Madison Prespakis, Carlton’s reigning best and fairest winner, will now be joined by her partner Serene Watson in the AFLW.

There’s just one problem. The couple won’t be on the same team. They won’t even be in the same state.

While Prespakis hopes to eventually live in the same state as Watson, the latter wants to take it one step further.

“In two years, we’ll try very hard to get her away from Carlton.”

Excuse my ignorance, but why didn’t the Suns get the early pick concessions in the draft similar to the men’s team when they joined?
The AFLW Draft is not like the men’s draft.

Potential draftees nominate where they want to be drafted to, due to the part time nature of the league, and small pay.

So for QLD, draftees could nominate All of Queensland, Gold Coast or Brisbane.

So in practice, unless a draftee nominates All of Queensland, each QLD club is drafting from a closed pool.

So the Lions and Suns compete for very few players.

I’m not sure if any/many draftees nominated for multiple States or Draft Zones.

Since we have a brand new team forming at the moment I figured it would be helpful to find out a little bit about the girls who will be representing us in the early parts of next year. I'll start with the draftees.

Pick 18 - Serene Watson (Bond University/Helensvale State High School)
  • Suns academy product.
  • Originally from New South Wales
Pick 22 - Hannah Dunn (Queanbeyan)

  • 2019 Premiership player with Queanbeyan.
Pick 42 - Brittany Perry (North Adelaide)
  • Former GWS listed player.
  • Former WBBL player with the Adelaide Strikers.
Pick 57 - Cheyanne Hammond (South Adelaide)

Pick 69 - Dion 'Dee' Heslop (Yeronga/Helensvale State High School)
  • Suns academy product.
  • Born in New Zealand and moved to the GC at 11.
  • A member of the 2019 NAB AFLW Academy squad.
Pick 86 - Jade Pregelj (Shailer Park State High School/Yeronga)
  • Former member of the Army.
Pick 91 - Georgia Breward (Coolangatta-Tweed/Pacific Valley Christian School)

Okay then we have the inaugural expansion signings.

Charlotte Hammans (Bond University/Varsity College)

  • She is a foundation member of the Gold Coast Football Club.
  • One of three first female signings for the Gold Coast Football Club.
Ellie Hampson (Hermit Park/William Ross State High School)

  • One of three first female signings for the Gold Coast Football Club.
Kitara Whap-Farrar (South Cairns/St Mary's Catholic College)

  • She has a Torres Strait Islander background.

Are there any others that are unknown or have the rest of our players all played in the AFLW in the past?

Looking at the conferences i think we have been screwed over.

Look at conference b

They have bottom of Conference A and B
Second Last of Conference A
as well as the two weaker semi finalists.

Exciting times to have a highly experienced and successful football person like Darryl White in our coaching group. It further strengthens our association with the NT and I personally think it's great to have indigenous representation within our coaching group. It's probably also worth noting that his son, William McDowell-White, is a professional basketball player currently competing in the G-League competition (essentially a reserves competition for the NBA) in the United States. The reason I'm mentioning Will is because he grew up playing footy for Coorparoo and was a Brisbane Lions academy member as a youngster before he decided to focus more on basketball and quit football.

Perhaps Darryl could convince him to sign a Category B rookie deal with us? I think the rules state you are eligible for that kind of scholarship if you have not competed in any Australian rules football league in the last two years and obviously that's the case with William. He's 21 years old and stands 196cms tall for anyone who is interested. I imagine his vertical leap would be impressive, too. It's the kind of acquisition that would infuriate Brisbane so that's an added benefit for some of the hardcores like Mr Bods :tearsofjoy: Look at the way the Cornes situation ignited the Crows-Power rivalry as an example.

Also nice to see Andrew Swallow in the coaching group. I feel like we're slowly introducing more highly experienced AFL people into our club and that's a good thing for both the club and Gold Coast football in general. The great thing about our city is these people often end up staying on the Gold Coast well after their tenure with us is over. Look at guys like Matthew Primus and Matthew Lappin who continue to coach at the Southport Sharks. Matty Lappin has even become a school coach at one of the private schools here on the GC so it looks he'll be here long term and that's exactly what we want when we bring these highly experienced AFL people to the Suns. I believe Primus has a few daughters who could be future AFLW players for us so that's something to keep an eye on from that perspective.
