It's a big start for Melbourne, opposite to previous years. This time 3 of their first 4 games come against top-end opposition, while they finish with games against the Dogs, Suns, Bombers and Eagles.

Compare that to the run home of their last few seasons: Brisbane, North and Freo in the last month of season six; Adelaide, Freo and Brisbane in the last 3 weeks of 2021. Consequently had a pretty soft fixture at the beginning of those campaigns.

If they don't come out the gate firing now (need to beat at least two of the Crows, Roos & Lions in the first month), they won't be able to make up the ground due to a lack of 8-point games down the stretch.

my only worry with Melbourne is have they got enough midfield rotations to trouble Adelaide (probably Brisbane as well)
most were shown up in the recent GF, have they the fire power to rectify this in season 7 ?

the AFLW is still very midfield dominant, who wins generally wins the game, fwd and backlines being even
not sure Mithen, Hanks, Paxman, Purcell, West will be enough at the pointy end of the season

Zanker can go onball too. More than enough talent in that midfield. A couple of them just need to harden up a bit.

The rest of them have a voice but nothing to say, which even the commentators pointed out on Thursday night after a couple of cliche-laden interviews with Collingwood players.

Something far too familiar about Lauren Pearce doing something good (takes a grab 10m out), immediately following it up with something really dumb (kicking straight into the player on the mark), and then have Daisy swoop in and clean up the mess (kicking the goal at a pivotal stage).

Carrying teams for 15+ years: the old school way of getting your name out there. Much better than the Libby Birch method of overexposure.

it would have been nice if Melbourne had the chance to win that legitimately

holy * could the umpiring have been any more lopsided and horrendous?
They won it fair and square, as expected. Poor form to claim otherwise.

Just as it would be poor form to claim the Crows are only reigning premiers due to having SA all to themselves.

What was your honest assessment of the umpiring?
Melbourne were cleaner and Crows too rushed but the umps made sure of it
The worst-ever umpired AFLW game remains R4 2017 at Casey Fields, when Carlton were gifted ridiculous free kicks in front of goal all day (nevertheless Melbourne won... narrowly, despite absolutely dominating the contest).

Last night's umpiring doesn't even register on that scale. Nor was it anywhere near as bad as Hatchard's kicking last night.

It would be nice if Crows supporters could follow the lead of their coach and show some class in defeat. Don't have to dive into the excuse bag Starcevich-style after a rare loss.

Melbourne were way cleaner with their ball movement and Adelaide seemed like they drank a carton of red bull and played on at all costs to their detriment

The umpiring though made it unwatchable
