They needed all 4 of Collingwood, Melbourne, Carlton and Richmond in one conference to get 'big games' I reckon.

Which is a little better than they did the previous year, except that the ladder from last year was compromised. This draw is always going to be compromised though. They also want to make sure they can put the two WA and QLD teams together so they can have their 'showdowns'.

I think they will keep this system and use crossover games for derbies. As the season length increases, there will be more crossover games, and it will be less of an issue.
