And here's the announcement for those four joining the AFLW list, an hour after the Toogood article...

Great signings for the club. Thought Courtney Ugle had shown enough as well, hopefully she gets a chance at some stage to get picked up. Didn't realise she is Bobby Hills cousin.

So in the spirit of all things incompetent at AFL House, they've announced start dates for the expansion signing period and the sign & trade period, but not end dates :rolleyesv1:

So the expansion signing period starts next Tuesday, 24th of May, and potentially goes for about a week, finishing Friday 27th or Monday 30th of June (if it's longer than a week it might overlap with the Sign & Trade Period). So that's the period of time when the four expansion clubs can officially sign all of the players that have committed to them so far (as long as they're not taking too many from other clubs and haven't hit their cap on expansion signings from different sources).

Then the Sign & Trade Period starts on the 31st of May (which is Tuesday-week), which again potentially goes for about a week, so potentially finishing on Friday 3rd of June or Monday 6th of June. That's when all 18 clubs can sign free agents (which is something about offering a higher tier salary to an OOC player than the existing club is willing to match, it's a bit messy), and it's also when we can do any trades that we might want to do, like a normal trade period. Free agency doesn't have separate dates for the AFLW.

We don't yet know what draft picks we will have, but they will have to figure that out before the trade period presumably!

There are four expansion sides so the first eight picks will be split between the four clubs, then the draft order starts as normal with an extra eight picks at the end of each round, again split among the expansion sides. They haven't decided which of the expansion sides will go first, but presumably if you get pick 1 you'll have pick 8 as well, 2 and 7, etc. Given that there are still state-based drafts running simultaneously with the main event (some players nominate only for a particular state), this means that we'll have two of the first four picks in Victoria, split with Hawthorn.

The trade and sign stuff for existing players has to be done before pre-season starts on the 13th of June, so there's going to be a few players suddenly moving interstate that week after being in limbo for a long time! Hopefully they're able to prepare themselves for that.

Then we have the draft on the 29th of June, so 2.5 weeks after the start of pre-season training, but conveniently three days after the VFLW grand final so if we make it that far into finals our players should be able to focus on the game without having another club's guernsey in the cupboard at home! The AFLW only has one draft, so no pre-season draft and no rookie draft (unless something has changed), anyone who slips through is then available as a rookie signing or injury top-up signing to whatever club wins their signature.

I'll put the dates in the sticky.

Looks like we got another one! Good source CrowdedHouse

CLASSY winger Sophie Van De Heuvel has informed Geelong that she will leave the club via expansion this off season.

Van De Heuvel was taken with draft pick No.2 ahead of Geelong's inaugural season in 2019 and has played 31 games across four seasons.

Womens.afl understands that Van De Heuvel will reunite with former Geelong AFLW assistant coach and VFLW head coach Natalie Wood at Essendon.

Nothing from Essendon yet — if you spot something official to confirm it, make a player thread :)

All of the players who committed to sign with us have now been officially approved by the AFL:

(Not the case for everyone, Port and Hawthorn have a couple of players that have committed to them but aren't listed as approved today, and Sydney hasn't apparently lodged any paperwork at all yet).

Oh other than Van De Heuvel, who the club hasn't officially announced as coming yet (likely to give Walla's announcement some clear air as CH said).

ESSENDON looks set to land Western Bulldogs key back Ellyse Gamble.

Gamble, 24, is an inaugural Dog who has played 24 games for the club over six injury-affected seasons.

The 180cm Tasmanian will be joining teammate Bonnie Toogood at the Bombers, and looks set to line up alongside Danielle Marshall and Sophie Alexander in defence.

The expansion signing period closes at 2pm on Monday.

Not sure if it actually got done yet, AFLW doesn't announce the day's signings until later.
