Just thanks god the aflw7 is all over.

Wasnt the finest aflw this time around.

Hope its last ever time its played october and november.

Terrible mess.

Congrats to the Dees and Daisy.

But i just feel this edition of the aflw is enough to end it all.

The next ones in its right time of feb and march.

But best still lets play the aflw as a curtain rasier for the first half of the afl season before the aflm games.

Makes sense and they actually get to play in front of real crowds.

I felt that the GF yesterday was a flop.

But i do congratulate the Dees on their win.

Now its time to make it better and it can be better.

Umpires again horrible.

Don't worry about the fact there were only 4 straight kicks in a GF. Disposals are so low too.

They're going to have to come up with a new stat or two for the women's game, just to provide an indication of what individual players are actually doing. The scrapping numbers would be high. So many players get their hands to the ball, but can't hold it to provide any effective disposal. Yes, it's always in a contest, but is footy just about seagulls fighting over a chip?

Both teams had 174 disposals yesterday (118 kicks, 56 handballs).

Lowest for Melbourne since R7 2018 (in what was essentially a PF loss to the Bulldogs). Lowest for Brisbane since R6 2020.

Each club had several slightly lower counts in 2017 when matches were fractionally shorter, but this was just the second sub-175 game for either team since then. Particularly low for the Dees who have only gone sub-200 a few times from 2018 onward.

When they met in R1 2017, the disposal count was 173-172. And earlier this year at Metricon, R7 S6, it was 234 apiece.
Teen Wolf's post above is good to read on this. Much lower disposals than usual for both teams. Why, is an interesting question.

A few factors may have been the heat. Was very hot. Also felt like it was a very defensive game. Both teams just wanted to lock it in their forward half.

Not sure how West didn't win BOG but thats a matter of opinion I guess. Never like the idea of the losing team player getting it, not that the winner was undeserving she played great.

The aggressive expansion was a terrible idea. The gap between the top teams and those brought it in scary, scary enough they didn't even fixture them paying against each other. This will take years to fix so really should have brought in two divisions and had relegation and promotion or something like that.

Interesting to see what they come up with for next season.

Expansion is always a struggle. 10 years into their men's existence the Suns have never been more than mediocre. I spose their thinking was rip the band-aid off, get all teams off the ground while there's been such a big growth in women's footy numbers and it'll hopefully become self-sustaining, with the kind of up/down cycles we're seeing in the men's.

I can't see them ever playing in February/March again, it's generally too hot, the grounds are too hard and the need to extend the season to at least 17 rounds means it should be played around the same time as the Men's comp. Whether it finishes in November again is another thing.

I believe it’s a pretty straight forward answer.

It comes down to Brisbane’s inexplicable tactic of putting a hand on a loose ball in dispute, but never actually attempting to take possession of the ball.

It was pretty clear, watching on tv, that our players had no intention of taking possession, but rather waited to lay a tackle as soon as a Melbourne player picked the ball.

That's a good point now thinking about it. I have rewatched some of it and that seemed like a tactic for some reason. It made there tackle number high but not sure what else it did to help.

I assume to try and break down our handball game. Which is a bit silly, Brisbane are a gun team in their own right, didn't need to try and stop us, just do their thing and we'd have to respond to them.

The grand final score says everything.

Lions kick first two goals........and then 3 point for the rest of the game.

Dees win kicking 2 goals 7 points.

Interested to know what size the ground was.

Feel that AFLW need to play on ground no bigger than the SCG. Would take the need for that extra kick, run and carry to get the ball into the forward line. One kick from a centre bounce and they are 40m out from goal.

Until something changes I wont be bothered watching. The gap between new and established teams is too far its not funny.

Refuted numerous times on this board already (with facts, not feels). I have gathered all the stats over seven seasons: the bigger grounds used are slightly more conducive to scoring than the smaller grounds. It is undoubtedly far less of a factor than a) the tactics employed by coaches; and b) the weather conditions (in general, hotter means much higher scores, thus this GF was quite an anomaly).

The only teams that would benefit from playing on a smaller ground are a few of the cellar dwellers who are constantly exposed through poor work rate and structure.

Perfect example is West Coast, who have the biggest oval in the comp and it's like Christmas for fitter, more disciplined teams--even if they're less experienced than the fourth-season Eagles (see the 50-point thumping Essendon handed them in just their third game).

Fact is women cant run as far nor as fast as men.

They cant kick further either. They are not as strong.

Thats not a 'feel' it a fact.

Reduce the numbers of players on the field, selected per game and list sizes. And dont play on massive grounds, nothing bigger that the SCG. Then maybe the weaker new teams can grab a higher % of the better players and the comp evens up. And as you point out large grounds suit established sides who have had first crack at the best players.

The AFL has committed so much to this comp and it currently is a bit of a joke. So many stakeholders making it out to being an elite competition and at the momemnt its a facade simply there to increase female interest and tv rights deals.

They should get Zooper Dooper to sponsor them too, 9 point 'Zooper Goal' for a goal from 40m out, have a Gatorade game-changer who gets double points. Scores would be off the charts! The extra sponsor dollars would be huge! Fans would line up around the block for that!

I'm glad Zooper Dooper is still around, I used to get that in primary school.

The average AFLW player most certainly runs much faster/further than the average dribbler in the local men's league who slugs around (unfettered by your bitching) on a 130m x 165m oval every weekend.

By any meaningful measurement, AFLW midfielders (even the relatively weak ones) are unquestionably elite athletes who cover the ground extraordinarily well.

Reduce the numbers of players on the field
What other cutting edge suggestions have you got for us... smaller ball, shorter game time, last touch out of bounds?

All these alterations have been made to serve a certain purpose. If there was a chance that shortening the field could actually improve the game (as opposed to making it worse, by massively increasing congestion and therefore serious collision injuries), the league would've already done it. Ain't gonna happen, get over it.

Nonsensical correlation attempt.

Weaker teams have shown they can grab a higher % of the better players, but it takes strong commitment from the club. See the recent improvement of Geelong, who have made excellent use of the rules and their resources to attract and retain high-quality talent from all over the country.

I quite clearly cited the example of Essendon, in their third game, who benefitted from playing on a big oval. Because you don't need seven seasons in the comp to be a fit and disciplined team.

Clearly a bit of logic and truth hurts you so much you now resort to insults and being a rude flog.

You obviously feel the game is perfectly fine and nothing needs changing? Which is plainly incorrect.

The low scoring, lop sided competition is all good? Nothing to worry about or address?

Well you are wrong. AFLW is currently boring and nowhere near as good as it could be. Low scoring is a massive issue. More goals scored in soccer games....lol...what does that tell you champ!

Stop being so defensive and maybe look and think about how this competition can grow into being better and actually as good as some presume it already is.

PS The averade dribbler team would still roll these AFLW teams btw. And kick a big score doing it. Most u18 teams would as well.

Lol. Still need to actually kick goals.

Thats the point.

I'm entitled to ridicule bad ideas.

Meanwhile you've resorted to insisting people stop defending AFLW on an AFLW board. Compelling stuff.

You obviously feel the game is perfectly fine and nothing needs changing?
I've gone into great detail on here before about improvements that could (and eventually will--things like a proper national draft are just going to require patience) be made, but smaller grounds certainly aren't included in that.

Whether the ground was big or small. It would hinge purely on strength and size in the contest, and nothing to do with the running capacity or skill level of either team in question.

It seems your great frustration with AFLW boils down to the fact that it's played by women.

What's your playing experience? You sound like you've never played the game
Nothing more than an "averade (sic) dribbler".

You sound like you've got no real argument to present, so instead you interject with a shit question.

Why are you afraid to answer properly?
Your question is stupid.

This isn't the thread for you to throw all your Brownlow medals in our faces. **** off.

Oh sorry, this is clearly the thread to make some bullshit statement about a sport you've obviously never played, then get all coy and abusive when someone calls you out on it :$

We could play it on a rugby sized field. Problem solved.
AFLW is a bit of a tarnished brand with nuffs, maybe use a different late-alphabet letter as a suffix. X maybe?
