AFL Veterans List Rules Clarified

Under AFL player rules, each club may nominate or list any number of what are called Veteran Player’s.

• In order to be eligible for classification as a Veteran a player must have been the age of 30 as at September 30 in the relevant AFL season and be on the primary list of the AFL club for at least 10 years or in the case of Port Adelaide since the inception of the club.
• From 2006 there is now no limit on the number of veteran players a club can list, as long as the player meets the required classification.

Salary Cap

• The salary cap, known officially as Total Player Payments, is A$8,780,000 for the 2012 season with a salary floor of $8,121,500 except for the Gold Coast, whose salary cap will be A$9,530,000 with a salary floor of $8,871,500, and Greater Western Sydney, whose salary cap is $9,780,000 with a floor of $9,121,500.
  Certain payments are excluded from the cap, and concessions are available for some players, in particular, "veteran" players (those over the age of 30 and/or who have completed 10 seasons with their current club) and "nominated" rookie listed players, who are discounted by up to 50% for purposes of the cap. The AFL Players Association negotiates for players with the AFL on the topic of average salary.

So my question is as follows guys. We have Pav and Sandi on the list already. Luke McPharlin is 31 on the 1st of December this year, however he debuted with Hawthorn in 2000 and didn't joint Fremantle until 2002.

So does this mean that Luke can go on our veterans list next season?

Hope the link works, here is an article on the rule changes but I can't find whether you are forced to move to the new arrangements it looks like you just have a diluting effect based on the number of veterans so if you add McPharlin you get a 33% discount instead of 50%.

It is very unclear though.

I also found this, it looks as though there is still a fair bit of clarification to come, not sure how clubs are supposed to manage their lists with so little guidance.

There was some confusion a while a go about how Pav and Sandi's contract would work under the new veterans rule. Found this AFLPA document which says on page 149 that they can still come under the old rule where half their contract is excluded from the salary cap, as opposed to the new rule where only a set $112K is excluded from the cap.

Should be common sense, that old contracts still have work the old way. Could involve a lot of legal issues otherwise.

All currently existing contract came under the old rule.

Veteran rule is simply 10 years service with no age requirement. There is also no limit on the number of veterans you can have, they can only have about 110k outside the cap though.

From memory, Crowley, Johnson and Mundy will qualify at the end of 2014, maybe even Duffield.

which would give us 450k outside the cap. I would think that Sandi and Pav between them are giving us a much bigger concession than that by excluding 50% of their salary.
I preferred the old rule as it encouraged clubs to hold onto long term players. And I suspect that this rule is one of the reasons that Geelong and Collingwood have moved on their older brigade.

Is the new rule only for contracts written up post the change? I know it sounds like a stupid question but the wording of press releases says "contract extension" so I'm wondering if the contract agreed to prior to these changes has been extended or a new contract in the new rules has been applied.

If we can scratch off the October 2014 finish date, write in October 2015, date it and Sandi and Bond initial it has there been a new contract signed or was the previous one just extended? It's a question that could literally mean $100,000s
