Just an idea I wanna put out there.

A State of Origin for AFLTM could work like this:

In Round 20 of the AFL, we start week 1 of our finals series, with the Grand Final coming in Round 23. That leaves 4 weeks of action for the players that aren't participating in the finals.

I would propose that during those 4 weeks we have a Round Robin competition between 4 State of Origin teams (Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and the Allies), with each team playing eachother once in the first three weeks of finals and then a Grand Final between the two best teams as a 'curtain raiser' for the AFLTM Grand Final.

The 4 coaches would be determined by either actual State of Origin eligibility, or even the state/territory their team is in, and it would only be open to coaches who missed the finals.

In terms of player selection, coaches would be able to name a squad of 40 players at the beginning of the tournament that are the only players allowed to be used. In Week 1, only players from clubs that have missed the finals are available, but from each week onwards, players from eliminated finals clubs would become available for selection. Coaches can choose players from finals clubs but run the risk of never being able to use them.

Let me know what you think of the idea.

As with any idea that you or anyone else may have, if it makes sense, has interest from coaches and there is someone willing to run it then I am more than happy for that idea to be put into action. Happy for you or anyone else to run with this one if there is interest from coaches.

Well I definitely won't be playing finals, so I'd be happy to take a team for this!

Perhaps you can have Victoria then? As NT Thunder coach and Darwin resident I'll take the Allies, but if someone else wants them I'm also eligible for South Australia.

What about Vic Metro and Vic Country? I could take Vic Country.

Would probably be more even. Would give us 5 teams though. What fixture could we use?

Just run it a week earlier perhaps. Or have a round where you play two sides.

I just don't want to have it running into the actual season.

Ideally it would have been over the 4 bye rounds but I had the idea too late.

You could just have something like:

VM/NSW-ACT
SA/NT
WA/QLD
VC/TAS

I know that's probably not ideal being the Allies, but it means the SA/NT ties are there, QLD probably the strongest Allied state, so they go to WA, then VC/Tassie, VM/NSW-ACT or something like that.

If I was gonna have 4 teams I would just do Victoria, WA, SA, Allies.

Do a top 5 finals system with the highest non finals coach as 1st place.

Week One

A) 2nd vs 3rd
B) 4th vs 5th
Bye: 1st
Week Two
C) 1st vs A
D) Losers of A vs B
Week Three
E) Losers of C vs D
F) Winners of C and D
Week Four
Grand Final: Winners of E and F

How about we just go with the original 4, and if there's a double up on coaches, then they split games.

Might as well just hand it to the Vics then though. A combined Vic squad should be far too strong for any other state.

That's true I guess. I'll figure something out. Like you said, might have to go into the main season.
