We're playing the Reddies on Sunday.

Have a reasonable side on the park for a change, but missing a couple of key weapons in our big gun forward and probably our best player who plays CHB (broke his arm vs Collingwood Park).

Despite this, it could be the best saide we've fielded this year, with no 1st gamers, 1st year players or genuine passengers.

I'll be making my first appearance of the season, as long as the doctor doesn't give me any bad news on the busted arm tomorrow. Been training fine, with only a bit of dull pain - so I think the break is healed!

Hi All,

How are we all going after the break? Sorry haven't replied in a while been busy and shoulder is doign well but season is over now for sure.

Been very quiet on here for a while?

How is everyone fairing at the moment? Buffs recorded their first points on the board on the weekend with a hard fought draw againest collingwood park. and we have yeronga in our sights next weekend at home.

Well done Buffs. Coll Park are a very much improved team this year, so that is a great result. Looking forward to getting down to Dauth Park for the big clash this Friday. Should be a great contest.

Thanks to the Yeronga boys for sticking around for a beer at the end of the game its great to see in local footy that we can all have a beer after the game. Also clubs to rely on that and if every team sticks around after a game at opposition groudns for just one beer it helps to get money over the counter. On behalf of Beenleigh I will apologise for the ugly incident just before half time.

Not usually hard for us to convince ourselves to stay for a beer mate ;)

Thanks to your boys for the game and there isn't any need to apologise for the actions of one individual.

Agree with you on the sticking around for a beer front as well.

Thommo can you shed any light on teh Woodsmen forfiet?

I heard that Collingwood Park had forfieted too but were still going to play with some of the Uni players in a scratch match but it appears that the results from that game stood AJ anything to share as to what happened there? I won't get to bond this weekend as i have commitments with the 2s at hoem v Redcliffe.

Sure.

We have a squad of about 35 this year and have struggled for 22 a few times, but generally have been ok. Had 20-21 a few times.

Then we copped a few injuries to 5 or 6 blokes, we struggled to put 22 out there against Bond last weekend. To add insult to injury, 3 blokes got injured in the first half vs Bond. So we now have in excess of 10 blokes unavailable due to injury. For the Reddies game, in addition to these 10 blokes, I was unavailable due to moving house (couldn't do it any other day unfortunately) 2 coppers were unavailable due to work committments, another bloke had a uni exam, another bloke was overseas and we also had the ~10 injuries. We did the ring around and could muster only 11 available players, so that was that.

Off the top of my head, we have had so far this year:

2 x ACL (season)
3 x broken arm (including me, but the other 2 are now out for season)
1 x torn achilles (season)
1 x broken hand (season)
2 x herniated disc (season)
1 x torn hamstring (he's back this week)
2 x torn calf (not sure on these 2 blokes)
1 x compartment syndrome in lower leg (indefinite)

when you're struggling for numbers, these injuries don't help!

The worst bit is, most of the injured blokes consist of our best in terms of talent, and also most reliable in terms of availability. We have no shortage of available goal umpires, time keepers and umpires escorts!

We will be right this week by the skin of our teeth, and have a couple of new blokes coming down as well.

wow quite a list there Thommo no good... well i hope guys get back on yoru feet in time to play us in a couple weeks i resume runnign tonight and tomorrow night and will train light monday and then rejoin the main group next wednesday in the hope to play at hoem against you guys.

In teh opinion of the guys on this forum that have played a fair bit in this comp waht would you think if the league decided to get rid of the central and north tags and have div 3 and 4 to maybe even out the comp a bit more?

I have long been opposed to teh Northern and Southern Confrences of teh under 18s but not sure how it would work in these league sas i knwo some teams struggle to get guys to travel from beenleigh to robina is one instance form my club.

Just thought id put it out there and see what you guys thought. I don't think the league would do it anyway.

we already have to drive from the gold coast to Brisbane and vice versa so I dont think that anyone would want to travel any further.
In other news looks like Bond may be forking out money (which they ahvent done for afl before) to expand the afl field at the uni (at the moment its about half the size of Robina) so games can be played at the uni

Yeah i see your point i know alot of guys dont like to travel. I have a nambour trip within the next month and that will suck but oh well has to be done.

great news about the ground... I am guessing you guys had holidays thsi week to be so convincenly beaten by jimboomba? How are your numbers looking for if you decide to want to try and push for div 2 next year?

Well i was talking to our Ryan and he said it doesnt look like we will go up even though we are getting our own ground, which is one of the main issues AFLQ had with us going up.
with the numbers im not to sure I really dont think there are enough dedicated guys here atm, unless we get a huge intake of southern guys at the start of next year, which is disappointing, then again if everyone was getting a game maybe they would stay.
We didnt have holidays on the weekend but we still have around 7 guys to come back in, plus the wet and the condition of the ground didnt help our style of play.

Oh ok fair enough

do you guys accept players outside of the uni or is it purely uni students? i know UQ aren't all students but I beleive majority are. Looking forward to watching our teh Div 3 gand final this year though i beleive its at Beenleigh so i will more then likely be workign around teh club.

Redbacks have been wanting to go up for a few years.

In 2009, they were told they would need to win the flag. We then pumped them in both finals.

Then in 2010, they won the flag and were told they needed to provide a list of 50 players to go up to Div 2 by a certain date and couldn't do it. I believe they then lost a bunch of guys who wanted to play Div 2, so will probably stay in Div 3 forever now.

I don't like the idea of there being sides in Div 3 that are clearly better than half the sides in Div 2, but I don't think there is a solution while they maintain the rule that you need to field a seniors and reserves in Div 2. In 2009, Woodsmen and Reddies probably would have contested the Div 2 GF if they were in that comp. Apart from when playing each other, every other game was a non event thrashing and it wasn't much fun for anyone.

oh wow by the sound of that we will never go up,

yeah we accept people from outside the uni.

Most of us are really annoyed that the gf is on the sunday because on the saturday is the last day of semester and the uni has a massive party to celebrate but we wont be able to go now.

The top teams of Div 3 will be competitive in Div 2 but to say that they would have contested the 2009 Div 2 GF is stretching it a bit. Div 2 senior games are played 20 mins + time on and it is a step up in a number of areas, even though maybe by not much. Div 2 tests depths of teams as the season progresses, that is why you need to have a senior and reserves and more. You need an influx of top quality players as well. Both Coomera and Nambour, even though they still have players from their Div 3 days, got a large influx of top quality higher division players which made them very competitive and in Nambour's case, dominating the comp.

Woodsmen 2009 had more than half a dozen players who played in a Pineapple Hotel Cup Premiership in the last 2 years, they were a ridiculously good side to be playing Div 3. Our full forward line had a bloke who kicked 80+ goals in the Western Magpies Senior premiership in 2008, an older bloke who played in several Redland Bombers Senior Premierships and had kicked 100 goals in a season twice, and the most talented of the 3 was another guy who hadn't bothered with any senior footy other than Div 3, but was one of the best U18 players in the state a few years previously.

Having said that, those half a dozen blokes weren't even the best players. One bloke won the League B&F and only played 7 games that season and never trained, the bloke that won the club B&F had never played higher than Div 3 and was a soccer player, yet dominated at CHF.

Apart from Reddies games, the Woodsmen won every game that year by huge margins and quite often fielded a second string team. The in the finals, despite Reddies being undefeated all year, the Woodsmen put their best side out there and beat them by 5 goals in both finals. There was a bloke in the squad then, who wasn't even picked for the finals, that now plays Seniors for the Western Magpies, but couldn't get a game for the Woodsmen 2 years prior...

who is the bloke playing seniors at west maggies now that couldnt make the woodsman squad?

There was talk last weekend of a few Woodsmen heading to watch, but they may have changed now the Western Magpies seniors and reserves play at Sherwood on Sunday.

The GF should be a good game...perhaps not as good as this Div 2 prelim I keep reading about......:)

For mine (and only cause we've played them in the last 2 GF's) the Redbacks will go back to back. I think they've worked Bond Uni out and have the players to nullify Bond's good couple of players (eg #18). Probably too many forward options for Bond to counter against as well.

In all honesty Redbacks probably too good for this league, but until AFLQ allow them to go up or the other clubs improve, there's not too much opposition for them these days.

Was there a Div 3 B&F? If so, who?

Fair enough... yeah Saturday will be a very tense day up at Wynnum if you have read the div 2 forum you would certantly have heard all about it.

I am not sure about a div 3 B&F they would have one but not sure when or where it is presented.

The redbacks only problem is gettign 50 blokes registered i think as thats what you need to play in a higher division

The Div 3 medal I believe was won by Mark Metzling of Bond Uni. From reports it looks like it was announced at the league vote count. As with the previous year, there was no count, just an announcement. Bryce Thomlinson for the redbacks won the goal kicking with 51

Congratulations to Jimboomba for going back-2-back.

Bond never really seems in it. Jimboomba used the wind really well in teh first QTR and bond just never recovered.

AJ are the boys keen for another spin next year?
