Surely Navy shorts wouldn't have hurt.I'm guessing it's because Melbourne don't have royal blue shorts made? They normally only wear royal blue in away games.

I don't think that's really necessary, unless both versions end up being worn at some point. The AFL just needs to co-ordinate the round better and make sure every club designs something suitable for the matchup they're in.
