Is exactly 1/4 of the list however. Of which only Zerk is someone who I see would have been best 22.

A lot of fat cut from the list.

5 rookies, two of which were cat B anyway so delisting them doesn't actually open spots for anything other than a long shot.

Then off the senior list: 2 retirements, 3 delistings and a trade, where both retirees and the trade could/did get a gig elsewhere if they wanted it.

Flip and Zerk were both best 22 in 2023, and absolutely someone would roll the dice on Walla if he wanted it enough to go after it.

Although I agree it's more than was required, and reasonably deep (feels like about the same as every year, but that's its own story). I was mostly just commenting that as far as cutting goes you're a bit hamstrung by contracts, so it takes more than one year to complete a proper cull.

It’s not just the contracts that are a concern. The talent pool each year is only so deep and if you cut too deep into the list you’re typically going to be replacing a lot of those players from the back end of the draft where quality can be few and far between. That runs a real risk of making the list worse over time as you’re getting rid of flawed but experienced players and replacing them with flawed, inexperienced players.
