Just dropping these here for us to refer to later in the year.
Academy rivalry aside, it certainly does seem that way. The Lions have a number of great prospects coming through - three Academy members alone with Maggie Harmer leading the way and Mikayla Pauga and Bella Smith there too - so Brisbane should be pretty excited about the draft this year.
From the girls academies, the Lions have a fairly even group. Harmer really impressed me in the All-Stars game last year as I said off half-back, really strong hands, looks like she can slot in anywhere. Pauga is that mid-fwd type who is quite exciting. Showed some great signs last year and has moved to Bond University this year which I presume is doing Uni studies (haven't been able to interview them because of COVID). She played at Maroochydore with both Harmer and Bella Smith (tall key option).

Lucia Liessi is one who is highly rated as a key position player, really strong/stocky body which I hope doesn't play against her because we know sometimes it can, but she's got talent and can play up either end. Christine Okesene is rated highly as an over-ager, had some injuries and is one we have interviewed a couple of years back at the 2019 champs, whilst Phoebe Baird and Abbey Hewett are the other top-agers I'd like to see more of. From a 2004-perspective, Kadie Fletcher made her debut for Aspley on the weekend and impressed named amongst the best, while Charlotte Mullins and Ella Smith are also at Aspley (will be checking that game out), and Brooke Sheridan is usually amongst the best for the Gorillas too.

Not this year, but for the future

Hope she has the same talent

Akermanis earlier this week spoke glowingly about Charlotte after she was picked up by the Lions’ Academy as a future AFLW player — capable of being the club’s first ever father-daughter draft selection at the AFLW draft in years to come.

Would love to see both Maggie Harmer and Bella Smith drafted, both local Noosa girls. When is the draft? Has a date been set yet?

Bella has looked like a gun player from under 12s. She could hold her own against boys even at Under 14 level. It would be great if she got drafted.

Remember Bella doing Athletics at U9 - u10 level, she not only was the fastest girl, she'd also beat all the boys of the same age group.

Did this on Pauga who's in your academy last week, will have a joint one on Harmer and Smith sometime this week as well

Watching two players and counting stars is more difficult hence the less in depth analysis

Thanks for the scouting notes.

For me, the most pleasing thing is that Pauga looks to have very good size and a very strong build, which is something we’re lacking amongst our current midfielders.

She's the shortest of them but super strong through the core so really hard to bring down, although with her uni situation she may try to get to gold coast 🙊

Five New Lions Join The Den

Maroon grown was the draft night theme for the Lions with a Maroochydore trio, a QAFLW Premiership Player and a former professional soccer player joining the reigning AFLW Premiers.

Maggie Harmer, Bella Smith, Mikayla Pauga, Luka Yoshida-Martin, and Lucinda Pullar all joined the Club in the 2021 NAB AFLW Draft.

Sunshine Coasters Harmer, Smith and Pauga will reunite as teammates in the maroon, blue and gold this season, after starting their AFL journey together in the QAFLW at the Maroochydore Football Club.

Joining them is QAFLW Premiership Player, Yoshida-Martin and former Brisbane Roar midfielder, Pullar.

Brisbane Lions Head of Women’s Football Bree Brock says that the ability for the Club to continue to foster Queensland AFLW talent through the Academy and High-Performance Squads is laying the foundation for a strong future.

“We really do believe that the level of Queensland talent is at the level required for AFLW,” Brock said.

“When we started, we had a 10-year plan for the list which included continuous additions from the Academy, and with these four new Academy talents making 13 Academy players overall on our list, that really starts to form a great nucleus, not just for the next ten years, but for the future of the club.

“80% of our listed players are from Queensland, and so to be able to continue to add Queensland talent to the team like we have with these five draft picks this year, it’s really exciting to see.”
