I know this is very early and we are still not sure whether N.Ablett is going to play or not, but based on the 44 players currently on our list (including rookies), what will our 'best' AFL and VFL sides look like? I am assuming that everybody is fit and available- meaning no room for VFL top up players including captain James Byrne.

Here is mine:

AFL
B: Rooke Scarlett Harley
HB: Milburn Egan Mackie
C: Enright Bartel Corey
HF: S.Johnson Mooney Chapman
F: Stokes Hawkins N.Ablett
FOLL: Ottens Ling G.Ablett
INTER: Blake Kelly Selwood Wojcinski

I am sure that we would see a taller Geelong side next year, especially if N.Ablett continues. I am biased, but even so it is hard to find a weak spot. For mine, Wojcinski, Rooke, Hawkins and Blake are the four under most pressure. Maybe an injection of pace is needed, so Rooke or even a Kelly could find themselves being replaced for structural reasons rather than form. Varocoe, Djerkurra, Byrnes, Tenace and Davenport would all relish the opportunity.

VFL
B: D.Johnson Lonergan Kangars
HB: Hunt Taylor Bedford
C: Tenace Prismall Davenport
HF: Gamble D.McKenna Byrnes
F: Varcoe S.Simpson Laidler
FOLL: West Moles Djerkurra
INTER: D.Simpson Mumford Donohue Hogan

The defence looks very strong, as with the midfield and small forwards. Plenty of run and ruck options on the bench. Could possibly swap one of Taylor or Lonergan to the forward line for McKenna to 'even' it up a bit maturity wise, though I think where I have put them is in their prefered position. There will be even more pressure for spots in the AFL team in 2008 as players like West, Lonergan, Hunt, D.Johnson, Prismall, Varocoe, Djerkurra, Byrnes, Gamble, Tenace, Davenport and Taylor all push for selection.

Thoughts?

prismall will be very shitty if he plays VFL all next year, but what can ya do ey.

he will be hoping for a soft injury or a lack in form from someone to get him a game, but i doubt we will have as good of run with injuries in 08 as we did in 07 and he will probly get a few games.

Geelong are mandated to play all AFL-listed players if fit and available. So, although this will never happen, if it did there would be no room, not even for James Byrne. Obviously though, as VFL captain you would slot him into the midfield and maybe move Moles to the HF line..

does geelong have a team in the VFL reserves also? if not, where do the top up players if not needed?
Nah we don't have a reserves team, but i think the players who dont be selected go and play for teams in the GFL and other local leagues, or even go to other country leagues from where they are from. not sure though...

I would keep Hunt in the backline and only play one of NAblett or Hawkins

AFL
B: Hunt Scarlett Harley
HB: Milburn Egan Mackie
C: Enright Bartel Corey
HF: S.Johnson Chapman Kelly
F: Stokes *N.Ablett Mooney
FOLL: Ottens Ling G.Ablett
INTER: Blake Selwood Wojcinski Rooke

*Hawkins

I think Varcoe can be something special so will put pressure on the players in that line up.

Heres mine:

AFL
FB: Harley Scarlett Milburn
HB: Mackie Egan Enright
C: Wojcinski Ling Corey
HF: Chapman Mooney Selwood
FF: Stokes N.Ablett S.Johnson
FOLL: Ottens G.Ablett Bartel
INTER: Blake Rooke Hunt Kelly

VFL
FB: D.Johnson Lonergan Bedford
HB: Donahue Taylor Kangas
C: Djerrkura Davenport Tenace
HF: Laidler S.Simpson Moles
FF: Varcoe Hawkins Gamble
FOLL:West Prismall Byrnes
INTER: D.Simpson Hogan Mumford McKenna

Hawkins could be in, definetly if there is no Nablett, and even with Nath we could go for 3 talls. Prismall should get a run, as well as Byrnes, Djerrkura, DJ and Varcoe. Blokes like Lonergan, Taylor, Davenport, Gamble, Tenace etc. will all be pushing for spots aswell. Hunt, Kelly and even Rooke will be fighting to keep their spots.

Lol... What a crisis we have trying to work out an AFL side! Name another club in the league that would have quality players such as Prismall, Byrnes and young guns Hawkins, West and Varcoe running around in the seconds.

I reckon this year will come down to players challenging rivals in the firsts for positions and if any of these players slip up, then selectors won't hesitate in dropping them.

So.. Prismall will challenge Kelly's position, Hawkins challenge Nath, West challenge Blake. Could be a bit of rotating to keep players on their toes.

Yah I hope Prismall gets more of a go, If he was playing with any of the 15 teams he would get a game. Players who id like to see get a few games this season are - West, Gamble, Lonergan. And also Tommy Hawkins well i cant wait to see him in full flight.

Well i suppose thats a good thing about our team we have got good depth.

So we have no room for a 2007 All-Australian player?
Are you saying you have his March 2008 medical report in your hands?

We are starting earlier than usual next season...Egan wont play NAB Cup either unless he drastically improves in the next month. Its a serious injury.

What sound fitness base are you picking him on? Or rephrased...whats the sense in rushing him back for round 1 2008 when we are playing a side its been proven we dont need Egan necessarily for team balance.

...and he wont be...

duh...

My original post related to round 1 2008 Reg...I didnt realise we had to keep stringently to the OPs in here all day. I've read a few other threads where that tends to happen too...(ie tangential commentary)...All thats being done here is listing the 44 guys on the senior list. Informative!..to me, its a pointless exercise right now when we havent seen 9 of them play yet (meaning where should we play them regardless of what types of players they are given most of them are babies)...and a guy named Ablett hasnt committed to the side for 2008 yet...and Egan wont be fit in time!

At this early stage you couldn't envisage too many changes to the team that won the flag. Obviously King and possibly/probably Nathan are the obvious two going out with Blake and Egan coming in. I actually will be interested to see how West steps up this year - it may not be a given that Blake will automatically be the only replacement for King.

It also appears that Egan will not come back for a little while into the season - his injury will now be managed very conservatively. So the team above represents a "best 22" for later in the year, again assuming that N. Ablett retires.

A team for round one may look more like-

B: Enright Scarlett Wojcinski
HB: Milburn Harley Mackie
C: Selwood Bartel Corey
HF: S.Johnson Mooney Kelly
F: Stokes Hawkins Chapman
FOLL: Ottens Ling G.Ablett
INTER: Blake Prismall Rooke Djerrkura

Did I force you to participate in this thread?

"Assuming all were fit and available" was a fairly obvious mandate, I am well aware of Egan's injury, and N.Ablett's possible retirement, but the point of the thread was to get folks 'ideal' teams according to their opinions based on the list as it stands now, again assuming all were fit and available

I am sure that nobody forced you to respond to this thread, if you think it is a waste of time, fair enough- but no need to be negative and try to ruin it for those who are interested and want to participate.

If Nathan doesn't come back is there an argument for playing Hawkins every week? He will have weeks where he won't get the ball. But what is the fastest way to improve him as a player? We can't judge him on a week by week basis for selection, we have to think where we want him to be by the end of Rounds 22 in 2008 and 2009.
