    2022 AFLW - Round 4 v Western Bulldogs
  • OK, let's get back to the actual footy.

Unfortunately, it would appear there's a COVID outbreak at the Giants, with a few players out due to "AFL Health & Safety Protocols", so several debutants coming in for this game. Plus Haneen out.

Friday night footy will welcome two debutants and a new GIANT when the GIANTS take on the Western Bulldogs and celebrate Pride Round at Henson Park. Casidhe Simmons and Brodee Mowbray will debut for the GIANTS while former Kangaroo Jas Grierson will play her first game for the club.

Also into the side are defenders Louise Stephenson and Libby Graham.

Simmons is a former heptathlete that has brought her athletic abilities across to AFL and has shone playing for UNSW-ES Bulldogs in the AFL Sydney competition. The 26-year-old averaged two goals a game in the local competition and was selected at pick 60 in the most recent Draft.

Mowbray is a tough and speedy midfielder and forward who has a reputation for being a strong tackler and being able to hunt the ball well around the contest. The 19-year-old was one of the best performing players in the AFL Sydney competition in 2021 and was a member of the Allies squad. The GIANTS selected Mowbray at pick 55 in the most recent Draft.

23-year-old Grierson has played 32 games in the AFLW competition since beginning at the Demons for the inaugural season. She spent two seasons at Casey Fields before moving to North Melbourne for their first season in the competition and played 19 games there over the past three seasons. The defender joined the GIANTS ahead of the 2022 season and is playing her first game for the season.

Rebecca Privitelli, Chloe Dalton, Pepa Randall and Katie Loynes will all miss the match due to the AFL’s Health and Safety protocols, while Haneen Zrekia won’t play for personal reasons. Tait Mackrill, who missed the round three match due to suspension, was also unavailable for selection under the AFL’s Health and Safety protocols.

I think it will be a tough night for the first home game of the season.

    2022 AFLW - Round 6 v Melbourne Demons

  • Match Details

    Demons v GIANTS
Saturday, January 12 at 4:10pm (AEDT) Casey Fields

    Tickets

Tickets will be on sale this Thursday from 12pm AEDT.

    Team Selection

The GIANTS will name their final team on Friday at 5:30pm at giants.afl.

Last Time They Met: The last time these two sides met was in the heartbreaking 2020 semi-final. It was the first final series for the GIANTS, with the match played at GIANTS Stadium in front of an empty stadium as the effects of COVID started to impact the world. The GIANTS led by 14 points heading into the final quarter but three goals to the Demons in the final term, the third with 25 seconds remaining, saw the GIANTS’ premiership hopes crushed by a 3-point margin.

What it Means for the GIANTS: The GIANTS sit just outside the top six, one win behind those teams placed fifth to eighth. After having to postpone their round five match due to the AFL’s Health and Safety protocols, the GIANTS will be looking to return to the competition in the same form that saw them record a thrilling victory over the Western Bulldogs.

Where’s the Opposition at: The Dees returned to the winners list in round five, defeating the Gold Coast Suns by 12 points. They currently sit third on the ladder, having dropped just the one game to the Adelaide Crows who are currently the only undefeated team.

The Number: 15 – it will have been 15 days since the GIANTS last took to the footy field for competition points. The GIANTS last played in round four which resulted in a thrilling 21-point win over the Bulldogs at Henson Park.

In the Mix: The GIANTS have now played every fit and available on their 2022 playing list, with 29 players having had their chance to impress Alan McConnell. The GIANTS last played in round four, with Rebecca Privitelli, Chloe Dalton, Katie Loynes, Georgia Garnett, Pepa Randall and Haneen Zrekia all out while Georgie Fowler, Brodee Mowbray, Casidhe Simmons and Jas Grierson debuted in the team’s impressive performance.

TV & Online: The match will be broadcast live from 4pm(AEDT) on 7Mate as well as Foxtel, Kayo and the Official AFLW App.

    2022 AFLW - Round 7 v Adelaide Crows

  • The GIANTS have made four changes for their clash with the Crows this weekend at Henson Park.

Tait Mackrill is one of the four changes, with the medium-forward playing her third game for the season.

Defender’s Erin Lorenzini and Georgia Garnett return to the squad after a week out of the squad, with Lisa Steane also returning after being rested last week.

Chloe Dalton and Erin McKinnon will miss the match due to injury, with Jasmine Grierson omitted and Jess Doyle rested.

All listed players who aren’t on the injury list will play in the second round of the AFLW Summer Series this Sunday at Blacktown International Sportspark.

    2022 AFLW - Round 8 v Carlton

  • Star midfielder Rebecca Beeson will play her first game since round two as she makes her return to the GIANTS side for the AFLW clash against Carlton at Manuka Oval on Sunday night. Beeson is one of three changes for the crucial clash with ruck Erin McKinnon and young forward Brodee Mowbray returning to the side.

Beeson – the 2019 Gabrielle Trainor Medal winner – hasn’t played since injuring her ankle in round two against the Fremantle Dockers.
McKinnon returns to the line-up after missing the past two matches through the AFL’s concussion protocols.

Mowbray will play her second game of the season after making her debut against the Western Bulldogs at Henson Park in round four. The 19-year-old is a tough and speedy midfielder and forward who has a reputation for being a strong tackler and being able to hunt the ball well around the contest

Young ruck Ally Morphett has been rested for the GIANTS’ third game in eight days, while fellow youngster Jess Doyle and defender Jasmine Grierson have been omitted.

The round eight clash will see the GIANTS continue the competition-wide celebrations for Indigenous Round, acknowledging the significant contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to Australian Football and the broader community. The GIANTS will once again run out in their specially-designed Indigenous jumper, created by Wiradjuri woman Leeanne Hunter.

The GIANTS’ AFLW side return to the nation’s capital on Sunday night to take on the Blues with the match to start at 7:10pm. Tickets are available via Ticketek.

    2022 AFLW - Round 9 v Richmond Tigers

  • Tarni Evans will play her first game for season 2022 when the GIANTS run out at GIANTS Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Evans debuted last season for the GIANTS and played seven of the nine regular-season matches. However, a foot injury in the early weeks of pre-season has sidelined the 20-year-old to date. Standing at 180cm, Evans is a versatile utility who has the ability to make an impact all across the ground.

Also returning to the side after an injury-riddled first year in the orange and charcoal is Chloe Dalton. Dalton sustained a calf strain in the round six loss to the Crows, forcing her to miss the past two matches.

Forwards Rebecca Privitelli and Jess Doyle have also been recalled, with Katherine Smith, Lou Stephenson, Erin Lorenzini and Brodee Mowbray omitted.

Saturday’s clash against the Tigers at GIANTS Stadium is just the second time the women’s side have played at the Sydney Olympic Park venue.

Tickets for Saturday’s match are available through Ticketmaster.

    2022 AFLW - Round 10 v Geelong
  • Deckchairs being reshuffled, but Chloe Dalton and Alyce Parker missing is a huge concern for us.

Not a particularly good season from us, all over after tonight at Geelong.

The GIANTS will enter their final game of the season without star midfielders Alyce Parker and Chloe Dalton. Parker was forced out of Friday night’s match after suffering a concussion in the GIANTS’ round nine nail-biter against the Tigers, while Chloe Dalton was dealt a one-week suspension from the same match.

Katherine Smith and Casidhe Simmons have both been added to the side to take on the Cats. Smith has played eight of the GIANTS’ games so far this season, including kicking the match-winning goal against the Saints in the rescheduled round five match at Blacktown International Sportspark.

Simmons was one of three club debutants in round four, when the GIANTS recorded their best win of the season, defeating the Bulldogs by 21 points. The former heptathlete will be expected to add some speed into the GIANTS’ forward line for Friday’s match.

The match between the Cats and the GIANTS will be broadcast live from 6pm on 7Mate in NSW and the ACT, Foxtel, Kayo and the Official AFLW App.

Both sides suffered disappointing losses last week, Geelong because it didn't make the most of the opportunities it created and the Giants due to a slow start. Geelong struggled around the contest against the Saints, and despite coming up against a Giants side that will be without Alyce Parker, it doesn't get any easier this week. Rebecca Beeson is finding some impressive form after an ankle injury saw her miss five games this year, while captain Alicia Eva and first year player Ally Dallaway have shown a real strength at stoppages this year.

It will be important for the Giants to find a spread of goalkickers, rather than rely heavily on Cora Staunton for the bulk of their score. Staunton almost pulled them over the line with three final-quarter goals against the Tigers on Saturday, but if they can force Geelong's defence to play accountable footy across a number of dangerous forwards, they will be in a good position to finish the 2022 season on a high.

Good luck ladies, bring it home with a bang against the Cats.

TV & Online: The match will be broadcast live from 3:00pm on 7Mate in NSW and ACT, as well as Foxtel, Kayo and the Official AFLW App.

Last Time They Met: It won’t be the first time that the Lions have travelled to Manuka Oval with the two teams last meeting in the nation’s capital in round six, 2021. It was a dominant display by the 2021 premiers who looked in control from the start. The GIANTS didn’t get a major until the third quarter, but it was a memorable moment with the six points marking the first goal for Katherine Smith in the orange and charcoal.

Player watch: Cambridge McCormick – after losing Fleur Davies to injury on the eve of the season, the number one ruck role suits entirely with the new draftee, with support from Brid Stack and replacement player Grace Hill. McCormick made her debut in last week’s round one clash with the Bulldogs, recording 18 hit outs, nine disposals and two marks. McCormick will be in familiar territory this week as the former Lions train-on player returns to Canberra where she has spent the past two seasons playing in the AFL Canberra Women’s competition.

In the Mix: With no new additions to the GIANTS’ injury list and a promising start from the new-look team and new-look game plan, it’s hard to predict what/if changes new Head Coach Cam Bernasconi will make. Just four players are currently available for selection to play their first game of season 2022.

    AFLW S7 Rd 6 v Carlton

  • The GIANTS have made two changes ahead of a critical clash with Carlton on Saturday afternoon.

Georgia Garnett will return to the squad while Grace Hill will make her AFLW debut. Hill signed with the GIANTS on the eve of round one as a replacement player for second round pick Fleur Davies.

The 24-year-old is relatively new to the game, joining the UTS Bats in the AFL Sydney Women’s competition in 2019. She has been a part of the GIANTS’ train on program since May this year and has thrived in the elite training environment. The netball cross-coder is naturally athletic and is expected to bring power and work rate in the backline this weekend.

Georgia Garnett has been cleared to play following her hamstring injury last week, with the pair set to replace Georgie Fowler and Meghan Gaffney who have been omitted.

Saturday’s match is the first home game at Henson Park for season seven.

    AFLW S7 Rd 7 v Collingwood

  • The GIANTS have made one change ahead of this weekend’s clash with Collingwood with Brid Stack returning to the squad.

Stack missed last weekend’s win over Carlton due to a calf injury but has passed her fitness testing this week in order to be cleared for selection.
The inclusion of the Irish defender will bolster the GIANTS in a bid to make it back-to-back wins for the first time this season. The GIANTS come off a 17-point win over the Blues, while Collingwood only just held onto victory last week with a narrow two-point win over St Kilda. Stack is the only inclusion for the GIANTS, with young forward Jess Doyle omitted.

The match between the Pies and the GIANTS will close out round seven on Sunday afternoon, with the first bounce getting underway at 5:10pm.

Collingwood v Greater Western Sydney at Victoria Park, 5.10pm AEDT

These are two inaugural sides who have only played one another three times since the competition began, and have not met since round four, 2019. Greater Western Sydney boasts two wins to the Pies' one as they prepare to meet for the fourth time. This season, Collingwood's forward pressure has been immense, averaging 16.4 tackles inside 50 thanks to players like Eliza James and Chloe Molloy, but have let themselves down with poor accuracy at goal. Against a Giants defence that is without Pepa Randall, however, Collingwood will be looking to really take advantage.

GWS is averaging just 20.2 clearances this season, 4.5 of which are Alyce Parker's, which presents as an opportunity for the emerging midfield group of Mikala Cann, Molloy and Tarni Brown to really get a handle on the Giants in the middle. Quick, fast clearances that catch the Giants' defenders one-on-one will spell danger for the visitors just as they are trying to get back on their feet.

  • Another injury disaster for our team!

Youngsters Jess Doyle and Meghan Gaffney will return to the team as the GIANTS look to make it back-to-back wins at Henson Park. Doyle was omitted from last week’s team, while Gaffney returns to the side for her fourth game of the season.

Scans this week have confirmed an ACL rupture for Emily Pease, with the round six rising star set to miss the remainder of the season. GIANTS Coach Cam Bernasconi said: “It’s really disappointing news for Emily, who hurt her knee at training this week. She’s been having a wonderful season and we’re going to miss having her out there for the rest of this year. We’ll support Em in every way and we know this is just a minor setback in what will be a long and successful AFLW career.”

Pease will see a surgeon on Monday and begin her rehabilitation.

Haneen Zreika will miss this weekend’s match due to personal reasons but will be available for selection next week.

The GIANTS take on Hawthorn this Sunday at Henson Park, with the match beginning at 3:10pm.

  • The GIANTS have made one change for their tussle with the Tigers in Mildura on Sunday.

Haneen Zreika will return for the round nine match following being unavailable for selection last week. Zreika will replace Grace Hill who has been omitted following three games in the orange and charcoal.

The GIANTS will be looking to secure back-to-back wins for the first time on Sunday. However, it won’t come easy as the in-form Tigers will be looking to make it seven straight wins and secure their spot in the top four. The match will be played at Mildura Sporting Precinct and it will be the first time the venue has hosted an AFLW match for competition points.

The match will get underway at 3:10pm and will be live and free on 7Mate from 3:00pm.

  • It’s a fairy-tale finish to season seven for Tess Cattle who will make her AFLW debut in round 10 on Sunday afternoon.

Cattle is a graduate of the GIANTS Academy, with the 18-year-old selected at pick 86 in the 2022 NAB AFLW Draft in June this year. The Canberran is a contested ball winner and whilst she has been training in the backline, has the versatility to play all across the ground.

“Tess has been working really hard so it’s really pleasing to be able to reward her with a game and debut this weekend,” said Cam Bernasconi. “She’s another piece to the puzzle of the exciting future that this club has and another exciting young talent. I look forward to seeing what she can add to the group this weekend.”

Cattle is the only change for the GIANTS, replacing Jess Doyle who has been omitted for the final game of the season.

While Sunday’s match will be game one for Cattle, it will mark veteran Cora Staunton’s 50th AFLW game. Staunton becomes just the second player at the GIANTS to reach the milestone and has played 50 consecutive matches.

The GIANTS will host the Gold Coast Suns at Henson Park on Sunday at 5:10pm and to celebrate the end of the GIANTS’ season, entry is FREE for all patrons.
