A bunch of players from metropolitan and country ranks will give recruiters some fresh faces to scout in the third AFL Victoria Young Guns game on Saturday.
Old Brighton’s Hamish Dick, Berwick’s Will Arthurson, Vermont’s Adrian Kalcovski and Wandin’s Pat Bruzzese have been called up for the match, to be played at Werribee on Saturday as the curtain-raiser to the VFL clash between Werribee and Port Melbourne.

Alex Cincotta from Newtown & Chilwell, David Handley from Geelong West, Jake Thrum from Golden Square, Bailey Patterson from Korumburra-Bena, Kaine Mercovich from Port Fairy and Harris Jennings from Portland join Arthurson in the Country squad.

Kalcovski, Dick and Bruzzese are in the Metro squad.

Dick, 19, is a mid-sized forward and has been generating buzz in amateur ranks.

He played in Old Brighton’s under-19 premiership last season and has moved into the senior team coached by the experienced Greg Hutchison.

“He’s a very damaging kick, a smart player and he’s lightning quick … he’d be the fastest player in our team by quite a bit,’’ Tonners captain Harry Hill said.

“He’s come through school footy (at Brighton Grammar). He played a few senior games last year, started this year in the ‘Unders’ and has played in the seniors since. Has been best-on in a couple of games too.

“He’s got attributes that I think AFL clubs like. He’s got a lot of upside and potential, he’s got the athleticism, he’s a nice kick. He could be anything really.’’

Vermont’s Adrian Kalcovski, seen here playing for Eastern Ranges, has been a “real find’’ for the Eagles this year.

Vermont’s Adrian Kalcovski, seen here playing for Eastern Ranges, has been a “real find’’ for the Eagles this year.

Hill said Dick was friends with fellow Brighton Grammar students Joel Crocker and Harry Reynolds. Both were drafted last year.

Kalcovski was on the Eastern Ranges’ books in 2017-18 and trained at VFL club Port Melbourne ahead of 2019. He was among the last players cut.

The Borough asked him to stay as a train-on player, but he chose to return to Eastern pacesetter Vermont.

He’s played the past seven games in the seniors.

“He’s playing some really good footy for us. He’s been a real find,’’ Vermont coach Harmit Singh said.

“In the first game against South Croydon he started as a midfielder. He’s pretty much gone through midfield, wing, forward, but he’s predominantly been forward and had experienced players like Brett Eddy, Andrew Ainger and Jake Best to look after him.’’

Singh approach Eastern three weeks ago suggesting Kalcovski should be pushed up.

“I think the Young Guns games are made for that,’’ he said. “Obviously he’ll miss a game with us but we’re always supportive of our players pursuing higher opportunities.’’

Arthurson is part of VFL club Frankston’s Academy program and has been getting glowing notices for his performances in the Outer East competition this year.

He played a handful of games at Dandenong Stingrays two years ago.

Keysborough’s Riet Pal, who is on Collingwood’s VFL development list, is another to watch.

“He’s only played a few years of footy. This is his third since one year of Under 12 footy at Cheltenham,’’ Keysy coach Matt Ferguson said.

“His improvement has been remarkable in such a short period of time. He’s a really smart kid and he can take a lot of information in.

“He’s got some good attributes … his breakaway speed from the contest, his leap, his marking, his tackling. He’s a pretty well-rounded player.’’

Keysborough ruckman and former Collingwood player Chris Bryan recommended Pal to the Pies.

Vic Country coach Danny Frawley gave Cincotta some lift-off after his performance against the VAFA last Saturday.

“Alex is 21-22, he’s powerful and a beautiful kick,’’ he told the Geelong Advertiser.

“He sacrificed his game for (Josh) Green today. He really knuckled down and didn’t give him a sniff after halftime.

“They’re AFL attributes, to be able to play on a guy like Green — he’s still a good player.’’

The squads for Saturday’s match took into account:

● the level of exposure for players (VFL or NAB League);

● nominations from AFL recruiters;

● the number of Young Guns games played this year;

● feedback from VFL/NAB League clubs;

The final teams will be confirmed on Friday.

The Young Guns match will start at 11am on Saturday.

I like that there’s a few from our VFL program.

Good luck to them all. :)
