Really hope she's still available for our first, even if she stays for a year or two until Essendon get their team she would be perfect to help out Ellie and Kirsty while our younger mids develop.
Georgia is 29 right? Do you really expect her to be taken so early?
Surely she'd be available at our last pick?

There is talk that she could go round 1 and bassed off her VFLW season you can see why. Midfield depth is hard to come by at the moment, I hope you're right of course but I've got a feeling that she might already be gone by our first pick.

I have seen Zali Friswell up close and believe she would be a good choice.

She uses the ball very well and has good strength.

She didn't really get an opportunity for Vic Metro in the midfield.

I hope she is available when it comes to our picks

Unfortunately Geelong took her with pick 7

Oh man we got Amanda Ling! Thought she'd be long gone by our pick.
Yeah wrapped with Amanda and Aurora. Both expected to go higher by draft watchers and will bolster our midfield.
Interesting that we weren't interested in Gillard. No real back up ruck on our list if Moody goes down.

You are obviously an astute judge of talent MYOB. None of the draft watchers had her anywhere near the first round.

Gamble is the next tallest on our list (180cm), so I'm guessing she's being viewed as the replacement. It's certainly a strategy of the club that lives up to her name.

Yeah I think Katie Lynch came to us as a ruck/forward but is also 180cm and has really established herself as a defender.

If the draft watchers based it on the National Championships or games at Essendon in the VFLW, then they were seeing her played out of position, and not seeing her at her best.

Lynch hasn't recorded a hit out in any of her 16 AFLW games and looks the better defender of the two but I agree she is another option. Looking at the stats, I see Gamble had 14 hit outs in 3 games in 2019. I'm guessing the 176cm Morris-Dalton is the option after these two.

Toogood (178cm) has been traditionally our third ruck over the past two seasons and of our currently listed players our stoppages over the past two seasons have looked like...

2020-2021 AFLW Ruck Contests (Hitouts / To Advantage)

381 - Moody (170 / 34)
37 - Toogood (4 / 1)
4 - Gamble (1 / 0)
3 - Morris-Dalton (0 / 0)
3 - Newton (0 / 0)
1 - Lamb (0 / 0)

The VFLW likely gives us the answer as to who will be the backup ruck/rucks in 2022...

2021 VFLW Ruck Contests (Hitouts / To Advantage)
83 - Gamble (24 / 6)
56 - Moody (34 / 6)
32 - Pritchard (16 / 5)
10 - Morris-Dalton (3 / 1)
1 - Hunt (1 / 1)
1 - Gutknecht (0 / 0)
1 - Hartwig (0 / 0)

Gamble (180cm) played just 4 VFLW matches this year and averaged 21 ruck contests so it's safe to assume that she'll be the main backup and I reckon Pritchard (178cm) will also take a few stoppages.

Luke Beveridge: "I can get my boys to the top of the ladder with only three genuine rucks on the list"
Nathan Burke: "Hold my beer..."

Very happy with Amanda Link slipping to 22 I was sure she'd go in the first 10. Still a bit disappointed that we didn't get Nanscawen but overall I think we did very well and I've listed their 2021 season averages below...

Amanda Ling (NAB League/U19 Championships/VFLW)
15 disposals at 65%, 9 contested, 3 clearances, 6 tackles, 2 marks, 3 inside 50s, 126 ranking points

Aurora Smith (NAB League/U19 Championships/VFLW)
13 disposals at 56%, 7 contested, 2 clearances, 3 tackles, 2 marks, 2 inside 50s, 94 ranking points

Elizabeth Snell (NAB League/U19 Championships/VFLW)
14 disposals at 48%, 8 contested, 2 clearances, 6 tackles, 3 marks, 3 inside 50s, 2 rebounds, 1 goal, 112 ranking points

It will be interesting. Pritchard may end up the preferred back up due to offering more around the ball. She would essentially be an extra midfielder.

Seems like a pretty good result from the draft.
2 highly rated players who slid with Ling hopefully able to add some of the inside grunt we've been missing and hopefully pretty ready to hit the ground running.
All seem to be strong defensively and are quick which should suit our rebound gamestyle well.

Any idea why Campbell chose Melbourne when she was a Bulldogs supporter?

Maybe I'm being overly suspicious but I have a hard time getting invested in the girls competition when clubs can pay players outside of their playing contacts.

It seems like this draft has opened up a bit of a can of worms with what Gold coast did. What's to stop GWS or Adelaide 'convincing' the top 5 prospects to nominate in their state instead of their home state and picking them up with a bunch of fourth round picks?

I understand the need for state based drafts but there do seem to be significant flaws.

Yeah it's definitely a good draft on paper.
I think a specialist winger will help the midfield out as much as anything. I don't think we have really had one since Conti left.

As Weltschmerz pointed out, Campbell sited Melbourne being easier to get to from the Eastern suburbs as the reason for her decision.
Whether there is more to it than that we will probably never know.

These AFLW foundation years were always going to be a bit of a dogs breakfast.
At least when Hawthorn and Essendon join that will be the end of the expansion raids and it will then be up to clubs to keep their lists together.
I think our core of young players seem to have forged a strong bond and connection to the club so I think we will do OK this time around.
State based drafts will be a thing until the competition is fully professional which is going to be a fair way off.
It is up to the AFL to ensure that the competition is run in a fair and honest way, and it is up to the clubs to keep the AFL honest.
I'm sure that the clubs are all keeping tabs of what the other clubs are up to and will raise a flag if they see anything too suspicious.

I believe we have an assistant coaching position going which a ex Geelong player, daughter of a Geelong great is interested in applying for. She would be a great fit.

As I hinted, Mel joins the coaching squad as a defence coach. She wasn’t going to take it originally as it was difficult in balancing her employment and coaching commitments. She said Ameet and Chris Grant couldn’t have been more accommodating. She is very impressed with the club.

AFLW Bulldogs confirm 2022 coaching panel

The AFLW Bulldogs have confirmed their coaching panel for season 2022, welcoming three additions in Josh Bruce , Dylan Roberton and James Kennedy.

Roberton (forwards coach) will join the recently appointed Mel Hickey (defence) and returning Natalie Wood (midfield) as an assistant coach, while Kennedy will take the reins as ruck coach.

Bruce will act as a development coach alongside Kirby Bentley.

Kennedy joins the Club from the NAB League’s Eastern Ranges, where he spent time with both the men’s and women’s programs as ruck coach.

His football and basketball background saw him mentor three eventual AFLW draftees in Keeley Sherar (Carlton), El Chaston (Collingwood) and Georgia Campbell (Melbourne).

Roberton arrives at the Kennel after a 129-game playing career with both Fremantle and St Kilda.

He announced his retirement from the game earlier this year, following a two-month hiatus where he weighed up his post-football options.

Bruce is no stranger to VU Whitten Oval, having crossed over from St Kilda during the 2019 AFL Trade Period.

The 27-year-old has played 37 games in the red, white and blue since, slotting 48 goals from 20 games to finish this season as the Club’s leading goalkicker.

An ACL injury in round 21 against Essendon – which also happened to be his 150thcareer match - saw him sidelined for the finals series, and while completing his rehab he will now dedicate part of his time to coaching.

Bulldogs’ General Manager of Women’s Football, Debbie Lee, said the three appointments will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience.

“To have people of this calibre join our AFLW program for season 2022 is great, not only for our players but for our entire program,” Lee said.

“We’re thrilled to have Dylan join Mel and Nat as assistant coaches, James come on board as our ruck coach, and Josh join Kirby as a development coach.

“It’s been extremely pleasing to welcome our new additions to the Kennel, having officially started pre-season last week.

“Led by ‘Burkey’, we’re extremely confident in our coaching panel and believe the program will benefit greatly moving forward.”

The AFLW Bulldogs are currently training three times a week as they prepare for the 2022 NAB AFLW season to commence in January.
