I think clubs would be careful with it unless there was some huge payout to the winner. Early on clubs are just testing the youngsters and working the veterans returning from the 4 or 5 operations they have every year so I am not sure it would be any more interesting than the jlt series which is just practice games. I think it is rather pointless really, T20 it will never be.

Look the All Star/ Indigenous Team half football half AFL is a failure
This I fear will have similar repercussions and results

It could be turned into a successful quasi-BBL equivalent if they followed a lot of that competition's structure. Predominantly, creating eight NEW franchises that somewhat, but not exactly, resemble state teams. Lure whatever players you can with handsome paychecks, including recent retirees and maybe some skilled but "fitness impaired" types from lower leagues, promote the daylights out of it and it'd probably take off.

This doesn't seem to be what the AFL have in mind for it at the moment, and even if they did, whether this would actually be good for football is another thing.

Pretty sure this is designed to grow the game internationally. Footy is a bloody hard sport to organize outside of Australia because of these two key points:

- Proper sized ovals are rare
- Getting 36 players, and associated umpires / coaches etc is bloody hard

I play in a league in the US and we are lucky enough to have 5 teams - but have never played a 18 on 18 game and usually each game is around 12 per side. Once you get to smaller cities or cities without a big expat community you'd never get enough for a proper game

To me it's all about promoting the game.....I think it's worth a go. Might bomb out but never know if you don't try. AFL could take over AAMI Park...

I just wish the AFL would pull back on trying to promote the game and catering to those people who really couldn't give a shit about it, and consider promoting the game to existing supporters who are losing interest.

Made up by some marketing gurus who have no feel for the game and are looking at 20/20 cricket and feel that afl needs an equivalent which it doesn't. Garbage concept.
T20 made sense because the other versions of the game were eight hours and five days. Aussie Rules hits that sweet spot of three hours of entertainment. It's also getting faster every year, we don't need a hyperactive version.

Add to that the same old argument rolled out every year against SOO, namely that clubs don't want players getting injured in games that aren't related to their quest for a flag.

Then they put this out. **** off.

I'm not sure how this is supposed to "grow the game". If somebody is already not interested in AFL, I can't imagine how or why this would suddenly convert them?

Might not be much good, but for mine extra footy is always welcome.

Don't understand all the negativity when I hasn't even happened yet, surely people can wait until it's played before bagging it.

Garbage idea only designed to fill out junk time and space in the mainstream media as well as catering for the lowest denominator like most industries are doing these days, I.E like the TV and Music industry etc.. Can't see it working us footy fans ain't fools and we know a turd when we see one. Through I doubt this is for the normal footy fan more like for theater goers and people who have never probably watched a game of footy in their lives! Still can't see it working or lasting for that matter, doubt the players will enjoy it either.

Also why would the AFL want to take over AAMI Park when they have a perfectly own stadium that can be converted in to a rectangular shaped pitch?

Complete and utter garbage.

But I'll still probably tune in - as will others out of curiosity - so no doubt the AFL will hail it as a huge success.

All it will take is one serious injury for players and clubs to start pushing back and refusing to participate.

There are many better ways the AFL could be spending their money. This is a mere gimmick and I'll be stunned if it is not a flop.

It's not necessary, the main attraction (which is AFL) isn't dying off in fact it's doing better than anyone in the country. Unlike cricket which was losing numbers and needed to revitalise itself with a new format to lure new fans in who detest test cricket.

The AFL has only looked at the cash cow concept, but hasn't realised it isn't necessary when your main competition is flying.

I don't like the idea of it, and i don't want it to stick around. But i will probably watch a game in the bye round out of curiosity

I'm very interested in the concept....I think they'll want to put some chips on the table though if they want numbers for this bye weekend

My issue at face value is they appear to be largely removing the "neutral restart" which is a borderline fundemental to the game imho. The game need not be "faster", Australian football is easily the fastest football code already.

The purpose is explicitly two fold - 1) to provide an official "small" version of the game to help facilitate expansion (both playing and spectating) particularly internationally and 2) to provide an elite reduced form of the game that could fill times of the year the game currently doesn't have a "footprint" (such as October and November)

The first is a no brainer. The "large" nature of the game - player numbers, oval size, officials requirement, complexity etc - is a big impediment to the game's growth.

The second Is also a no brainer. One option would be to deliver the SOO through the 7s format. Otherwise a shorter, lower impact form of the game, if it took off, could provide something worth watching in October and November before the tests / big bash starts with the aflw kicking off in February.

I don't get the reflexive negativity.
