According to the club

Were looking forward to some exciting new talent to join the club across the upcoming period.“We’re working really hard behind the scenes with our new Head Coach Cam Bernasconi on what the future of our club looks like for this season and beyond.
“We knew we’d be farewelling some familiar faces but equally are excited by the opportunities for our younger and emerging players as we enter our seventh season.”

GIANTS Head of Women’s Football Briana Harvey welcomed Izzy to the club. “We’re really excited to welcome Izzy to the GIANTS for the next two seasons,” said Harvey. “Izzy is a versatile player and brings not only great talent, but great leadership through her experience in the game. She’s coming off an ACL injury but her rehabilitation is going really well and she’ll be in good hands with our medical staff here to ensure she returns to the track as soon as possible. She’s excited to continue her career with us and her commitment is a great endorsement for our club and for our people.”

rehabilitation is going really well and she’ll be in good hands with our medical staff - oh oh!

Some interesting decisions being made from a few of the girls in their zone selections and if we end up with both Goldsworthy and Davies we will have done extremely well:

Sydney has the first five picks in the NSW portion and has already committed to Montana Ham, Sofia Hurley, Cynthia Hamilton, Alice Mitchell and Montana Beruldsen, opening the door for Greater Western Sydney to select Goldsworthy.

A taller outside player, Hamilton is from Wagga Wagga and will make the move south if drafted.

The Giants also look set to take Tasmanian Madison Brazendale and Gold Coast Academy ruck Fleur Davies, with the pair also nominating New South Wales.

So, AFLW draft upcoming on 29th June.

Our team's been gutted, but Sydney expend all of their picks before GWS get their first, needing 8 to fill all the holes in our list. Way to go AFL in ******* us over.

GWS: 20, 64, 66, 75, 82, 84, 86, 87

The order is a bit of a nonsense as we can only choose from the NSW pool, and the top 5 from the pool will all go to Sydney.

New South Wales
1. (1 overall) Sydney – cannot be traded
2. (5) Sydney – cannot be traded
3. (11) Sydney – cannot be traded
4. (12) Sydney – cannot be traded
5. (13) Sydney – cannot be traded
6. (20) GWS
7. (64) GWS
8. (66) GWS
9. (75) GWS
10. (82) GWS
11. (84) GWS
12. (86) GWS
13. (87) GWS

Actually 2 of he Swans 5 selections are locked into two local girls who they signed prior to the draft but since they haven't nominated for the draft in previous years means that they have to draft them in this draft. So the more highly rated Goldsworthy and Davies are likely to fall our way.

So looks like the Swans will take: Ham, Hurley, Hamilton,Mitchell,Beruldsen.

While it looks we will take Goldsworthy and Davies who are both true first round talents with our first 2 picks and then a couple of Tassie girls, but after that who knows.

AFLW DRAFT PICKS: 20, 68, 70, 88 | NSW/ACT DRAFT POOL: 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11,12, 13

GWS lost a chunk of experience over the off-season, with rucks Erin McKinnon (St Kilda) and Ally Morphett (Sydney) leaving the GIANTS’ tall stocks thin. Rebecca Privitelli and Lisa Steane both crossed to the Swans with Morphett, while Louise Stephenson (Hawthorn) and Libby Graham (Richmond) also departed. With veterans Katie Loynes and Erin Lorenzini retiring, the GIANTS needed to pick up some fresh faces. The biggest recruit was that of Western Bulldogs star and former number one pick Isabel Huntington. The key forward will sit out Season 7 recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, but will be worth the wait for the 2023 season.

FIRST PICK:

Entering the AFL Women’s Draft with Pick 6 in the least developed region is tough.
The Swans will pick the eyes out of the best NSW-ACT pool, including taking one of the GIANTS’ top Academy talents in the Cynthia Hamilton which will leave the GIANTS looking to get creative. But get creative they did, working hard to convince Gold Coast Academy tall Fleur Davies her future is in orange and charcoal, getting the AFLW Academy ruck-forward to nominate NSW-ACT. Late in the piece, incredible midfielder-forward Zarlie Goldsworthy announced she would choose the NSW-ACT zone and is expected to get through to the GIANTS.

OTHER SELECTIONS:

It is difficult to know which way the GIANTS go with their draft hand given they are handicapped by what the Swans do. They might look for the likes of Swans Academy mature-ager Jemima Wrigley who is a readymade midfield option. There is also Eleanor Bishop or Tess Cattle out of Ainslie, who fall into the GWS Academy zone. Likewise, Teagan Germech is another mature-age Academy prospect playing AFL Canberra for Belconnen. Internally, Jessica Whelan has been a train-on player for the GIANTS and no doubt the coaching staff know what she offers by now. Otherwise the GIANTS might look to state leagues to pick up a gem, with Tarnica Golisano one who had a game in AFL Canberra during a bye week for Subiaco. The West Australian would be a shrewd choice for the GIANTS, as would Amelia Radford or Sophia McCarthy out of the VFLW.

Basically, GWS will call out Zarlie Goldsworthy (mid) and Fleur Davies (ruck/forward - Qld) with the first two selections, who are decent players. Then, I'd expect we'll select Madi Brazendale (winger - Tas) somewhere in the next 6 selections. The others become guesswork, depending on exactly what holes the team needs to fill. NSW list names not mentioned above (as far as I'm aware - it's all a bit messy) include Dakota Mason and Asha Turner Funk, both from the Swans' academy.

A mature ruck seems a non-negotiable requirement.

I'd hope we do take Mason, low possession but smooth mover sort of player that could develop well given some top level training. Overall considering what our expected draft selections were about two weeks ago it's a great spot to be in currently, Goldsworthy could very well be a starting midfielder for us come Round 1 and I'd expect Davies to have a bigger impact as a ruck than Morphett did for us if given the opportunity. Brazendale is an interesting one that we've clearly targetted, she was one I liked in her draft year last year and has some similarities to Mason in her evasiveness, and does fill what is a HUGE need imo for Outside Midfielders

As good of a draft as it will be for us in terms of those first couple of selections, i could very well see us as spooners next year unfortunately, if that does happen I hope we follow the lead of Gold Coast and Sydney and put in some work to convince top prospects from elsewhere to nominate NSW, Alyssia Pisano from Eastern Ranges is exactly the sort of forward we need for example
