Rumour mill alive and well - AFLNT to re-align with Gold Coast Suns - Not confirmed - Probably incorrect.

Makes sense
Adelaide dominated 2019
Split them of the nt
And if you give it to the weakest club off field, you can make their women’s stronger potentially bringing in new fans and growth of the suns.

I don’t want it. But I wouldn’t be shocked if there’s some behind the scenes meddling being done by the afl to weaken the crows after last season.

Ps. I’m not normally a conspiracy theorist but this one makes sense. Why have 1 team dominate when there’s such parity in the league and adelaides didn’t really lose anybody from their premiership team.

Why would it be a conspiracy if it were true?

Surely managing the league in the best interests of the league is their job?

So as a result of the reported mutual parting of ways, Adelaide would get an extra game in SA while keeping Ponter. Doesn't sound too crippling to me. Having four premiership players on their list recovering from ruptured ACLs is probably a bigger obstacle.

The Suns already have their partnership with Mackay, so if they were to also play a home game in NT then it only leaves them two on the Gold Coast. An away game against Brisbane would at least give them three matches in SEQ though.

The when if ever, Sam Kerr struts her stuff in the AFLW is getting further away, currently playing the US, the Euros are chasing her & their season clashes with the Aus season thus putting pressure on the FFA.

1. Parents of AFLW players are now campaigning for a longer season, starting in 2020.

2. SEN Radio is reporting the AFLW will expand to 18 teams by 2024- new teams will start to be added in 2022.

Daisy Pearce said (paraphrasing) that a BIG majority of players want the AFLW season to be extended in 2020, with more games- there is dissatisfaction with the 2019 short Conference system. They are training as semi-professionals, & want a longer playing season to improve their skills/show their wares..
(AFLW player parents' campaign for a longer season implies players fear negative repercussions from the AFL if the players publicly agitate for a longer season).
Players also want the 2020 season fixture to be announced ASAP! They need certainty, & the ability to plan for their job commitments, etc.- virtually all have jobs.

Pearce also said the AFL & the broadcasters are reluctant to expand the season now, until "the entertainment product improves"- but said how can their average skills improve if the actual no. of games is so short. Pearce says she understands their argument, but it is misconceived- because there is a satisfactory public appetite/"market" & acceptance for tough, competitive AFLW matches: most fans know & understand the AFLW is not, yet, comparable in skill levels to the AFL, & enjoy it for what it is now.

Pearce expressed no views as to when, specifically, the AFLW season should be played.

3. The AFL has performed very admirably with creating the AFLW in 2017, & boosting enormously female GR AF nos. With 14 teams in 2020, IMO, the AFL will expose itself, rightfully, to scorn from the players, & a public backlash, if it doesn't extend the 2020 season- at least by an additional 3 weeks cf 2019.
Don't schedule any AFLW games on the nights the men's & women's Tennis Open Finals occur (schedule a new game time of Sunday evening &/or Monday evening, which is in school holidays- ditto for BBL Final)

Also, season 2020 is likely to be 8 games, plus a 3 week finals system (2019, 7 + 2 weeks)

AFLW player parents wil, shortly,l campaign publicly on this issue for a longer season (implying players fear negative repercussions from the AFL if they publicly argue for a longer season).

Having a longer AFLW season will encourage MORE girls & women to play AF- which will contribute to raising standards more quickly.

*Small typo there. 18 teams by 2024 (not 24 by 2024).

Rob Chiocci already proved it earlier in the year, the Dads oughtta cool their jets. The Damir Dokic method probably isn't as productive as they realise. Alicia Eva and Peta Searle pack more measured and informed views on the extended fixture issue into mere soundbytes.

An example of how they could bring Round 1 forward a week while minimising clashes with high-rating FTA tennis and cricket:

Friday, 24 Jan (BBL 6pm-Midnight on 7, AO Men's Semi Final 7.30pm-10.30pm on 9)
No AFLW

Saturday, 25 Jan (AO Women's Final 7.30pm-9.30pm on 9)
1.30pm (1pm local) - Adelaide v North Melb.*, Norwood [7]
3.30pm - Carlton v Richmond, Princes Park [7]
5.30pm (4.30pm local) - Gold Coast v GWS Giants, Mackay [7mate QLD & NSW]
9.30pm (6.30pm local) - West Coast v Brisbane, Lathlain [7mate WA & QLD]

Sunday, 26 Jan (BBL 2.30pm-10.30pm on 7, AO Men's Final 7.30pm-10.30pm on 9)
12.30pm - St. Kilda v W. Bulldogs, Moorabbin [7]
2.30pm - Melbourne v Geelong, Casey Fields
4.30pm - Collingwood v Fremantle, Victoria Park [7mate WA]

Not even inventing new timeslots either, those have all been used this year and/or last.

*May or may not be worth opening the season with Collingwood again, likely to be a much better team in 2020 at least

When would the fixture get released? Im absolutely hanging for it!!

“After months of negotiation, the AFL and the AFLPA have agreed on a proposed CBA, which needs to be voted on and agreed to by the AFLW playing group.

The proposed CBA would see the 2020 season comprised of eight rounds of home-and-away matches and three weeks of finals (up from seven and two in 2019), with the 2021 and 2022 seasons having nine rounds and three weeks of finals.

Fans were hoping for a 13-round season to match the 14-team competition (with Gold Coast, Richmond, St Kilda and West Coast joining next year), but that will not occur until at least 2023.”

I was just doing some thinking and maybe this could be the week by week makeup?

Friday
7:15pm (Fox Footy or Seven)
Saturday
3.05pm (Fox Footy)
4:45pm (Seven)
7:15pm (Seven)
Sunday
1:05pm (Fox Footy)
3:05pm (Fox Footy or Seven)
4.05pm (Fox Footy)

Seven would continue with their Double Header on a Saturday and could either take a Friday Night too or the Sunday afternoon.

This is a quite alarming situation.
- Players are refusing to sign the CBA.
- They are looking at the option to split and form their own players association
- Players want a full season in 2020
- Gillon McLachlan says the broadcast deal can’t fund a full season.
- He won’t play more games unless they are televised.
- The AFLW is running at a loss.
- Gill says that if they want more games, the standard needs to improve.

what would be the issue of televising say, 4 or 5 of the 7 games a round? I would prefer a full season where they play every team once but some games missing out on coverage than a conference system

That's exactly right. Just look at the WBBL. Not all matches are broadcast on TV. The AFL could stream the additional matches on their website too (using the streaming services they use for the Nab Under 18 Championships and the Nab League).

The logical solution would be to just have a full season. That is the fairest scenario.

Its not just that - the costs wont be met for a full season - possibly ever. Go to far in either direction and your up against the Cricket and Tennis, or up against the main AFL season, having the wonderful bonus of putting your crowds and tv audiences at about the same level as the W-league, with more expense due to greater list size, while destroying state level womens football.

Thats without the strain on club staffing trying to support both the mens and womens teams at both state and AFL levels, instead of being able to share these across both at the moment.

Its making a loss now - double the length of the season and that loss is only going to be greater. The broadcast income is bugger all at the moment - and is going to be less and less visible and less appealing to broadcasters, and streaming income for the league isnt exactly going to go bananas.
