Alan McConnell has been dealt one of his toughest team selections ahead of the GIANTS’ return to action against the Demons on Saturday with almost a full suite of players to select from. The GIANTS last played in round four, recording one of the club’s greatest wins against the Bulldogs without seven regular players due to the AFL’s Health and Safety Protocols and including four club debutants. The round five match-up against the Saints was cancelled, with the GIANTS unable to field a team.

McConnell and the coaching staff have included Chloe Dalton, Katie Loynes, Pepa Randall, Rebecca Privitelli and Haneen Zreika in the round six team.

First-gamers Georgia Fowler, Brodee Mowbray and Casidhe Simmons have all been omitted following the round four win, whilst Erin Lorenzini (omitted) and Lisa Steane (rested) are also out. Tait Mackrill and Georgia Garnett have also not been selected after missing the GIANTS’ last match due to the AFL’s Health and Safety Protocols.

Is this the closest we've had to our Best 21 on the park? Big ask against the Dees, but if we can get through unscathed and not be totally blown away then it'll be a good roll for the rest of the season

Hmm, the less said about that game, the better I think. (Maybe Jess Doyle continuing her run of scoring a goal in the 4th quarter of every game?)

The Giants failed to find any clean ball movement as Melbourne's defence set up strongly behind the ball.

Alyce Parker saw plenty of the ball for the Giants, registering 18 disposals to half-time and finishing the game with 23. Running along alongside the returning Tyla Hanks for much of the game, Parker was strong on the inside, while Hanks was more damaging with her disposal on the outside.

Nicola Barr, the star of the Giants' round four win spent some time up forward again, but with a lack of supply struggled to get involved in the game so was spun back into defence, marking the speedy Alyssa Bannan.

Jess Doyle prevented the Giants from the claiming the unenviable record of lowest score in AFLW history with a goal in the closing stages from a rare inside 50.

Chloe Dalton’s run of bad luck with injury has taken another turn, with the star recruit sustaining a calf strain in the GIANTS’ round six loss to the Demons. Scans confirmed the injury on Monday, ruling her out for at least the next two rounds. After missing out on her second Olympics campaign earlier in the year due to injury, Dalton missed the GIANTS’ round two match with a shoulder injury and round four due to Covid. Dalton will miss Saturday’s clash against the Crows as well as the GIANTS’ postponed round five match against St Kilda, which will now be played on Wednesday, February 23 at Blacktown International Sportspark. :(

Ruck Erin McKinnon will also miss both matches under the AFL’s 12-day concussion protocols after suffering a concussion in Saturday’s clash with the Demons.

Casidhe Simmons will also be ruled out for selection in the two upcoming games after suffering a concussion in the AFLW Summer Series on Saturday.

Tarni Evans has returned to the main training group, participating in some modified training and team drills.

Bec Beeson is continuing her ankle rehabilitation and working through her return to run program.

The GIANTS will name their round seven team on Friday at 5:30pm.

The GIANTS have made four changes for their clash with the Crows this weekend at Henson Park.

Tait Mackrill is one of the four changes, with the medium-forward playing her third game for the season.

Defender’s Erin Lorenzini and Georgia Garnett return to the squad after a week out of the squad, with Lisa Steane also returning after being rested last week.

Chloe Dalton and Erin McKinnon will miss the match due to injury, with Jasmine Grierson omitted and Jess Doyle rested.

All listed players who aren’t on the injury list will play in the second round of the AFLW Summer Series this Sunday at Blacktown International Sportspark.

ADELAIDE has bounced back from last week's shock loss with a comfortable 40-point win over Greater Western Sydney at Henson Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Giants' general play wasn't quite as bad as five points suggest – they attempted to switch lanes and spread the Crows – but their delivery inside 50 was very poor, constantly picking out Adelaide's spare defender.

GWS has now kicked just 1.6 in its last two matches, playing against powerhouses Melbourne and Adelaide and coming off a COVID-19 outbreak that swept through two-thirds of the squad. Saturday's result was the Giants' lowest ever score.

Last Time They Met: It was round seven of 2021 in wet conditions that these two sides last met. The GIANTS got out of the blocks quickly, kicking four goals in the opening quarter. The conditions couldn’t stop forwards Rebecca Privitelli and Cora Staunton, who both went on to kick three goals each at RSEA Park in Melbourne.

Tight tussle this evening against the Saints. Half time score, 2 points difference. Cora & Nicola Barr the GWS goal kickers. Kicking straighter than the opposition helps us (again).
