Defender Libby Graham will play her first AFLW game at Manuka Oval on Saturday as she becomes the club’s fifth debutant for the season. Graham is one of three changes for the GIANTS’ crucial clash against the Brisbane Lions on Saturday afternoon. A long-term soccer player, Graham is a rebounding defender and started her AFLW journey with North Shore, before a stint with Macquarie Uni and now finds herself at home with the Manly Warringah Wolves in the AFL Sydney Women’s competition. She chose to give Aussie Rules a go after watching the inaugural AFLW season on TV in 2017. After being a train-on player with the team in 2020, the now 23-year-old was drafted by the GIANTS at pick 42 in last year’s draft.

Graham comes into the side alongside close friend and fellow Wolves defender Lisa Steane and tall forward Aimee Schmidt. Louise Stephenson, Rebecca Privitelli and Tarni Evans have been omitted.

BRISBANE has continued its ominous form against Greater Western Sydney on Saturday, overrunning the Giants by 38 points at Manuka Oval.
GIANTS v LIONS Full match coverage and stats

The Lions struck the first blow early when Tahlia Hickie kicked a nicely weighted ball inside 50 which allowed Davidson to run forward and kick a classy running goal. The Giants had no answers for a relentless Brisbane side that added another five goals to enter the main break 41 points up.

Elle Bennetts had the chance to give GWS the perfect start early in the third term but missed a snap in front of goal. GWS fans were finally given some relief in the third quarter after former Demon Katherine Smith kicked her first goal in Giants colours. Bennetts then added a second goal in the fourth term, but by then the sting was well and truly out of the game.

It was an imposing victory by the Lions but an unhappy return to Canberra for the Giants, who were playing their first game at Manuka Oval in 722 days.

TEAMS: Giants swing massive changes

The revolving door at GWS has continued, with talls Bec Privitelli, Lou Stephenson and Tarni Evans recalled after a week on the sidelines. Jodie Hicks is in for her first game since round two, while Nicola Barr (finger), Aimee Schmidt (ankle), Taylah Davies and Lisa Steane (dropped) make way.

The Giants will be coming up against St Kilda, who have made four changes of their own. Molly McDonald (quad) and Jacqui Vogt (broken pinkie) come back into the side, as does father-daughter signing Alice Burke and ruck Poppy Kelly for her first game this season. The speedy Nat Exon is out with a shoulder knock, while three players – Nadia von Bertouch, Claudia Whitfort and Ali Brown – have been omitted.

Forwards Cora Staunton and Rebecca Privitelli have powered the GIANTS to a 20-point victory over St Kilda in torrential rain at Moorabbin. The GIANTS adapted to the wet conditions better, booting four goals to none in a match-winning first quarter to run out 7.3 (45) to 3.7 (25) winners on Saturday.

Veteran Staunton, who turns 40 this year, and Privitelli were the game changers with three goals each. The Saints worked their way back into the game during the second quarter, but were scoreless after half-time until the dying seconds when Caitlin Greiser slotted a major on the siren. They trailed by less than a goal late in the third quarter before the GIANTS extended the lead back out to 20 points at the final break.

Only one point was kicked to the southern end of the ground for three quarters until Staunton broke Saints hearts with the first and only major of the final term. The result was GIANTS' third win of the season, while the Saints slump to a 2-5 record.

Georgia Patrikios was St Kilda's best with 27 possessions and 10 tackles, while Alice Burke, daughter of Saints legend Nathan, showed some promising signs in her second appearance at the top level.

Alyce Parker was massive again in the wet, with 28 possessions (21 of them kicks), 19 of those contested. She is one impressive young woman, both on and off the field, with her post-game interview very articulate and classy.

Apart from those named, I thought that Tait Mackrill (#32) had an impressive game - with a number of repeat efforts, hard ball wins, and tackling/pressure.

Our academy side thoroughly dismantled Murray Bushrangers in what will be our only NAB League game for the year. Unfortunately didn't get to watch it but there's a few in that side that are usually playing for Murray so might get the opportunity to see them live later on. Was a surprise to be sure, Murray aren't strong but given our lack of experience in the league I thought we'd sturggle

The GIANTS have kept their extremely slim finals hopes alive with a seven-point win over Geelong at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday. Alyce Parker continued her impressive form with 25 disposals, while the GIANTS were also well served by Elle Bennetts and captain Alicia Eva with 18 touches each.

The GIANTS looked to be on top early in the second term after veteran forward Cora Staunton kicked the GIANTS’ second goal of the game. But the rest of the second term was played predominantly on Geelong’s terms, with the Cats applying enormous front-half pressure. However, Geelong failed to take advantage of its 11-3 inside-50 domination that quarter, adding only a solitary point to go into half-time five points down.

The GIANTS started to regain control in the third quarter, but like Geelong were unable to make the most of their opportunities, adding only 0.3 while keeping Geelong scoreless. The fourth quarter was played at a frenetic pace, with Geelong constantly surging the ball inside 50. But a desperate GIANTS side were able to stop Geelong from making any significant impact on the scoreboard, condemning the Cats to their eighth straight loss for the season.

The ladder now

Saturday's win has kept the GIANTS' incredibly faint finals hopes alive, although they would need a host of results to go their way to sneak into the top six. Given its poor percentage of 71.6, GIANTS would need a thumping win against fellow finals aspirant Carlton next week and hope the Bulldogs lose their final two matches. The GIANTS would also need the Demons to lose against Fremantle and Brisbane, but even then Melbourne's impressive percentage (currently 136.4) will likely be too much for the GIANTS to overcome.

Say what?

"We've certainly looked to try and do things and prepare a little bit differently in the last month … because we've historically been up and down. In other days I think we may have lost this game today … so we were very happy with the outcome." - GIANTS coach Alan McConnell

What's next?

The GIANTS will host Carlton at Blacktown International Sportspark for a must-win clash at 4.10pm AEDT next Sunday.

GWS a very, very faint chance of making AFLW finals ... but overall an exciting end to the home & away season:

AFLW LADDER ENTERING ROUND 9 (Eliminated teams excluded)

1. Brisbane Lions (7-1, 218.5%)

2. Collingwood (7-1, 217%)

3. Adelaide Crows (6-2, 210.7%)

4. Fremantle (6-2, 200.6%)

5. Melbourne (6-2, 133.9%)

6. North Melbourne (5-3, 147.3%)

7. Carlton (4-4, 128.1%)

8. Western Bulldogs (4-4, 82.8%)

9. GWS Giants (4-4, 71.6%)

THE RUN HOME (In chronological order)

Friday 5:10pm: Western Bulldogs (8th) v Richmond (10th) - Whitten Oval

The Bulldogs can still sneak into finals in sixth if they win and win big, as long as the Kangaroos lose to Fremantle and Carlton loses to GWS.

However the large gap in percentage means roughly the Dogs would need to win by 10-plus goals while North loses by 10-plus goals.

Saturday 1:10pm: North Melbourne (6th) v Fremantle (4th) - Arden Street Oval

This game is massive, and a win for the visitors would mean GWS v Carlton on Sunday is a live game which could still decide sixth spot.

If the Kangaroos win, they will play finals, and potentially finish as high as third (though fifth is their realistic ceiling, given percentage).

If they lose, they could be passed for sixth (most likely by a victorious Carlton) and miss the finals.

If the Dockers win, they can still finish in the top two - hosting a preliminary final and avoiding the semis in the process.

They need either Brisbane (vs Melbourne) or Collingwood (vs Adelaide) to lose; however if the Crows win, they may stay ahead on percentage and keep the Dockers out of the top two anyway. A big win over North would be ideal. Otherwise they will finish third or fourth.

If the Dockers lose, they could fall to fifth or sixth (depending on their losing margin and if Melbourne wins) and have to travel in week one of the finals.

They will remain fourth and host a semi-final if they avoid a blow-out against North, and Brisbane beats Melbourne; they could even move up to third while losing if Adelaide is belted by Collingwood.

Saturday 3:10pm: Melbourne (5th) v Brisbane Lions (1st) - Casey Fields

Pitting arguably the two form teams of the competition, this game will shape the first week of the finals.

The Demons locked in a finals berth with last week’s win in the west over Fremantle. If they beat Brisbane, they can mathematically make the top two, but the percentage gap makes it extremely unlikely. However they can host a semi-final as long as one of Adelaide (vs Collingwood) or Fremantle (vs North Melbourne) loses.

If the Demons lose, they will finish either fifth or sixth (if North Melbourne wins), and travel for their semi-final.

The Lions can lock up a home preliminary final with a win, and the minor premiership as well if they hold their slender percentage lead over Collingwood (who face Adelaide).

If the Lions lose, they’re at risk of dropping out of the top two, being passed by the Collingwood vs Adelaide winner and Fremantle (if they beat North Melbourne).

Sunday 12:40pm: Adelaide Crows (3rd) v Collingwood (2nd) - Norwood Oval

This is a virtual semi-final, with the winner almost extremely likely to finish in the top two and host a preliminary final.

If the Crows win, they will almost certainly host a preliminary final - assuming by beating the Magpies, they make up the percentage gap of 6.3 between them - and can finish first if Brisbane loses to Melbourne.

If they lose, they could finish fifth and be forced to travel interstate for their semi-final (if Fremantle beats North Melbourne, and Melbourne beats Brisbane). Otherwise they would finish third (if North Melbourne beats Fremantle, and Brisbane beats Melbourne) or fourth (if one of North Melbourne or Brisbane win).

If the Magpies win, they would be certain to finish either second or first (if Brisbane loses, or doesn’t win by as much) and host a prelim.

If they lose, the Magpies could still finish second (if Brisbane loses by more than them), but more likely third (if Fremantle loses to North Melbourne) or fourth (if Fremantle wins). It is extremely unlikely for them to drop to fifth, though mathematically possible.

Sunday 4:10pm: GWS Giants (9th) v Carlton (7th) - Blacktown International Sportspark

If North Melbourne wins on Saturday, this game is a dead rubber. But if Fremantle wins, it could decide the last spot in the top six.

The winner can still pass a Kangaroos side for sixth on percentage, however it is much more likely the Blues (128.1%) do it than the Giants (71.6%).

Heading into the round the Roos’ percentage is 147.3% - easily passable for Carlton if they win by a couple of goals.

To play finals, GWS would need to win by 12-plus goals while North loses by a similar margin.

The GIANTS have made two changes for the final round of the AFLW season with Sarah Halvorsen and Tanya Hetherington returning to the team. Hetherington returns after a month sidelined with an ankle injury while Halvorsen lines up for just her second game of the year following the season opener. Jodie Hicks and Libby Graham make way for the pair.

The GIANTS enter round nine with four wins and four losses, as do Sunday’s opponent Carlton. The Blues hold a far superior percentage having recorded a big win last weekend against Gold Coast.

Probably one of the best games of the AFLW season ... even though they lost, they (and GWS fans) were proud of the jersey!

Carlton finished the NAB AFL Women's season by holding off a determined Greater Western Sydney second-half comeback to record a narrow one-point victory at Blacktown International Sportspark on Sunday. The Blues ran out thrilling 4.8 (32) to 4.7 (31) winners in an entertaining contest in Sydney's west.

It looked like Darcy Vescio and Maddy Prespakis (27 disposals) were going to be the matchwinners when the Blues led by 13 points at half-time, but the Giants also wanted to finish the season on a high and fought hard during a spirited second half. Irishwoman Cora Staunton played a lone hand for the GIANTS up forward during the opening half and could have easily booted more than her two-goal haul had she had kicking boots on, but it was Tait Mackrill (two goals), Alyce Parker (26 disposals) and Rebecca Beeson (26 touches) who were the sparks in the second half.

Rebecca Privitelli and Staunton had chances to win it for the GIANTS as the hosts dominated the final term, but Vescio and Carlton's experienced heads saved the day in the final stages to ensure the visitors held on.

The victory means Carlton finishes an up-and-down season in seventh place and one win outside of the finals, while the GIANTS were a further game adrift in ninth.

Five minutes of madness

It was edge of the seats stuff during the closing stages of this gripping contest as the GIANTS threatened to produce the miracle comeback. The hosts had all the play and the ball was situated inside their 50m arc for much of the final quarter, but there was no way through for the gallant GIANTS. Evergreen veteran Cora Staunton and ball magnet Alyce Parker had a chance to win it late, while Rebecca Privitelli fluffed her lines with a gilt-edged opportunity.

Say what?

"That was a very stressful way to end a season. Winning is better than losing and a winning season is important for us," - Carlton coach Daniel Harford

"It was probably the best half of footy we have played in a lot of ways. I am pleased with the effort, I am pleased with the concentration...I am spewing because we lost," - GWS coach Alan McConnell

Congrats Alyce Parker for your second selection in the AA team - in your third season & by the age of 20. What a gun!

Capture - Alyce AA.PNG

At just 20 years old, Alyce Parker has been named in the AFL Women’s All-Australian Team for a second consecutive season. The final team of 21 was named at this evening’s W awards, hosted across five different locations, with the Sydney based event held at the SCG. In just her third AFLW season, Parker had another standout year in the orange and charcoal. The star midfielder led from the start, a key player for not only the GIANTS but across the entire competition.

GIANTS coach Alan McConnell paid tribute to Parker. “Alyce has once again had an exceptional season,” McConnell said. “In just her third season she’s take yet another step in her development on and off the football field. She’s an incredibly driven footballer and one of her own harshest critics but deserves all the recognition that comes her way as she builds into a fine football career. We’re proud of all of her achievements but to once again be named in the top echelon of players in our competition is a great honour. We’re immensely proud of her as a player and a person and look forward to her continuing to run out in the orange and charcoal for years to come.”

Parker’s 2021 form has also been recognised with selection in the 22under22 AFLPA side while she also finished in second place in the AFLCA player of the year award. Parker is the first two-time All Australian for the GIANTS with captain Alicia Eva, teammates Jessica Dal Pos and Erin McKinnon and former GIANT Courtney Gum all named All Australians over the past years.

The GIANTS will recognise the club’s 2021 AFLW season at the Gabrielle Trainor Medal next Thursday night where Parker is the reigning winner.

Looks like we might lose a couple of key players this trade period:

GWS on-baller Jess Dal Pos received interest from Geelong but is more likely to end up at Carlton. Her reasons for leaving the Giants are more to do with the fact she’s about to finish at paramedics course than anything football related.

The Dogs are also a strong chance to lure Elle Bennetts from GWS, who has a link to coach Nathan Burke through her teaching career in Bayside Melbourne.
