Teams

There will be 8 teams in the 2017 edition, from 13 applicants.
The remaining 5 applicants (North, Saints, Geelong, Richmond, West Coast) have been granted provisional licenses, pending womens game development in their areas, originally slated for 2018. However Simon Lethlean from the AFL later said it was more likely to be 2019.

Players

The eight clubs have been asked to nominate their preferred marquee players. The AFL will try to keep players in their home states, and apparently the players will have a say in their destination.
  • The AFL will assign marquee players to clubs, initially this will be limited to two marquee players per club.
  • Clubs can submit 5 marquee nominations as a 'wishlist' of which they will receive two players.
  • Marquee contracts will be for one season only.
  • State based drafts to be held on October 10
  • Lottery based draft system
  • A father-daughter rule will apply for any father who has played 1 game for any AFL club with a womens license.
  • 2 Marquee players for each club were formally announced on July 27.
  • The priority selection breakdown allows Carlton, Collingwood, Melbourne, the Western Bulldogs and Fremantle to pre-sign one player who has an association with the club. Adelaide and the Brisbane Lions can each pre-sign two players, while Greater Western Sydney has the option of four.
  • The eight clubs also can each list two rookies (players new to the code or who have not been registered in organised football competition over the past three seasons).
  • The rest of the clubs' player lists will be completed at the AFL women’s draft in mid-October.
List structure

  • 2 marquee players.
  • 20 drafted players.
  • 3 free agents (players who don't get drafted). [This can be ex-players]

Op has been updated with the following sections added or changed

The Draft
Player Contracts and Payments
  • MARQUEES will be paid a confirmed $10,000 marketing component and proposed $15,000 playing fee.
  • PRIORITY pre-signings — one at each Victorian club and Freo, two at Adelaide, Brisbane and GWS — will command a proposed $10,000.
  • HIGH draft selections — possibly four at each club — are also on the $10,000 mark.
  • REMAINING players would receive the minimum $5000.
  • Private health insurance isn’t included in the proposal, meaning players could have to shell out thousands for cover, eating into their wage. That cost could be defrayed by deals brokered by the AFL with insurance companies.
  • Players will sign an employment contract based on an hourly rate of pay, which means there will be restrictions on how much time players can spend at their club each week. Players could be limited to nine contact hours a week outside match day, which could equate to three training sessions.
  • The players will be required to do 20 hours of appearances and marketing duties for the AFL as part of the basic contract.

Princes Park not good enough to host a womens game between Collingwood and Carlton - the league wants it at the Holden Centre according to The Age, presumably because they can play under lights there.

The league is also talking about Collingwood and Carlton's game being at the Magpies' training base, the Holden Centre.

New logo for the inaugural Women's League.

The logo for the AFL Women's competition features a stylised 'W', with iconic goalposts and a goalsquare.
The logo, developed in consultation with the AFL women's advisory group, was released in Melbourne on Monday morning.

The AFL said the 'W' logo paid tribute to the heritage of the AFL logo, with the posts and goalsquare presented in a "contemporary, energetic, and youthful manner".

A bit of a mixed (mostly poor) reception on the logo on the main board. Have to admit that I struggled to work out what it was meant to be at first (probably a reflection on my poor perception skills than anything). Once I worked out (read someone else's post) that it was goal posts and goal square, with nothing to use as depth perception, I then thought it was from some weird underground-looking-up type perspective, so I changed the colour on the goalposts to provide a point of reference.

Then the discussion moved onto the fact that as a stand alone logo it's near impossible to work out what it's advertising unless seen in conjunction with the AFL logo, so I did a crude mock up of something that could have been used as a stand alone logo and not lose the effectiveness of the goalposts and the W.
Colours could be changed (not sure why they chose orange) and design tweaked.

In coaching news, the Blues have appointed four new assistant coaches to join Keeping: Scott Gowans, Jane Lange, Graham Burgen and Jackson Kornberg.

Gowans held the position of senior coach of the AFL Victoria Country Youth Girls team, while Lange is a premiership coach at the Darebin Falcons.

Burgen and Kornburg also have a wealth of coaching experience, with Burgen most recently the senior coach of the AFL Victoria VWFL Academy, and Kornberg an assistant coach with the Sandringham Dragons Football Club.
