I thought since the other leagues are getting a go, why not make this full-on with current results in every state .... and I won't even bother with attendance figures !!!!

Southport 16
Broadbeach 16
Mt.Gravatt 8
Morningside 8
Magpies 4
Mayne 4

Leading goalkicker: P. O'Brien (Redlands) 35

Mounties and Morningside continue to disappoint with hot and cold performances. Big upset of the round being the Sharkies return to previous years' form and lead go to whoa over the Cubs. Mayne and the Maggies are starting to show the strain of "new club status", and it looks as tho' the rot has set in. Good to see my local side Redlands having a dig of recent. Eagles are still my dark horse for the flag, but will have to start turning in some more consistent performances.

This week -
Saturday
Southport should be far too strong for Mayne at Southport
Redlands should win a brawler at Victoria Point (R)
Magpies might upset a shake Mounties at Klumpp Road (Mt.G)
Sunday
Eagles to win a toughie against Labrador at Zillmere (NE)
Lions to comfortably roll Broady at Broadbeach

I live in Melbourne, but I was born at Southport. I check out their scores every week. Why are they hated?

I dunno how old you are, but anyway here goes .....

Up until 1982 they played in the Gold Coast league, dominating in the last few years while there. Finally the league relented in '83 thus allowing them into the QAFL, providing they change their logo from the Magpie, as Sherwood Magpies from the SQAFA were also being admitted.

The big spending Sharks then bought a number of current QAFL players from existing clubs, and went on to win the senior and U/19(?) grand finals in their first year.

I could go on and rattle off their competition and history stats since then, but it's safe to say that Southport have by far been the most dominant club in the QAFL/AFLQ since their 1983 inception.

Come the arrival of the Bears in 1987, being on the Coast gave them some unofficial "right" to all the excess Bears players not playing VFL that week. The worst bit was, a number of these Bears "throw-offs" were actually contracted from QAFL clubs Southport were now playing against.

Needless to say, a definite hatred emerged as the Sharks chalked up premiership after premiership. They also had a knack of fielding players easily disliked (Capper, Middlemiss etc). They are now regarded as the benchmark as they line up for flag number 5 in a row !!!

In a nutshell ....

Fair enough. I moved to Melbourne when I was 3. So I was unaware of the history of the Southport club. I can understand why people in Queensland would feel that way.

I think that it is great that the Australian Football League has stepped in to take over the Queensland leagues, so that state leagues and grassroots leagues in that state can continue to work and give the people something to cheer for on a Saturday or Sunday arvo. Also that people like the bloke that posted the AFLQ results (Mud 'n' Blood), still enjoy local footy.

Some questions for the AFL Queensland buff...

1. Who is the dominant club of the State League?
2. Why is that club dominant? (How many flags)
3. How many people get to the games?
4. Best AFLQ/QAFL Grand Final attendance?
5. Friday night matches?

1. Southport. Northern Eagles and the Lions Cubs are also strong.
2. 10 of the last 18 flags, including the last 4 straight.
3. A couple of hundred?
4. Do they even count? Be lucky to be 1000 in the modern era.
5. No.

Try www.aflq.com.au for some history.

WHAT?! No Friday nights for local QLD football?! What crap!

Have any of the suburban grounds the AFLQ league use have lights for night matches other than The Gabba? We here in Adelaide now have night matches again. Only 2 grounds have light towers powerful enough to have night games.

As for attendance, I suppose I could blame that on the fact that Queenslanders have been on a constant diet of Rugby.

Questions
1. Southport have been the most dominant since they entered the QAFL in 1983
2. Sheer weight of flags !!!! They really became the most hated when the Bears were based at Carrara and all the throw-aways played for them.
3. Huh! Some bigger games pull a thousand, but generally 100-200.
4. I have a ********load of grand final figures at home, and can vividly remember packed Windsor Park 12,000-14,000 and Gabba ~20,000 for a number of grand finals. These days around 2000 max at Coorparoo.
5. Would be an interesting test. I know the rugby league does it sometimes and gets better than average crowds.

BTW, there is a big difference between "rugby" and "rugby league", and rugby league is by far the more popular code, although Rugby's Super-12 comp is fast gaining ground.

Anyway ........

Standings - Round 7
Lion Cubs 20
Southport Sharks 20
Northern Eagles 20
Redlands Sharks 16
Labrador Tigers 16
Broadbeach Cats 16
Mt. Gravatt Vultures 12
Morningside Panthers 12
Western Magpies 4
Mayne Tigers 4

The 'Siders and the Sharks put on the predictable rough 'n tumble affair, the Panthers getting away in the third term. Southport ... well .... hammered a hapless Mayne. What more can I say ? Lion Cubs won a scrappy affair over the Cats. Mt.Gravatt showed a little of the form that took them to two grand finals in the 90s, while the eagles got in by the hair on their arses at home. The table now is starting to show the shape it will probably take at finals time, although Morningside are surprisingly much lower than expected.

Next week - Saturday
The coast's local derby should probably see the Sharks slightly too strong for Labrador at Labrador.
The Eagles should belt Mounties at home.
Broadie should be far too tall for a game Tige's at Kedron.
The Panthers should blitz the Maggies at home.
Sunday
Lions to win a toughie against the Victoria Point lads at the Gabba.

'til next week .... catcha.
