A very disappointing game. We started OK, but were well beaten. Not being able to kick straight certainly didn't help. Nor was losing Alyce Parker at half time.

It's going to be a long season for our ladies, I'm afraid.

But the Giants lost the lead through their wastefulness, trailing by two points at quarter-time. Tarni Evans was on-song early for the home side and could have finished with more than the opening goal after taking three inside-50 marks in the first quarter. GWS young gun Zarlie Goldsworthy had uncharacteristically sprayed her set shot from the top of the goalsquare. Evans again flaunted her aerial prowess just before the main break, but could not shake the yips, netting just two points from two set shots.

Parker was leading the Giants with 15 disposals and five clearances before an ankle injury forced her out at half-time.

Parker got injured and it went to shit.
We keep assuming Bernasconi will get the chop, maybe this year.
Thought that last year ... and the year before.

He must be a good guy, but not a good coach. I guess it must be hard to entice someone to Sydney ... hard enough for the men's team, let alone the women's team.

Goodwin would be an interesting choice if as rumours suggest he is interested in joining us. Will also show that we take AFLW seriously by having someone of his calibre coaching our ladies side. But I think if Goodwin joins us, it will be as an interim senior assistant to Kingsley prior to Goodwin’s inevitable movement as a head coach to another AFL team when a vacancy comes up.

Crowd at Manuka for the Essendon AFLW match on Saturday was 2,258. Highest AFLW crowd since the September 2022 AFLW game against Brisbane which drew a slightly higher crowd of 2,342.

Also I know its early to talk draft(if we continue to suck), but rookieme has 3 suns academy girls in top 4, with Chloe Bown MID the non academy, if we cant get G.Davies (GC) (fleurs sister) 185 ruck/mid or T.Baron (GC) 179 KF, maybe O.Wolmarans (WA) 180 KF is the best option to pair with Garnett and Evans, Usher would be a dream but her injury issues is a concern

Former Crow Taylah Levy will make her club debut for the GIANTS when the team travels to Melbourne to face the Magpies in round two.

The college basketball star-cum-footballer played 16 matches with Adelaide across two seasons before making the switch to Western Sydney in the 2024 trade period.

Levy brings crucial experience to the young GIANTS side, with the ability to play both in the midfield and up front and will be an important asset in both areas, with Alyce Parker unavailable through injury.

Her work rate around contest and on the ball are both areas of focus for the GIANTS ahead of their clash with the Magpies.

The looming concern for the Giants coming into their round two match is how they cover the loss of Alyce Parker, not just this week but for the whole season. Against a Collingwood midfield that does boast the likes of Ruby Schleicher and Brit Bonnici, it is Bec Beeson, Mikayla Pauga and Kaitlyn Srhoj who will have to carry the load, while Zarlie Goldsworthy – who was initially slated for more time forward – will come into the contest, and recruit Taylah Levy may also make her Giants debut. Irishwoman Eilish O'Dowd may also earn a run as a midfielder, rather than solely a ruck, to offer a point of difference in the line.

At half time our ladies holding on 18 (3.0) vs an inaccurate Collingwood 12 (1.6). Hopefully we can hang on and have our first AFLW win since 31 August 2024.

Despite leading for most of the game and at each of the quarter time breaks, our AFLW team unfortunately lost 25-33 in a close game. We were held scoreless in the last quarter, whilst Collingwood the 2024 wooden spooners scored 13 points. Tarni Evans scored 3 goals. We will be playing traditional AFLW powerhouse Adelaide at Henson Park next week.

At the end of the season the dream is.
Sack Cam
Trade and persuade the 1st Rounder, for a contested ball winner, Ellie McKenzie, Charlie Rowbottom, Abbey Dowrick (even throw in the future 1st to get it done)
Selected or match bid on Isla Wiencke (late first or 2nd)
Sign Prosser-Shaw shes done great for Box Hill VFLW
Sign Nyakoat Doijok (39 Goals VFLW leader goal kicker, next woman has 19)

2 games in, 2 players gone for their season.

Young defender Caitlin Fletcher has been ruled out for the remainder of the AFLW season after scans over the weekend confirmed she had sustained a hip injury. The newcomer, who debuted in round one, was ruled out late from the GIANTS’ loss to the Magpies, after experiencing hip soreness on Friday. Scans have confirmed a bone stress injury, which will make her unavailable for at least three months.

The GIANTS managed to return from Melbourne with only minor incidents, despite several players coming off the field through the match, including Brodee Mowbray who was cleared of any issues after being involved in a head clash while taking a courageous mark.

Grace Kos is a test to play, after coming from the field with a knee complaint in the first quarter but returning to play out the game. The Irish recruit was later confirmed to have sustained a low grade MCL injury and will be monitored at training throughout the week.

Fletcher’s news comes in the same week that Daisy Walker returned to football for the first time in almost two years, successfully returning to contention for AFLW selection this week via scrimmage.

Former Sun Viv Saad will also be available for selection this weekend, having commenced full training with the team last week.

The GIANTS return home for their first match at Henson Park this season on Saturday at 1:05pm, taking on Kuwarna (Adelaide) in round three, the first of two weeks celebrating Indigenous Round.

The GIANTS will name their team to face the Crows at gwsgiants.com.au, 6:20pm on Thursday.

Former Blue Daisy Walker will make her GIANTS debut against Kuwarna (Crows) this weekend. Walker headlines two inclusions for the team to take on Kuwarna in round three, the GIANTS’ first match at their Sydney home of Henson Park for 2025.

The former Blues defender joined the GIANTS in 2023, after 31-games at Carlton before she sustained an ACL injury that ruled her out of the team’s 2024 campaign. A versatile and hard-working defender that can slingshot the team forward with her agility and pace, Walker has showed immense resilience and dedication in her efforts to return to AFLW-level football and has been rewarded with selection after a strong showing at scrimmage level.

Walker joins Jess Doyle in her return to the side, after a minor stress fracture in the pre-season delayed her preparations for the 2025 season. Doyle adds speed and pressure play to the GIANTS’ team, an important asset against a Kuwarna side who prefer to muscle the ball out of contests and a run-and-carry movement.

Irish recruit Grace Kos was unable to complete training through the week, following a minor strain in her knee during the round two loss to the Magpies.

The GIANTS will meet Kuwarna on Saturday for their first match in Sydney for 2025, at 1:05pm at Henson Park, Sydney – Gadigal Country.
