SELECTION: AFL Women's Draft, pick 48.
STATE: NSW.
CLUB: Sydney University
HEIGHT: 189 cm
POSITION: Ruck
NICKNAME: Ez

17-year-old Erin McKinnon fell in love with AFL when her brother started playing Auskick. McKinnon wanted to play too and was told that due to a lack of numbers, she would have to arrange enough players to make a team. Her local club, the Mosman Swans, supported them by supplying uniforms. McKinnon has gone on to be named in the All-Stars team following the National Youth Girls championships.

GWS Giants player Erin McKinnon earned the honour of being a member of their inaugural squad the day before she sat her first HSC exam.

She didn’t let that distraction derail her studies though, as the ruck player received an ATAR of 94.15 on Friday.

McKinnon, who will study exercise science at Sydney University on a sports scholarship, said she found her busy football schedule this year helped her studies rather than hindered them.....

Love the players voice articles, this one is particularly laid bare..

This article first appeared on PlayersVoice titled: Ups and Downs.

I was super-humbled to be named All Australian ruckman last season. But then I almost wished it had never happened. The extra bucketload of pressure I put on myself was ridiculous.

I was already dealing with mild depression and anxiety, and then to have that thrown on top amplified everything. I was overwhelmed. I naturally put lots of pressure on myself anyway and it started to spiral out of control.

I was thinking irrationally. I was like ‘Now I’ve got to be the best this season. If I don’t get All Australian again then I’ve failed. And, if I’m the best, I have to win every single hit out’.

Which is impractical. It’s impossible. Brodie Grundy and Max Gawn don’t win every single hit out but they’re still the AFL’s best ruckmen.
