GIANTS Dominate Swans for Big Win

The GIANTS have won the first ever NAB AFLW Sydney Derby at the SCG.

The GIANTS have firmly established themselves as the big sister of the AFLW Sydney Derby, piling on the goals to defeat the Swans by 47 points at the SCG. In the first AFLW battle between the New South Wales teams, the seventh-season GIANTS spread the first-season Swans too thin in the 9.11 (65) to 2.6 (18) victory, recording their highest score in the process (previously 56 against Richmond in 2020).

The GIANTS' revamped gameplan under new coach Cam Bernasconi finally clicked into gear, burning the Swans on the outside and running hard for each other to create an overlap in attack, while also finding some patience for the occasional slow play. Fittingly, it was the inaugural AFLW No.1 pick Nicola Barr – a childhood Swan now a GIANT, through and through – who slotted the opening major after both sides had peppered the goals to no avail. GIANTS defender-turned-forward Georgia Garnett's stunning set shot from a tight angle took the margin to 25 at half-time, which followed Lexi Hamilton breaking through for the Swans' first.

The rain briefly came in the third term, but it didn't put off former Young Matilda Zarlie Goldsworthy, the bullocking GIANTS debutant slotting a classy goal on the run and kicking two for the game. Ally Morphett (18 hitouts, 13 disposals, five clearances) and Kate Reynolds were dominant in the ruck against Cambridge McCormick, but Alyce Parker (22 touches) and Emily Pease (16) helped the GIANTS balance out the clearance count with five apiece.

GIANT replacements stand up

The GIANTS' injury headaches have entered yet another season, losing three key players to long-term issues last weekend. In the absence of Tait Mackrill (foot) and Chloe Dalton (hamstring), Ally Dallaway and Emily Pease spent more minutes in the middle, with debutant Meghan Gaffney rotating on the wing alongside Alicia Eva and Maddy Brazendale. Annalyse Lister – who played on the wing against Brisbane last week – slotted into a more traditional defensive role to cover for Pepa Randall (ACL).

Welcome back Nicola Barr​

Nicola Barr returned from a knee injury yesterday and made her presence felt in the match. She provided that leadership on the field and had an impact on the match, finishing with 15 disposals, two marks, one tackle and two goals.


Youth of Giants making most of opportunities

Whilst it was a tough week for the Giants with a couple more injuries added to the list, the Giants youngsters stepped up in the Derby, making the most of their opportunities and playing with confidence. Meghan Gaffney, Madison Brazendale and Zarlie Goldsworthy made their impact, bringing plenty of energy to the team and gave the Giants confidence. Goldsworthy on debut was particularly impressive, finishing with the nine touches but did lay four tackles and put two majors on the board.

The latest news on the GIANTS' AFLW injury list ahead of round four.

Geez, the carnage continues ... (read past the headline!)

The GIANTS have added no new additions to their injury list following their round three win over the Swans on Saturday at the SCG.

It was confirmed that Cora Staunton played last weekend’s match with a fractured nose, but the 40-yer-old underwent surgery on Monday and will be cleared to play by the end of the week.

Rebecca Beeson and Casidhe Simmons will formerly move to the club’s inactive list, after specialist opinions have deemed them unfit to return this season. Extra precautions have been taken with pair due to suffering multiple concussions in the past 6-12 months and will continue to be managed by the GIANTS medical team in order for them to return to full activity.

Fleur Davies received surgery on Monday to repair her shoulder injury and will begin her 6-month rehabilitation program over the coming weeks.

Milestone

If selected, captain Alicia Eva will play in her 50th AFLW game on Sunday afternoon.

Eva started her career in Melbourne with Collingwood, playing seven games for the Pies in the inaugural season, before making the move to Sydney ahead of season two.

Fowler in for Round Five

Fowler returns to the squad for the round five match at Unley Oval.

The GIANTS have made one change heading into the round five clash with the Crows, with young forward Georgie Fowler returning to the side.

The 18-year-old made her AFLW debut in round four of season six, part of the club's first-ever game at Henson Park and convincing against the odds win over the Bulldogs. Fowler was a part of the opening round clash earlier this season and returns to the side for her second game of the season. The young forward comes into the side for Georgia Garnett, who will miss the game due to a hamstring injury.

Sunday's match will be one for milestones with captain Alicia Eva set to bring up her 50th career game, while former dual sportswomen Jodie Hicks will bring up game number 25.

That's a real debacle, I know NSW football isn't the strongest but a foundation club losing 97-1 is seriously stuffed.

Yup. Haven't watched it yet but Adelaide, while very talented, aren't 97 times better than us. But they have had the same coach for 4 seasons and while he was new to women's footy originally, it clearly clicked for him. Bernasconi... not so sure. But he did also have a very short turnaround from last season, and our injury list is painful to read.

It doesn't mean anything for the integrity of the league overall though, and there have been plenty of good games to watch this year. The one where we thumped the Swans was fun, for starters

A limited league wouldn't get the same long term growth in girls playing, viewership and therefore funding etc. It just wouldn't necessarily lead to the higher quality that you'd expect, in my opinion. And definitely not the popularity. The brutally honest truth is that a shitty Swans AFLW team is going to continue to attract more fans than even a high quality GWS AFLW team would. So they had to bring Swans in. Same goes for Essendon, Hawks... big membership clubs. Maybe it would have worked out better if they'd had those clubs making up an original smaller AFLW, but having the clubs volunteer/apply made sense too, to make sure it was located at supportive clubs. So they are in a historical bind, but expansion to 18 is not the problem IMO.
